Predictive Value of Venous Ductus Doppler in Perinatal Outcomes in Fetal Growth Restriction.

Introduction Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with perinatal morbidity, acidosis, and adverse neurological outcomes. While arterial Doppler of the umbilical artery (UA) and middle cerebral artery informs surveillance, ductus venosus (DV) Doppler may better reflect central hemodynamics and impending cardiac decompensation. This study evaluated the predictive value and clinical significance of DV Doppler velocimetry for acid-base status, early postnatal Apgar score (AS), neonatal morbidity, and neurological outcomes in infancy. Methods In a retrospective, single-center cohort, pregna

LDL-cholesterol in newborns and children with genetically verified familial hypercholesterolaemia: implications for cholesterol-based screening.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cholesterol screening in children, with subsequent genetic testing of top percentile, has been suggested as an efficient universal screening approach in familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). The potential cholesterol-based screening efficacy was investigated in a national genetically based screening programme. METHODS: Data were from the Norwegian national family cascade screening programme in FH children from 1998 to 2023. Cholesterol levels [umbilical cord in newborns (n = 113) and venous blood in children 1-12 years old (n = 1346)] in variant positive and variant negati

Cord Blood Bilirubin, Albumin, and Hemoglobin as Predictors of Significant Hyperbilirubinemia in ABO-Incompatible Newborns: A Prospective Study in a Tertiary Neonatal Center in India.

Background and aim ABO incompatibility is a common cause of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Early identification of babies at risk of neonatal jaundice allows timely treatment and helps minimize the risk of kernicterus. Given the paucity of data on Indian neonates with ABO incompatibility, this study aimed to identify reliable cord blood predictors of early hyperbilirubinemia by evaluating umbilical cord bilirubin, albumin, and hemoglobin levels in ABO-incompatible newborns. Methods This study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in India and included 210 babies with blood groups A+ve, B+ve,

Pravastatin and L-Arginine Use in Early-Onset Severely Growth-Restricted Dichorionic Twins: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Fetal growth restriction (FGR), or intrauterine growth restriction, is more common in twin pregnancies. Pravastatin enhances nitric oxide synthesis and placental vasodilation, and L-arginine, a precursor to nitric oxide, reduces pulmonary artery resistance. There is evidence that combined pravastatin and L-arginine can improve blood flow to the placenta, prolong pregnancy, and prevent preeclampsia in complicated pregnancies, including monochorionic twin pregnancies. CASE REPORT A 35-year-old patient, gravida 1, with dichorionic twin gestation conceived via intrauterine insemination

Maternal and neonatal outcomes in full-term pregnancies of very advanced maternal age: a Japanese single-center retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Advanced maternal age (AMA), defined as pregnancy in people aged ≥ 35 years, is associated with an increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. Although the outcomes of AMA pregnancies have been reported, detailed information on the specific outcomes in pregnant individuals aged ≥ 45 years, particularly those reaching full term, remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the perinatal outcomes of full-term pregnant individuals aged ≥ 45 years. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving full-term pregnant individuals aged ≥ 35 years who attempted

Asymptomatic Vaginal Candidiasis Complicated by Chorioamnionitis and Pelvic Abscess at Full-Term Delivery: A Case Report.

Despite the high frequency of vaginal candidiasis during pregnancy, chorioamnionitis (CAM) is rarely caused by Candida species as the initiating organism, especially in full-term delivery. A 25-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our hospital at 34 weeks and two days of gestation and was diagnosed with vaginal candidiasis based on a vaginal culture examination. She delivered a newborn via cesarean section at 39 weeks and four days of gestation. The newborn had scattered erythematous small papules systemically. White patches were observed on the placental fetal surface and along the entire

Does fetal or maternal leap-2 level affect infant birth weight?

INTRODUCTION: The etiology of maternal and infant weight gain during pregnancy is multifactorial. Many different biomarkers have been studied to elucidate this complex issue. Recent studies have led to the idea that Leap-2, which is thought to have an active role in energy metabolism, may also have an influence on infant birth weight. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between Leap-2 levels and infant birth weight. METHODS: In this prospective study, we evaluated 102 patients with pregnancies of 34 weeks or more. Among those group, Leap-2 levels collected from maternal venous blo

Neonatal Outcomes of Umbilical Cord Milking, Early Cord Clamping and Delayed Cord Clamping in Term Infants: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

Introduction Optimal umbilical cord management at birth plays a crucial role in neonatal outcomes. While delayed cord clamping (DCC) has been associated with improved neonatal haematologic and hemodynamic status, early cord clamping (ECC) remains widely practised. Umbilical cord milking (UCM) has emerged as an alternative to DCC, potentially offering similar benefits while reducing the delay in neonatal resuscitation. This study aims to compare the effects of UCM, ECC, and DCC on neonatal outcomes in term infants born between 37 and 42 weeks of gestation. Methods A total of 225 pregnant women

Umbilical Artery Leucine-Rich α-2 Glycoprotein as a Predictor of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Preterm Infants.

INTRODUCTION: Leucine-rich α-2 glycoprotein (LRG) is an acute-phase reactant protein which reflects inflammation differently from C-reactive protein. We investigated the value of cord blood LRG levels for predicting bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 64 infants born at 22-31 weeks' gestation (22 and 42 in the BPD and non-BPD arms, respectively), and between-group comparisons of LRG and interleukin (IL)-6 levels in the cord blood, neonatal LRG, and immunoglobulin (Ig)M were undertaken. Accounting for gestational age, inverse pro

Safety and potential efficacy of DM199, a tissue kallikrein-1 analogue, for treating pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction: study protocol for a South African, hospital-based phase I/II open-label trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction are leading causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality. A therapy that enhances maternal vascular function and promotes vasodilation to increase placental perfusion could treat both conditions.Tissue kallikrein-1 is an endogenous enzyme that releases bradykinin to activate the bradykinin 2 receptor on endothelial cells. This induces potent vasodilation and pro-angiogenic, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.DM199 is a recombinant form of tissue kallikrein which can be administered intravenously or subcutaneously. Clinical trials

Association of maternal metabolic conditions with mitochondrial DNA copy number in cord blood.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked with metabolic disorders, given the central role of mitochondria in multiple crucial metabolic processes. However, little is known about how maternal metabolic conditions may affect mitochondrial function in newborns, although several other prenatal exposures have been associated with impaired mitochondrial function in either the placenta or cord blood. This study aimed to assess the association between maternal metabolic conditions and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN, as a biomarker for mitochondrial function) in newborns. METHODS
