Bradycardia in a newborn with accidental severe hypothermia: treat or don't touch? A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia significantly affects mortality and morbidity of newborns. Literature about severe accidental hypothermia in neonates is limited. We report a case of a neonate suffering from severe accidental hypothermia. An understanding of the physiology of neonatal thermoregulation and hypothermia is important to decide on treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A low-birth-weight newborn was found with severe accidental hypothermia (rectal temperature 25.7 °C) due to prolonged exposure to low ambient temperature. The newborn presented bradycardic, bradypnoeic, lethargic, pale and cold. Brad

Effects of drying and providing supplemental oxygen to piglets at birth on rectal temperature over the first 24 h after birth.

Neonatal piglets can experience both a decrease in body temperature and hypoxia, increasing risks for pre-weaning mortality. This research evaluated the effects of drying and providing supplemental oxygen to newborn piglets on rectal temperature (RT) over the first 24 h after birth. The study used a CRD with three Intervention Treatments (IT; applied at birth): Control (no intervention), Drying (dried using a desiccant), Oxygen [dried using a desiccant and placed in a chamber (at 40% oxygen concentration) for 20 min]. A total of 42 litters (485 piglets) were randomly allotted to treatments at

Unlikely SARS-CoV-2 Transmission During Vaginal Delivery.

Pregnant women display a higher risk of progression to disease and higher viral loads during infections due to their more permissive, tolerogenic immune system. However, only few studies have focused on SARS-CoV-2 intrapartum vertical transmission via vaginal secretions or faeces. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of the virus in vaginal, rectal and blood specimens from pregnant women characterized by different COVID-19 disease severity. We enrolled 56 SARS-CoV-2-positive pregnant women, of which 46 (82%) were in the third trimester of pregnancy, 6 (10%) in the second and 4

The Surgical Apgar Score Predicts Postoperative Complications in Elderly Patients After Surgery for Colorectal Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical Apgar score (SAS) has been validated as a risk assessment tool for postoperative complications. However, the utility of the SAS in elderly patients with colorectal cancer remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the utility of the SAS for predicting the severe complications in elderly patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 295 patients underwent radical surgery for colorectal cancer in elderly patients ≥75 years old. The SAS was calculated based on 3 intraoperative parameters: estimated blood loss (EBL), lowest mean arterial pressure,

Two Cases of SARS-CoV-2-Positive Mothers and Their Newborns in Korea.

It is unclear how severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) affects pregnant women and their fetuses or newborns. We report two infants born to mothers with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Korea. The first case was a healthy female baby born at 39+3 weeks' gestation from a mother diagnosed with COVID-19. The second case was a female baby born at 38+0 weeks' gestation. The newborn in the second case had symptoms of respiratory distress immediately after birth, and nasal continuous positive airway pressure support was applied for 8 hours. Localization of infection in neonatal rhesus macaques after oral viral challenge.

Vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can occur in utero, during delivery, and through breastfeeding. We utilized Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging coupled with fluorescent microscopy of 64Cu-labeled photoactivatable-GFP-HIV (PA-GFP-BaL) to determine how HIV virions distribute and localize in neonatal rhesus macaques two and four hours after oral viral challenge. Our results show that by four hours after oral viral exposure, HIV virions localize to and penetrate the rectal mucosa. We also used a dual viral challenge with a non-replicative viral vector and a repli

Do We Vary from Caucasians! Cephalometric Analysis for Orthognathic Surgery in Chhattisgarhi Population.

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that has become more prevalent worldwide because of lifestyle changes. It leads to serious complications, including increased atherosclerosis, protein glycosylation, endothelial dysfunction, and vascular denervation. These complications impair neovascularization and wound healing, resulting in delayed recovery from injuries and an elevated risk of infections. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of lipoic acid (LA) on the key mediators involved in the wound healing process, specifically CD4 + CD25 + T cell subsets, CD4 + CD25 + Fo

Later cooling within 6 h and temperatures outside 33-34 °C are not associated with dysfunctional autoregulation during hypothermia for neonatal encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cooling delays, temperature outside 33-34 °C, and blood pressure below the mean arterial blood pressure with optimal cerebral autoregulation (MAPOPT) might diminish neuroprotection from therapeutic hypothermia in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). We hypothesized that longer time to reach temperature <34 °C and having temperature outside 33-34 °C would be associated with worse autoregulation and greater brain injury. METHODS: Neonates with HIE had rectal temperature and near-infrared spectroscopy autoregulation monitoring during hypothermia (n = 63) and rewarming

Maternal arginine supplementation enhances thermogenesis in the newborn lamb.

Body temperature maintenance is one of the most important physiological processes initiated after birth. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is an essential mediator of thermogenesis in many species and is responsible for 50% of the heat generated in the newborn lamb. To determine if maternal arginine supplementation could enhance thermogenesis in the neonate, we randomly assigned 31 multiparous Suffolk ewes, gestating singletons or twins, to receive intravenous injections of either l-arginine (27 mg/kg body weight; n = 17) or sterile saline (n = 14) three times daily from day 75 to 125 of gestation (t

Effects of different types of zinc supplement on the growth, incidence of diarrhea, immune function, and rectal microbiota of newborn dairy calves.

Neonatal diarrhea in dairy calves causes huge economic and productivity losses in the dairy industry. Zinc is an effective anti-diarrheal agent, but high doses may pose a threat to the environment. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of low-dose zinc supplementation on the growth, incidence of diarrhea, immune function, and rectal microbiota of newborn Holstein dairy calves. Thirty newborn calves were allocated to either a control group (without extra zinc supplementation), or groups supplemented with either 104 mg of zinc oxide (ZnO, equivalent to 80 mg of zinc/d) or 457 mg of zinc me
