Two methods of management of the perineal wound after rectal excision for neoplastic disease were compared in a prospective randomized clinical trial in 65 patients. Twenty-eight patients (Group A) were treated by partial closure of the perineal wound and cigarette drainage of the pelvic space, according to the method proposed by Gabriel. Thirty-seven patients (Group B) were treated by complete suture of the perineal wound and suction drainage of the pelvic space according to the method proposed by Altemeier. Between January, 1969, and May, 1974, 11 of 1208 low-birth-weight infants had early onset group-B streptococcal septicaemia. A case of hyperchloremic acidosis in an infant with imperforate anus and rectourethral fistula, showing lethargy, tachypnea, vomiting, and dehydration, is reported. Noma neonatorum, a gangrenous process affecting the nose, lips, mouth, anal region, and occasionally the scrotum and eyelids, affects neonates, especially low-birth-weight and premature ill babies, and is usually fatal 1-3 days after onset. Five newborn infants (birth weight 2900--3600 g) were given diazepam (Valium, LaRoche) for convulsive disorders in 4 equal doses intravenously, intramuscularly, rectally and orally with at least 24 hours intervals. Anorectal carriage as a possible primary source of vaginal colonization by group B Streptococcus was investigated. The study was performed during two separate periods and included 789 pregnant women and 422 neonates. Specimens from multiple sites were obtained for culture from all women and infants and were streaked onto blood agar plates containing 8 mug of gentamicin sulfate/ml and 15 mug of nalidixic acid/ml, which allow selective growth of streptococci. Twenty Holstein-Friesian male calves were obtained within 4 hours after bith (colostrum deprived) and allotted to 1 of 4 groups, each given a different feeding: colostrum, milk replacer, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and saline solution (0.85% NaCl). Comparable histologic alterations of intramural nervous tissue were reported in various diseases of the small and large intestine. In 6 cases, an intestinal obstruction was present which led to secondary intramural inflammation. A report is made on the continuous registration of oxygen consumption, heart rate, respiratory rate and rectal temperature in 32 neonates during the first two hours of life. 234 punch biopsy specimens of rectal tissue were taken from 112 children. In 94% of the patients the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease was confirmed or refuted by the first biopsy. The effectiveness of aminophylline in the treatment of apnea of prematurity was evaluated in 13 premature infants (mean birthweight, 1.13 kg; mean gestational age, 29 weeks). Apnea was recorded by direct observation in combination with impedance monitoring. Rectal suppositories of aminophylline (5 mg) were given at six-hour intervals. The average dose was 4.1 mg/kg. The medical records of all patients ages 0 to 21 years who underwent proctosigmoidoscopy and/or rectal biopsy over a 27 month period of time were reviewed to determine the efficacy and safety of these procedures in pediatric patients.
