Impact of level of nutritional dose and diet specific components of colostrum in promoting 24 h gain, circulating lipid profile, and circulating levels of immunocrit, proteins, glucose, and free amino acids in neonatal gilt piglets.

Colostrum (COL) intake relates to growth trajectory of pigs, which may be driven by differences in nutrient level, bioactive factors, or both. This study's objective was to determine the effect of feeding COL versus milk replacer (MR) at high and low doses [20% or 10% of birth body weight (BBW)] on 24 h weight gain, body temperature, circulating levels of glucose, protein, immunocrit, free amino acids, lipids and small metabolites. At birth, gilt piglets (n = 57) were assigned to: pooled COL fed at 20% (COL20) or 10% of BBW (COL10); MR fed at 20% (MR20) or 10% of BBW (MR10); stay on sow (SOS)

Late gestation heat stress in Sahiwal cows and its effects on neonatal immunocompetence and early growth.

The present study aimed to determine the complex interrelationships between late gestation heat stress (HS), colostrum quality and associated physiological responses in Sahiwal cow progenies. Late gestation Sahiwal cows (N = 24) were exposed to natural heat stress (NHS) or provided cooling treatment in a climate-controlled chamber (CLT). Calves born were categorized into four groups: IUHS (intrauterine HS), IUCL (intrauterine cooled), HSCL (IUHS calves supplied colostrum from CLT cows), and CLHS (IUCL calves supplied colostrum from NHS cows). The environmental variables were recorded and tempe

Application of next-generation sequencing to investigate a Serratia marcescens outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit.

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial infections in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) are a major concern due to the vulnerability of premature and immunocompromised infants. Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic pathogen often involved in these infections, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. Integrating Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) into infection control programs can enhance detection, surveillance, and prevention efforts. This study aimed to develop a mapping-based pipeline for strain typing and phylogenetic analysis of nosocomial infections, enabling detailed comparison of mi

Investigating Roles of Cerebral Blood Flow to Maintain Thermal Stability of Neonatal Brain Against Cold Stress Using Non-Invasive Probes for Brain Perfusion and Temperature Gradient.

BACKGROUND: Brain temperature is an important determinant of neurological outcomes in ill infants, yet contributions of environmental temperature and cerebral blood flow remain uncovered because of the lack of non-invasive probes. METHODS: Using non-invasive cot-side probes, we examined how cerebral blood flow influences brain temperature during mild cold stress induced by incubator-to-cot transfer. We studied 43 clinically stable infants in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit. After cot transfer, infants were routinely fitted with knit caps and wrapped in cotton blankets. Scalp and super

Evaluation of high flow oxygen therapy in healthy neonatal bull calves.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxemia often requires oxygen therapy. Unlike traditional delivery via nasal cannulas, high flow oxygen therapy (HFOT) provides a warm and humidified mixture of medical air and oxygen, and positive inspiratory and end-expiratory pressures in dogs and humans. It has not been evaluated in cattle. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: High flow oxygen therapy will be well tolerated in neonatal bull calves, result in increased oxygenation at all flow rates tested, and produce increased nasopharyngeal pressure at higher flow rates. ANIMALS: Ten healthy neonatal bull calves ≤ 10 days of age. METHO

Impact of restricted antibiotic use, hand hygiene, and sink trap replacement on carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales acquisition in parturients and newborns, Southeast Gabon (2022-2023).

Background In 2022, a study in the maternity and neonatology units of Franceville Hospital revealed high risk of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) acquisition in parturients and newborns potentially linked to suboptimal hand hygiene (HH) compliance, environmental contamination, and extensive use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in newborns. To address this, a three-pronged intervention-HH promotion via hand rubbing, sink trap replacement, and restricted antibiotic use-was implemented. Methods We conducted a prospective post-intervention study. HH compliance was assessed in February 20

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) as a Prophylaxis of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)-Protocol for a Safety Study.

Background/Objectives: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory disease with an incidence of about one in 1000 live births, much higher in premature and low birth weight newborns. Intestinal dysbiosis is an important element in the pathogenesis of NEC, and for this reason, experimental models have been used to administer fecal microbiota transplants (FMTs) for prophylaxis and treatment of NEC with very satisfactory results. The primary endpoint of the study is safety, defined as the incidence of adverse events (AEs) and serious adverse events (SAEs) occurring from the time of interve

Maternal insulin resistance during late gestation impairs brown adipose tissue development and thermogenic function in calves.

This study investigated the effect of maternal insulin resistance (IR) during late gestation on brown adipose tissue (BAT) development and thermogenic function in neonatal calves. Forty-four dry Holstein cows were selected for the study. Blood samples were collected during the dry period to assess insulin and glucose concentrations, and maternal IR was evaluated using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). The cows were divided into 2 groups: maternal low IR (n = 22) and maternal high IR (n = 22). Immediately after birth, calves were separated from their dams and closely monitored for gro

Camel plasma as an innovative non-antibiotic therapy for Escherichia coli-induced colibacillosis in neonatal lambs: a comparative pilot study with antibiotics, camel milk, and probiotics under a One Health framework.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Neonatal colibacillosis caused by Escherichia coli is associated with high mortality in lambs, resulting in significant economic losses and contributing to concerns about antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Conventional treatment relies heavily on antibiotics, but non-antibiotic alternatives are urgently needed to reduce AMR and support passive immunity transfer. This pilot study evaluated camel plasma as a novel non-antibiotic therapeutic option for E. coli infection in neonatal lambs, comparing its efficacy with antibiotics, camel milk, and commercial probiotics, while aligni

Feeding 2-fold upconcentrated versus native colostrum modulates systemic immunity, metabolism, and fecal profile in neonatal calves.

This study investigated the effects of feeding a 2-fold upconcentrated, vacuum-dried colostrum replacer (HC) compared with pooled native colostrum (NC) on passive immunity transfer, early metabolic adaptation, and fecal composition during the first week of life. Twelve Holstein calves were enrolled at birth and assigned to HC (n = 6) or NC (n = 6). Calves received either 2.5 L HC or NC at 4 and 12 h postpartum (p.p.), respectively, followed by transition milk until d 3 p.p. and bulk tank milk from d 4 p.p. onward. The HC replacer was formulated from the same pooled colostrum batch as the NC an
