INTRODUCTION: the ABO and Rhesus systems remain the most clinically significant blood group antigens on red blood cell membranes. Rhesus isoimmunization occurs when maternal Rh antibodies in a RhD-negative woman react with red blood cells of an RhD-positive fetus, leading to adverse fetal and neonatal outcomes.
METHODS: a cross-sectional review of 194 medical records of RhD-negative pregnant women managed at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) between 2013 and 2019 was conducted. Data on sociodemographic, obstetric, and clinical characteristics were extracted and analyzed using SPSS version 23.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

BACKGROUND: Prehospital low-titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) used for patients with life-threatening hemorrhage is often RhD positive. The most important complication following RhD alloimmunization is hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Preceding clinical use of RhD positive LTOWB, we estimated the risk of HDFN due to LTOWB prehospital transfusion in the Finnish population.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We collected data on prehospital transfusions in Tampere and Helsinki University Hospital areas. Using the mean of reported alloimmunization rates in trauma studies (24%) and a hig

Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is an immune-mediated condition caused by the production of maternal antibodies to fetal red blood cells. This condition most commonly arises due to Rh factor incompatibility. The case presented here displays an example of HDFN in which the mother and fetus's blood type was O+. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the mother is a producer of anti-Gonzales antibodies (anti-Go(a)). With no cases published in the 21st century, this antibody is a rare cause of HDFN. Anti-Go(a) is produced against the Go antigen, a low-frequency Rh ant

Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn is due to maternal IgG antibodies that transport through the placenta and destroy neonatal red cells. A mismatch of antigens between mother and fetus causes isoimmunization resulting in mild anemia, which may progress to fetal hydrops in the intrauterine period and severe hyperbilirubinemia to kernicterus in neonates. The isoimmunization is mainly caused by Rh-D and ABO antibodies. In this case report, we found neonatal hyperbilirubinemia due to the presence of anti-c alloantibody previously developed in a sickle cell disease (SCD) pregnant female. It

Erythroblastosis fetalis is one of the leading causes of death among newborns and fetuses in India. This condition is characterized by maternal immunoglobin G antibodies destroying the red blood cells (RBCs) of the neonate or fetus, resulting in potentially life-threatening consequences. When a mother with an Rh-positive blood group has a fetus with an Rh-negative blood group, the fetal RBCs trigger maternal antibodies against Rh-antigens. Anti-D antibodies are activated as a result of this process, which is known as isoimmunization. As a result of the antibody reaction, all of the erythrocyte

Next to A and B antigens, agglutinogen D exhibits the highest immunogenicity. Following the transfusion of D-positive red blood cells (RBCs), almost 80% of D-negative recipients develop anti-D antibodies (Abs). Subsequently, anti-D immunization further promotes the synthesis of Abs towards other blood group antigens in or outside the Rh system. The D antigen is also involved in 95% of cases of hemolytic disease of the newborn. Transfusions, hemotherapy, grafts, and obstetric history (abortions, ectopic pregnancy, births) are all risk factors for Rh isoimmunization. In the case of ABO compatibi

BACKGROUND: Transplacental or fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) may occur during pregnancy or at delivery and lead to immunization to the D antigen if the mother is Rh-negative and the baby is Rh-positive. This can result in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) in subsequent D-positive pregnancies. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate distribution of ABO and Rh (D) blood groups among pregnant women in Ethiopia.
METHOD: We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, HINARI, AFRO Library Databases, and African Online Journal data

Red blood cell alloimmunisation after transfusion of red blood cell concentrates carries a risk for every recipient. This risk is particularly high for patients with conditions such as sickle cell disease. However, red blood cell alloimmunisation can also occur after platelet concentrate transfusion. All blood group systems other than ABO are affected, and there are several mechanisms responsible for this alloimmunisation. The practical implications of this are a need to match red blood cell concentrates in all alloimmunised patients and, in pregnant women, recongnition of the risk of developi

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of red cell antibodies in pregnancy varies with ethnicity and geographical location, while the obstetric outcome depends on the available standard of care. Despite being the tertiary fetal medicine centre in West Yorkshire, the prevalence of red cell antibodies, and the outcome of pregnancies associated with these antibodies at the Leeds University Teaching Hospitals Trust remains unreported. This article aims to provide this information for the purpose of patient education and counselling.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with the partial D phenotype when exposed to D+ red blood cells (RBCs) carrying the epitopes they lack may develop anti-D specific for the missing epitopes. DNB is the most common partial D in Caucasians and the clinical significance for anti-D in these individuals is unknown.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This article describes the serologic genotyping results and clinical manifestations in two group D+ babies of a mother presenting as group O, D+ with alloanti-D.
RESULTS: The mother was hemizygous for RHD*DNB gene and sequencing confirmed a single-nucleotide change at c

