BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) due to rhesus D (RhD) immunization is a potentially life-threatening situation for which use of Rh Immunoglobulin (RhIg) has decreased risk drastically. Determination of fetal RHD on maternal plasma can be used to restrict prenatal RhIg administration to women carrying an RhD-positive child, avoiding unnecessary administration of blood-derived products.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The aim of this study is to determine the performance of fetal RHD typing in our center. We prospectively collected 205 fetal RHD and 127 serological cord

The use of probiotics brings numerous benefits to the immune system, including an increase in antibody production. The development of ABO antibodies may occur naturally due to the bacteria of the intestinal microbiota. However, high titers of ABO antibodies can lead to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn and can cause immune transfusion reactions. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic consumption on ABO antibody titers in humans. ABO blood group, ABO antibody titer, and fecal pH and Bifidobacteria concentration were determined for 126 healthy individuals

Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn is a syndrome associated with immune destruction of the fetal and newborn red cells by maternal red cell alloantibodies. The detection of anti-M in antenatal screening can be responsible for neonatal red cell aplasia. A 32-h-old full-term neonate admitted with inconsolable cry and mild fever. Laboratory tests revealed progressive anemia and hyperbilirubinemia on day 3. The peripheral blood smear showed evidence of hemolysis and reticulocyte count was reduced. Intensive phototherapy and antibiotics were started after ruling out other causes of hyperbil

UNLABELLED: Since the discovery of the Rh blood group system in 1940, a greater understanding of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) was gained. In the years thereafter, researchers and clinicians came to the current understanding that fetal and neonatal red blood cells (RBC) are hemolyzed by maternal alloantibodies directed against RBC antigens potentially leading to severe disease. Preventative measures, such as Rhesus(D) immunoprophylaxis (RhIG), have greatly decreased the prevalence of Rh(D)-mediated HDFN, although a gap between high-income countries and middle- to low-income

INTRODUCTION: Maternal red cell alloimmunization to Rh antigen in pregnant women occurs when the immune system is sensitized by foreign red blood cell surface antigens, in this case fetal red blood cells, inducing an immune response. Various antigens of blood group systems may cause alloimmunization, especially the Rh, Kel, Fy, JK, and MNS systems. This study aimed to determine alloimmunization to the different frequencies of Rh antigen among pregnant women in South Western Uganda.
METHODS: A total of 1369 pregnant women consented and were recruited into a cross-sectional study during their r

The MAM blood group system (International Society of Blood Transfusion [ISBT] 041) consists of one high-prevalence antigen to date, first detected in a 31-year-old woman during her third pregnancy. Epithelial membrane protein 3 (EMP3) was recently identified as the gene coding the MAM antigen. Six unique genetic variants have been described in EMP3 in 11 MAM- individuals. EMP3 is an 18-kDa glycoprotein with a large extracellular domain containing at least one N-glycosylation site. The normal function of EMP3 is still unclear, but ex vivo culture of erythropoietic progenitor cells from MAM- ind

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is a clinically significant problem that may potentially affect any pregnancy. Direct antiglobulin test (DAT) is considered to be an important test in identifying newborns who are suspected to have HDN. This study aims in reviewing data regarding a positive DAT result concerning etiology and the development of HDN over a period of 10 years.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective study of all neonates with a positive DAT result between January 2011 and December 2020 was performed. Data were obtained from patients' electronic hosp

BACKGROUND: Youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represent a growing population with significant service needs. Prominent among these needs are high rates of co-occurring psychiatric conditions that contribute to increased functional impairments and often necessitate mental health services. Executive functioning deficits are associated with ASD as well as common co-occurring conditions (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and an evidence-based intervention has been developed and tested to address executive functioning within the school context. There is an urgent need to imple

Next to A and B antigens, agglutinogen D exhibits the highest immunogenicity. Following the transfusion of D-positive red blood cells (RBCs), almost 80% of D-negative recipients develop anti-D antibodies (Abs). Subsequently, anti-D immunization further promotes the synthesis of Abs towards other blood group antigens in or outside the Rh system. The D antigen is also involved in 95% of cases of hemolytic disease of the newborn. Transfusions, hemotherapy, grafts, and obstetric history (abortions, ectopic pregnancy, births) are all risk factors for Rh isoimmunization. In the case of ABO compatibi

