The majority of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) reported in the literature is due to ABO and rhesus incompatibility. However, there are also other minor blood groups that have been identified as a cause of HDFN, although the occurrence is much rarer. The antibody screening program for D negative mother and the anti-D immunoglobulin treatment showed a significant reduction of the occurrence of HDFN secondary to anti-D. In a developed country, the screening for red blood cell antibody in the pregnant mother other than anti-D reduced the possibility of HDFN occurrence hence redu

Despite advancement in medical care, Rh alloimmunisation remains a major cause of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia, neuro-morbidity, and late-onset anaemia. Delayed cord clamping (DCC), a standard care now-a-days, is yet not performed in Rh-alloimmunised infants due to paucity of evidence. Hence, we randomised these infants of 28- to 41-week gestation to delayed cord clamping (N = 36) or early cord clamping (N = 34) groups. The primary outcome variable was venous packed cell volume (PCV) at 2 h of birth. The secondary outcomes were incidence of double volume exchange transfusion (DVET) and partial

Rhesus D (RhD) negative pregnant women carrying an RhD positive fetus are at risk of developing anti-D during or after pregnancy. Anti-d-immunoglobulin (RhIg), which is mainly produced from special plasma donated in a few countries for the whole world, is able to prevent an anti-D alloimmunization. Through the introduction of ante- and postnatal anti-d-prophylaxis into clinical routine, the frequency of hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn decreased considerably. Postnatal prophylaxis from the beginning in the 1960s has been applied only to women who delivered an RhD positive newborn. Becaus

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY: In neonates with Rh-hemolytic disease, light emitting diode (LED) phototherapy allows delivery of high spectral irradiance (SI). A linear correlation exists between SI and efficacy of phototherapy with no saturation point. There is scant data on evaluation and early phototherapy using LED units in Rh-hemolytic disease.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), total serum bilirubin (TSB), phototherapy parameters and short-term outcomes in neonates with Rh-hemolytic disease.
METHODOLOGY: Maternal parameters for Rh-isoimmunization w

BACKGROUND: Haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN) is the most common aetiology of haemolytic anaemia and hyperbilirubinaemia in foetuses and neonates. Studies on the distribution of antibodies that cause haemolytic disease of the foetus (HDF) in China are limited, and the effects of multiple antibodies on the severity of HDF need further evaluation.
METHODS: An observational cohort study from January 2005 to December 2019 was conducted in two hospitals affiliated with Sun Yat-sen University. Maternal red cell alloimmunization was identified by the Guangzhou Blood Centre. In tota

BACKGROUND: RhD blood group incompatibility during pregnancy can cause serious health problems for the fetus. Noninvasive fetal RhD blood group genotyping is a test for fetal RhD status that may help prevent unnecessary preventive treatment (Rh immunoglobulin [RhIG] injections) and intensive pregnancy monitoring. We conducted a health technology assessment of noninvasive fetal RhD blood group genotyping for RhD-negative (RhD-) pregnancies. Our assessment evaluated the test's diagnostic accuracy, clinical utility, and cost-effectiveness, the budget impact of publicly funding this test, and pati

UNLABELLED: Purpose: Villous capillary lesions are rare abnormal placental developmental conditions which include chorangiosis, chorangiomatosis, chorangioma and a rare variant of the latter called multiple chorangioma syndrome. The causes of villous capillary lesion are not completely clear but appear to involve excessive angiogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this paper we start illustrating our experience of multifocal chorangiomatosis with the newborn affected by massive umbilical vein thrombosis, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and hydrops, going to a literature review of cases

OBJECTIVES: Detection of maternal irregular antibodies against red blood cell antigen is vital in the management of hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn. There are no uniform guidelines related to antenatal antibody screening and identification in the developing Country like India. This study was aimed to identify such alloimmunization and its associations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on antenatal mothers at a tertiary care center. The mothers having a history of anti-D administration, blood transfusion, and autoimmune disorders were excluded from the study.

ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn (ABO-HDN), which may cause neonatal jaundice and polycythemia, or even stillbirth or neonatal death, is widespread in China. Prenatal testing for the fetal ABO blood group can reduce unnecessary concerns or ensure prompt treatment. Herein, we presented a method to employ high-density silica microbeads (SiO2 MBs) for capturing fetal nucleated red blood cells (fnRBCs) in maternal peripheral blood, and we detected the ABO genotype of the fetus using these captured cells. We evaluated 52 patients using the SiO2 MBs. Among 26 pregnant women with type O blood, 8

Red blood cell alloimmunisation after transfusion of red blood cell concentrates carries a risk for every recipient. This risk is particularly high for patients with conditions such as sickle cell disease. However, red blood cell alloimmunisation can also occur after platelet concentrate transfusion. All blood group systems other than ABO are affected, and there are several mechanisms responsible for this alloimmunisation. The practical implications of this are a need to match red blood cell concentrates in all alloimmunised patients and, in pregnant women, recongnition of the risk of developi

BACKGROUND: All non-sensitized Rhesus D (RhD)-negative pregnant women in Germany receive antenatal anti-D prophylaxis without knowledge of fetal RhD status. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma could avoid unnecessary anti-D administration. In this paper, we systematically reviewed the evidence on the benefit of NIPT for fetal RhD status in RhD-negative pregnant women.
METHODS: We systematically searched several bibliographic databases, trial registries, and other sources (up to October 2019) for controlled intervention studies investigating NIPT for

In the mid-20th century, Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn, caused by maternal alloimmunization to the Rh(D) blood group antigen expressed by fetal red blood cells (i.e., "Rh disease"), was a major cause of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. However, with the regulatory approval, in 1968, of IgG anti-Rh(D) immunoprophylaxis to prevent maternal sensitization, the prospect of eradicating Rh disease was at hand. Indeed, the combination of antenatal and post-partum immunoprophylaxis is ~99% effective at preventing maternal sensitization to Rh(D). To investigate global compliance

INTRODUCTION: Antenatal antibody screening in India is focused on the detection of anti-D in RhD-negative mothers. HDFN outcome can also be affected by the presence of antibodies other than anti-D. We planned this study to find the impact of 'anti-D in combination with additional antibodies' on the development and severity of HDFN compared with 'anti-D alone'.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study performed at a referral center in northern India from October 2015 to March 2018. Antibody screening was performed on women with complicated obstetric history. Women with anti-D antibody were inclu

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the frequency distribution of of ABO haemolytic disease of newborn (ABO-HDN) and to know the predictive value of immunohaematological tests in identifying at risk neonates.
BACKGROUND: ABO incompatibility, although a common cause of haemolytic disease of newborn, has several unaddressed issues related to it.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study over 20 months was carried out in a tertiary care centre in South India. Blood grouping, Direct Antiglobulin test (DAT) and elution studies were performed on neonatal samples, whereas blood grouping, antibody screeni

Transthoracic and transesophageal examinations should be considered as mutually complementary. Transesophageal echocardiography is performed in cases of a justified need to visualize structures that are poorly visible or invisible on transthoracic echocardiogram. Primary indications for transesophageal echocardiography include an assessment of cardiac source of embolism, suspected endocarditis, suspected prosthetic valve dysfunction, an assessment of thoracic aorta and other vessels, an assessment prior to valvular repairs and closures of septal defects, intraoperative monitoring of cardiac or

Blood transfusion is the most common procedure completed during a given hospitalization in the United States. Although often life-saving, transfusions are not risk-free. One sequela that occurs in a subset of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion recipients is the development of alloantibodies. It is estimated that only 30% of induced RBC alloantibodies are detected, given alloantibody induction and evanescence patterns, missed opportunities for alloantibody detection, and record fragmentation. Alloantibodies may be clinically significant in future transfusion scenarios, potentially resulting in ac

ABO blood group incompatibility between mother and fetus can lead to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). We present the first case of severe O/A HDFN associated with extremely high-titer (1:32 000) immunoglobulin G anti-A antibodies in a Cameroon mother. Cord blood analysis revealed severe fetal hemolytic anemia and conjugated hyperbilirubinemia. After exclusion of an underlying disease and other risk factors, cholestasis resolved after treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid, a red blood cell transfusion, and intravenous immunoglobulins. This case is presented to create awareness f