ABO incompatibility and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency G6PD are common haematological problems affecting the newborn. The resulting haemolytic disease of foetus and newborn (HDFN) caused by either of these pathologies generally follows a benign course. It is typically characterized by mild jaundice without significant anaemia. ABO incompatibility alone as a cause of foetal hydrops is extremely rare. We report a case of a newborn baby girl with an anti-B isoimmunisation and G6PD deficiency manifesting with hydrops foetalis, anaemia and hyperbilirubinaemia, born to a mother with bl

Maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility is common but less commonly results in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). HDFN is associated with greater peak bilirubin, at an earlier age, and for longer duration than other causes of hyperbilirubinemia. It poses a substantial risk for kernicterus and accounts for the majority of exchange transfusions for hyperbilirubinemia. Advances in diagnosis and management are described, from identification of the alloimmunized pregnancy by maternal ABO and Rh typing, antibody screen (indirect Coombs test), identification and titration; laborato

Despite generalisation of anti-D immunoprophylaxis, RhD allo-immunisation still remains the major cause of severe haemolytic disease of the fetus and of the newborn (HDFN). The routine follow up of pregnant women comprises: the ABO/D, Rh/Kell red cells typing and the search for irregular antibodies. In case of anti-D immunisation, the paternal Rh phenotype, when known, provides useful information regarding the probability for the fetus to have inherited the D antigen and thereby to be exposed to the risk of HDFN. The antibody titre, which is predictive of possible in vivo haemolysis, must be i

BACKGROUND: Clinically significant antibodies to high-incident antigens present a challenge in hemolytic disease of the newborn. Antigen-negative blood may be difficult to obtain for intrauterine transfusion (IUT). In these instances, maternal blood is de facto compatible regardless of an ABO mismatch.
CASE REPORT: A group B/D-- woman with a history of hemolytic disease of the newborn due to anti-Rh17 (titer 256) presented to the obstetrical clinic at 12 weeks gestation for management of her third pregnancy. She consented to donate blood for possible IUT.

BACKGROUND: This study report the results obtained in a retrospective analysis of the foetal-maternal alloimmunizations observed from 1993 to 1999 in the South-East area of the Venice province.
METHODS: The data concerning 17,000 pregnancy observed in this area from 1993-1999 have been collected. For each pregnancy data concerning maternal ABO, Rh, Kk and IAT as well as foetal ABO, Rh, Kk and DAT were available. Further data (mainly antibodies concentration and specificity) were available if a foetal-maternal alloimmunization was detected and if transfusional support was given after the birth

Haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is characterised by the presence of IgG antibodies in the maternal circulation which cause haemolysis in the fetus by crossing the placenta and sensitising red cells for destruction by macrophages in the fetal spleen. Serological, quantitative and cellular assays have all been developed to predict the severity of HDFN. These assays measure and/or characterise alloantibodies in the maternal circulation. Quantitative assays which accurately measure antibody levels correlate with disease severity better than serological assays which are inherentl

Massive fetomaternal hemorrhage has been associated with numerous risk factors and can occur spontaneously. The risk is probably greater when a woman who is Rh negative has an ABO-compatible fetus. We report the case of a gravid, A-negative unsensitized patient who came to the hospital at term complaining of decreased fetal movement over the previous 24 hours. During evaluation, the fetal heart rate was found to have decreased beat-to-beat variability and repetitive late decelerations, and the mother was delivered of a 3,005 gA-positive neonate (by cesarean section) with a hemoglobin level of

Recent insights into the structure-function relationship of IgG, the nature of Fc receptors and their interactions with antibodies, and the cellular mechanisms involved in the immune destruction of IgG-sensitized cells have all contributed to a fuller understanding of the role of Rh antibodies in HDN. As this understanding has increased, so different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have been developed and evaluated in order either to predict or ameliorate disease severity. The role of Rh antibodies in HDN can be considered in three contexts: maternal anti-D, monoclonal anti-D and prophyl