OBJECTIVES: When our institution grew into an integrated multihospital health system, we were faced with the need to standardize laboratory processes, including blood bank processes, across all locations. The purpose of this article is to describe our experience of standardizing the protocols for prenatal testing.
METHODS: For each hospital in the system, we established service tiers to define tests offered on site or referred to another location. For each prenatal test, we examined the related processes for ways to improve uniformity, efficiency, and reliability. Throughout this process of s

OBJECTIVE: There are few reports of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) caused by maternal autoantibodies.
METHODS: We describe the case of a pregnant patient aged 26 years with systemic lupus erythematosus without any transfusion history who developed autoantibody with mimicking anti-E specificity. Her newborn developed HDFN caused by the maternal autoantibody.
RESULTS: The clinical symptoms of the newborn were not serious. After bilirubin light phototherapy and other symptomatic supportive treatment, the baby was discharged with a good prognosis.
CONCLUSION: This is the firs

Alloimmune hemolytic disease of the fetus or newborn (HDFN) is a rare cause of neonatal cholestasis. HDFN-associated cholestasis has most often been reported secondary to anti-D alloimmunization. In utero transfusions are also an identified risk factor. A variety of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have been described, mostly in case reports. Here, we report 2 cases of HDFN-associated cholestasis that were notable for extreme laboratory abnormalities including a peak ferritin of 24 700 ng/mL and a peak alanine aminotransferase of 1406 U/L (33.5-fold upper limit of normal). One case was du

BACKGROUND: Knowing the prevalence of blood group antigens in a given population is important to prevent hemolytic reactions. The Duffy blood group system (FY) has two main antigens, Fya and Fyb. Antibodies binding these antigens can cause immediate/delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions as well as hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. In this study, frequencies of Fya and Fyb antigen expression and FY phenotypes were determined in a cohort of Saudi blood donors.
METHODS: For this study, 143 samples were collected from randomly selected volunteer Saudi blood donors living in Jazan Prov

Blood grouping system is made of diversities of inherited specific antigen markers located on the red cell membrane. Exposure to foreign antigens not present in individual genetic make-up stimulates the production of the corresponding alloantibodies which often times is detrimental to health. The high throughput, specific and cost-effective DNA-based red cell genotyping has improved health care delivery in blood transfusion science by enhancing our understanding of the genetic variations which control the expression of red cell antigens. It improves efficiency, accuracy of test, and enhances p

This report is part of a series reporting the GRADE review performed by the 2018-2020 French Working Party on maternal red blood cell alloimmunisation. This report focusses on the clinical significance in obstetrics, as published in the scientific literature, of the rare RH antibodies, variants and antigens (i.e. excluding conventional RH1 trough RH8 antigens, RH12, RH22 and RH27, which are discussed in other reports of this series). Extremely severe or severe haemolytic disease of the fetus and the newborn (HDFN), leading to death or requiring transfusions, have been reported for: anti-RH1 (-

Jaundice is one of the most common situations during the neonatal period. Alloimmune haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (AHDFN) is a major cause of pathological jaundice during the neonatal period. Since the establishment of anti-D prophylaxis, other antigens have gained greater clinical importance. The maternal antierythrocyte antibody screen is of great importance in monitoring pregnancy and in predicting the risk of AHDFN. A positive result should alert to the possibility of AHDFN and promote close surveillance of fetal anaemia, as well as neonatal anaemia and hyperbilirubinaemia.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-D alloimmunization is the most common cause of severe hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). The management of pregnancies affected by less frequent red blood cell (RBC) antibodies poses a challenge to clinicians, and perinatal outcomes are less well described. This study aimed to describe the frequency of clinically significant RBC antibodies in our pregnant population and analyze the risk of prenatal and postnatal treatment for HDFN in relation to our national risk classification system and management guidelines.
