Fifteen centres collaborated in a study to determine the value of amniotic fluid acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) electrophoresis in the diagnosis of fetal open neural-tube defects (NTDs) between 13 and 24 weeks of gestation among women with positive amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) results. Plasma exchange has become a widely used therapeutic tool in the treatment of immune-mediated disease. This technique has been applied to the treatment of gravid women whose high antibody titers and past history of stillbirths indicate a significant possibility of fetal loss due to HDN. Quantitative biochemical criteria for lung growth and maturation were compared with the histological appearances in hypoplastic lungs from 20 fetuses and newborn infants. This experiment was designed to study the degree of recovery from lead-induced neuro-behavioral deficit after normalization of blood lead-level (PbB). Female Wistar-rats were given a diet containing lead-acetate (2260 ppm Pb) for 60 d until mating, giving rise to a PbB-increase from 53 microgram/d1 (before mating) to 84 microgram/d1 (after weaning). Lead-exposure of their male offspring was continued for 4 months with their PbB levelling off at 40 microgram/d1 (table 1). Lead-feeding was discontinued thereafter for another 4 months, PbB declining to a final level of 12 microgram/d1 (table 1).

Prenatal diagnosis with globin chain synthesis analysis on fetal red blood cells concentrated by NH4Cl-NH4HCO3 differential lysis of maternal cells (Orskov lysis) was carried out in 27 pregnancies at risk for beta thalassaemia and one at risk for sickle cell beta0 thalassaemia. The beta/gamma globin chain synthesis ratio was also determined after anti-i-differential agglutination (12 cases), in almost pure fetal samples (sic cases) and by extrapolation (one case). Differential lysis permitted the study of samples drawn by placental aspiration containing as little as 3.2% fetal red blood cells.

The efficacy of (15S)-15-methyl-prostaglandin F2 alpha in terminating pregnancy in cases of known missed abortion, hydatidiform mole and intra-uterine fetal death was tested. There were 8 cases of missed abortion, 13 cases of intra-uterine death at or after 28 weeks' gestation, and 1 case of hydatidiform mole. A review of 251 cervical cerclage procedures in 205 women over a 7.5-year period was conducted to compare the success rate and morbidity of the Shirodkar and McDonald techniques. We describe our experience at University College Hospital, London, with the first 135 patients submitted to midtrimester fetal blood sampling for antenatal diagnosis of beta-thalassaemia major, other thalassaemias and homozygous sickle cell disease. Blind needling and fetoscopy with sampling are evaluated and their application discussed. With experienced operators 9 per cent of patients experienced a fetal loss.

Pony mares were bilaterally ovariectomized at different stages of pregnancy between Days 25 and 210. Abortion or fetal resorption occurred within 2 to 6 days after operations in all 14 mares ovariectomized between Days 25 and 45 and after an interval of 10 to 15 days in 9 of 20 other ovariectomized between 50 and 70 days. Clinical and haematological features in 41 patients with sickle cell-beta0 thalassaemia (Sbeta0 thalassemia) and in 123 age--sex matched controls with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease were compared. Antepartum pituitary infarction occurs only in insulin-dependent diabetic patients. It is manifested by severe headache, followed by decreasing insulin requirements. Delivery is frequently premature, with high fetal wastage and increased maternal mortality. A sensitive and precise assay of guanase was based on the conversion of 14C-guanine to uric acid in the presence of excess xanthine oxidase.
