Piloting an AI Introduction Program for Incoming Medical Students: A Novel Approach to Medical Education.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) could lead to intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), which has now been identified as a major cause of death after trauma if it is not adequately diagnosed and properly treated within the first 24 hours. CT examination is widely preferred for urgent ICH diagnosis, which enables the fast identification and detection of ICH regions. However, the use of it requires the clinical interpretation by experts to identify the subtypes of ICH. Besides, it is unable to provide the details needed to conduct quantitative assessment, such as the volume and thickness of hemorrhagic lesion

Clinical and health economic impact of isavuconazole for treatment of invasive aspergillosis and mucormycosis: a retrospective, matched multicentre cohort study in Germany.

PURPOSE: Isavuconazole is effective against invasive aspergillosis (IA) and mucormycosis (IM) and may improve clinical outcomes compared to alternative antifungal treatments. However, real-world evidence regarding its clinical use and the health economic burden of inpatient treatment for IA and IM of patients with haematological malignancies remains limited. METHODS: A retrospective, matched, multicentre cohort study was conducted in six German tertiary care centres. The study included adults with haematological or oncological diseases who were diagnosed with proven, probable, or possible IA

Stable mammalian expression of His-tagged prestin in Chinese hamster ovary cells.

INTRODUCTION: The demographic development in Germany, especially in Saxony-Anhalt (SA), also poses challenges for vascular surgery, as the incidence of vascular diseases has increased following demographic change. For example, the prevalence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) in industrialised countries is estimated at around 10-20% in people over 60 years of age; thus, the number of people affected will also increase here with demographic change. Especially in rural areas, it seems to be more difficult for patients to reach appropriate specialist treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Antifungal Stewardship: Time to Reappraise the Priorities toward Increasing Invasive Fungal Infections.

Excessive prescription of antifungal medications heightens the risk of adverse effects and drug interactions for patients while also fostering the development of resistant fungal strains. Moreover, antifungal agents rank among the most expensive antimicrobial drugs in hospital inventories, and the populations vulnerable to invasive fungal diseases are expanding. These factors collectively contribute to elevated mortality rates and extended hospital stays among affected populations. While the global community has placed a growing emphasis on the significance of antibiotic stewardship to combat

Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Experience in the Management of Culture-Positive Mucormycosis: Observation from a Large Healthcare System.

Background: Mucormycosis, an invasive fungal infection with high morbidity and mortality rates, requires prompt surgical and antifungal therapies; however, the role of antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) in clinical management of mucormycosis remains underexplored. We aimed to describe the experience of using AFST in the clinical management of mucormycosis. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study from 1 October 2017 to 8 February 2023. We included non-pregnant patients aged ≥ 18 years old with a positive culture for Mucorales and with proven or probable mucormycosis. We collected clin

Quantifying lifetime risk for 1,401 infectious diseases across the diabetes spectrum using a Bayesian approach.

BACKGROUND: While diabetes-related complications have been widely investigated, the burden of infectious diseases across the diabetes spectrum remains relatively understudied. METHODS: We developed a Bayesian approach to compare infection risk across 9,476 patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D), 74,270 with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and 32,095 with prediabetes. RESULTS: Patients with T1D, T2D, and prediabetes had multifold increased risk for all organ system- and pathogen-based composite infection outcomes. We also quantified risk for 1,401 individual infection outcomes, finding increased risk for

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing in diagnosing rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis presenting as cerebral Infarction: a case series and diagnostic analysis of seven patients.

INTRODUCTION: Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a rare, rapidly progressive, and fatal invasive fungal infection. This case series is the first to systematically characterize ROCM presenting primarily as cerebral infarction on imaging and highlights the value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the early diagnosis of such critical and atypical cases. MAIN SYMPTOMS AND IMPORTANT CLINICAL FINDINGS: All seven patients had diabetes mellitus, with six concurrently presenting with ketoacidosis. Universal clinical features included fever and a fixed, dilated pupil. Most p

Denture-Associated Candidiasis and Mucormycosis in Post-COVID-19 Older Adults Managed Through an Integrated Prosthodontic and Infectious Disease Approach: A Narrative Review.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant vulnerabilities among older adults, particularly denture wearers, to opportunistic fungal infections, including mucormycosis and oral candidiasis. This narrative review, following PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Narrative Reviews) guidelines, collected evidence from 2020 to 2025 to examine the connection between denture use, systemic comorbidities, and fungal complications in elderly individuals after COVID-19. A total of 21 of 104 studies were included, covering case-control, cross-secti

Correlation Between Endoscopic and Radiological Data in Rhino-Orbital-Cerebral Mucormycosis (ROCM).

Background The invasive fungal illness known as rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is associated with significant morbidity and fatality rates. The increasing burden of the disease and lack of uniformity in guidelines related to its management have led to an increasing case fatality rate. The main objective of the study was to compare and corroborate the cross-sectional imaging findings of CT and MRI scans with those of intra-operative endoscopic findings. Methods This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care centre of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Aurangabad, India. E

Mucormycotic osteomyelitis following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A case report and literature review.

We report a case of femoral osteomyelitis caused by Mucorales in a young, healthy male patient following ACL reconstruction. Fungal osteomyelitis of the extremities is a rare condition primarily caused by Aspergillus or Candida in immunocompromised patients. Diagnosis is often delayed until standard antibiotic regimens fail. Current guidelines recommend systemic amphotericin B with surgical debridement; however, the drug's clinical use is restricted by severe nephrotoxicity. To mitigate systemic toxicity, amphotericin B-loaded Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) spacers have been investigated, thou

[Patient-specific subperiosteal implant for the treatment of upper denture retention problems].

A 66-year-old man presented with a loose complete denture in the edentulous maxilla, 1 year after receiving treatment for mucormycosis. This fungal infection had caused progressive necrosis of the maxilla, eventually resulting in a partial maxillary resection. Due to the defect in the jawbone, the denture was unstable and the retention poor. To improve denture retention, a patient-specific subperiosteal implant was fabricated. Computed tomography was used to create a 3-dimensional design and the implant was manufactured from titanium using selective laser melting. The implant was fixed to the
