The authors analysed 1061 early amniocentesis carried out during 1000 pregnancies. The indications were as follows: chromosomal abnormalities (79,6 p. 100), fetal karyotypes for X-linked diseases (4,7 p. 100), metabolic disorders (5,9 p. 100), amniotic fluid alpha-foetoprotein (9,8 p. 100) in neural tube defect or congenital nephrosis. Amniotic fluid was obtained on the first attempt in 98.2 p. 100 and on the second attempt in 100 p. 100. The cellular immune system of the human newborn, like the rest of the immunologic apparatus, is anatomically intact, antigenically inexperienced, and functionally deficient. A patient with congenital ichthyosis and progressive neurologic anomalies showed disturbances in the specific humoral and cellular defense as well as the presence of atypical lymphoid cells in skin and lymph node. The latter resembled the atypical T cells found in mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome. The possibility of the presence of either a cutaneous T cell lymphoma or unregulated T cell stimulation leading to concurrent immunodeficiency in this patient is discussed.

Fourteen cases of benign tumorous conditions in children are reported. Each new growth described represents a true neoplasm, one simulating a true neoplasm, or one simulating a true tumor, clinically and/or radiographically. A premature baby presented with severe hydrops fetalis due to a multifocal angiomatous malformation of the liver. There were two other small vascular tumors: hemangioma of the skin and chorioangioma. Hydramnios and placental edema were also present. The association of severe hydrops fetalis and hydramnios with angiomatous malformation of the liver was not found in reviewing the literature.

Correction of essential fatty acid deficiency by transcutaneous absorption of topically applied EFA-rich oil has been reported. We measured serum EFA levels in two groups of neonates receiving fat-free total parenteral nutrition: nine control patients after 16 and 25 days of TPN, and six patients before and 12 days after beginning cutaneous application of 100 mg/kg/day of linoleic acid as sunflower seed oil. A hypothyroidism with moderate goiter was discovered in a newborn presenting with repeated apnoea indicating a severe risk of sudden death. The mother was given no iodine-rich drug. However, the child was submitted to several large applications of iodized alcohol to the skin for numerous blood samplings. Iodine deficiency in adults caused preferred synthesis of T3; this observation has not been reported in iodine-deficient hypothyroid newborns. Serum total T4, total T3, and TSH have been determined in nine full term newborns with congenital hypothyroid goiter before and after cutaneous application of iodine. The proportion of thymus-dependent (T) lymphocytes in the blood and the ability to mount cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity to a battery of antigens were evaluated in 50 low birth weight (LBW) infants when they were 3 months to 5 years old.
