The methodology of cutaneous PCO2 measurement and the results of the first clinical studies performed with a newly developed sensor are reported. The in vitro data of the sensor are: sensitivity 55 mV/decade; response time tau 90% = 50 s; drift less than 10% per 24 h; no measurable interference by oxygen and anesthetic gases. At a sensor temperature of 44 degrees C, the correlation between arterial PCO2 and cutaneous PCO2 is significant, with correlation coefficients above 0.95 both in case of neonates and adult patients. Between 1955 and 1980 there were 14 patients treated at The Hospital for Sick Children with hemangiomas of the liver. Eight were seen at birth and 13 within the first 6 wk of life. The presenting clinical feature was that of massive hepatomegaly. Two children who had presented in the neonatal period were found to have had cardiac failure. Cow's milk protein allergy affects gastrointestinal morphology and function. The clinical symptoms depend on the localisation in the gut and on the type of the allergic reaction. In some patients cutaneous, respiratory and even urinary symptoms may also be present. As the condition is almost limited to the first year of life, transitory elimination of cow's milk from the diet is the treatment of choice. A number of patients with intractable diarrhoea suffers from undiagnosed cow's milk protein allergy.

The clinical data of 59 patients with hemophilia A or B are reviewed. Intracranial bleeding was observed in 6 patients and a minor bleeding episode was assumed in a further 8 patients. Diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis is a serious multisystem syndrome of multiple cutaneous hemangiomas, visceral hemangiomatosis with arteriovenous shunts, high output congestive heart failure, thrombocytopenia with hemorrhage and central nervous system involvement. Some neonates with multiple cutaneous hemangiomas, however, may follow a benign course of spontaneous resolution without symptomatic visceral involvement. Such cases may be called benign neonatal hemangiomatosis.

Human endothelial cells (EC) cultured from umbilical cord veins were reacted with sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and normal persons. The case reports of 492 infants with critical congenital cardiac disease treated with prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) were reviewed to determine the nature and incidence of intercurrent medical events. Seventy-four patients with acute pure monoblastic leukaemia treated between 1970 and 1978 were studied retrospectively. The disease was usually hyperleucocytic and tumoral in character.
