A brief report on the clinical studies of schistosomiasis japonica at Langko village in the Lindu lake area was given. The studies consisted of stool surveys, COPT, evaluation of the signs and symptoms of schistosomiasis, determination of the liver and spleen enlargement as well as the disease index and the clinical gradient. It seemed that the stool examinations as well as the COPT were considered sufficient, accurate and practical for mass surveys. Ceftazidime (CAZ) was evaluated for its safety and efficacy in 31 children. Of the 25 confirmed bacterial infections, 23 were cured by the CAZ therapy (efficacy rate, 92%). The results of more than eight years of screening for cystic fibrosis (CF), utilizing the albumin concentration in meconium, are reported. Over 28 000 meconium samples were tested, over 24 000 of them by the Boehringer-Mannheim strip test, and all samples considered as showing a trace or positive result were followed up by an immunological technique. Thirty-nine cases of leiomyosarcoma of the large intestine, excluding the rectum, have been collected and one original case has been added. The age of subjects ranges from one day to 78 years; sex distribution is almost equal. Only two cases of this disease have been reported in Negroes in the literature. The presence of macro or microscopic blood in the stools of 300 premature babies was studied prospectively in relation with the future risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). The microscopic blood was investigated using the bililabstix reactive stripe. Four group were made up: group A babies, with no blood in their stools. Group B babies with microscopic blood in feces. Group C babies with macroscopic or gross blood and group D babies with initially microscopic and later gross blood in their feces. A newborn infant was transferred to our hospital because of gastro-intestinal hemorrhage, starting a few hours after birth. Because of fetal distress a cesarean section had been necessary. The Boehringer-Mannheim Corporation (BMC) strip test is extremely reliable in indicating an albumin content above 20 mg/gm of dried meconium. All infants born during one year in 14 Milwaukee area hospitals were tested. Of 16,224 newborns, two were diagnosed correctly as suffering from cystic fibrosis and two were missed. False-positive tests were obtained in 0.9% of infants (prematurity, melena, gastroschisis, and intrauterine infection). The strip test is, at present, the best available but not the perfect screening method for cystic fibrosis.

The clinical course and biochemical findings in a case of carbamyl-phosphate-synthetase deficiency are described. The patient, a boy, presented 48 h after birth with rapidly developing hypotonia and hypothermia. Pulmonary haemorrhage, melaena and haematemesis ensued and despite ventilatory assistance and peritoneal dialysis the patient died on the fifth day. A virtual absence of carbamyl phosphate synthetase I (N-acetylglutamate dependent) was proved by analysis of tissue samples removed post mortem. Other urea cycle enzymes were normal.

In order to determine the sensitivity of the Cr51 method in intestinal blood losses, 11 normal term newborn babies were studied with no intercurrences in the perinatal period. A blood sample was labeled for each patient with Cr51 and during 3 day periods; daily blood samples were drawn and stools collected. It was observed a high degree of erythrocytes labelling and minimal blood losses were detected showing high sensitivity of the method.

Two low-birth-weight infants developed a syndrome of vomitting, distension, septic appearance, and bloody diarrhea. A distinctive form of necrotizing enterocolitis was observed in seven newborn infants in a 4 1/2-year period. Characteristically these patients had gross blood in the stools, but other local and systemic signs were mild or absent. Infants with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis born in Belfast during the 13 years 1957-1969 have been reviewed. Their distribution shows a bias towards higher social classes, breast feeding, and primogeniture. Obstetric factors and parental ages seem to be of no importance.
