The effect of infantile colic training given to parents on the neonatal infantile colic level and crying duration.

Infantile colic is an important problem encountered during the first months of life. This study investigated the effect of infantile colic training provided to parents on the severity of neonatal infantile colic and the duration of crying. The research used a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study was conducted among the mothers and fathers of newborns who attended a Family Health Center between May and October 2024 and were diagnosed with infantile colic. A power analysis was conducted, and the sample consisted of 60 parents. Parents received infantile colic training in a single session

A Clinically Oriented Framework for Real-Time Heart Rate Variability Analysis: A Novel Approach To Personalized and Robust Monitoring.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a well-established, noninvasive measure of autonomic nervous system activity and is associated with clinical outcomes. Although real-time monitoring of HRV is valuable in clinical practice, its effectiveness is often compromised by major challenges: high inter-individual variability and frequent data contamination from procedural artifacts. To address these challenges, we developed and validated a computational framework for robust and personalized real-time HRV analysis oriented toward clinical application. The framework performs simultaneous analysis and visua

Modular tools for the analysis of pulmonary histological images: A pilot study on the differential thanatological diagnosis between born alive and stillbirth.

The determination of autonomous life signs in neonatal bodies is crucial in forensic practice, given its numerous legal implications. Current techniques, not individually exhaustive, often focus on verifying the occurrence of autonomous respiration, despite potential artifacts from decomposition and/or resuscitation efforts. This preliminary study proposes a novel technique for more accurate differential diagnosis by using modular tools to histologically analyze neonatal lungs. Lung sections, obtained from one fetal intrauterine death, two postnatal deaths due to intrapartum asphyxia, and one

Transfer of organic ultraviolet absorbers consumed by laying hens to various tissues in newborn chicks.

Some exogenous organic pollutants can be accumulated in animals and subsequently be transferred to their offspring. However, the accumulation and maternal transfer characteristics of organic ultraviolet absorbers (OUVAs) in terrestrial species remain poorly understood. This study investigated the accumulation of six OUVAs in domestic hens and their eggs, as well as the subsequent maternal transfer behaviors. Following continuous oral exposure to OUVAs, the average concentration and clearance half-life (33.0 days) of UV-327 were found to be higher than those of the other chemicals in target tis

Unroofed coronary sinus and persistent left superior vena cava: a rare neonatal venous anomaly.

Approach to abnormal cardiovascular signs in the early neonatal period is challenging due to delayed fetal adaptation, closure of the patent ductus arteriosus and physiological immaturity. We present a rare case of unroofed coronary sinus (UCS) with persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) in a term neonate who presented with recurrent desaturation episodes and persistent oxygen requirements. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed this rare venous anomaly, which is mainly reported in the older population and primarily as an incidental finding. TTE with an agitated saline study was the

A decision-tree model to evaluate the impacts of workforce investments aimed at strengthening emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) facilities in Burundi.

INTRODUCTION: Human resources for health (HRH) in low- and middle income countries (LMICs) are often allocated irrationally based on normative policies that ignore service delivery patterns and health outcomes, failing to account for costs and expected benefits. To help Burundi rationalise scarce resources and tackle health system inefficiencies, we developed four workforce investment scenarios aimed at strengthening emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) facilities and predicted the costs and benefits associated with these investment proposals over the 2025-2030 timeframe. METHODS: We

Moving in the water: A randomized controlled trial on the effects of aquatic therapy on general movements and clinical outcomes in preterm newborns.

BACKGROUND: Bucket hydrokinesiotherapy, a supportive aquatic intervention for newborns, has been widely applied, although it lacks robust evidence regarding its clinical and neuromotor effects. While the General Movements Assessment (GMA) sensitively detects early neurological risk, the influence of therapeutic interventions on general movements (GMs) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effect of hydrokinesiotherapy on the GMs of hospitalized preterm infants and their clinical outcomes. METHODS: Parallel-arm randomized controlled trial in which newborns were randomly

The hemodynamic impact of congenital heart diseases during fetal-to-neonatal transition: an in-silico investigation.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a significant congenital anomaly, with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and transposition of the great arteries (TGA) being commonly encountered. Despite advancements in prenatal diagnosis and postnatal care, predicting neonatal outcomes remains difficult due to fetal compensatory mechanisms. This study utilizes and adapts existing mathematical models, without patient-specific parameters, to simulate the hemodynamic effects of VSD and TGA during the fetal-to-neonatal transition, validated against literature data. METHOD: The model uses a closed-loo

Pre-pregnancy body mass index and neonatal body weight in Japanese women with gestational diabetes mellitus: Hamamatsu GRACE Study 1.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is closely associated with adverse fetal outcomes. Maternal underweight is associated with low birth weight (LBW) and small for gestational age (SGA). Despite the high proportion of underweight women with GDM in Asian populations, evidence on the association between underweight and the risk of LBW or SGA in GDM is limited and inconsistent. The aim of this study is to investigate this issue in Japanese women with GDM. We enrolled 641 women with GDM at the Hamamatsu University Hospital. Data on maternal body mass index (BMI), and fetal birth weight (including

Uptake of the Birth Dose HBV Vaccine and Associated Factors Among Children in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Analysis Using Recent Demographic and Health Survey Data.

The hepatitis B virus birth dose vaccine (HepB-BD) is administered within the first 24 h after birth. When given during this period, along with at least two additional doses, it effectively prevents perinatal HBV infection and induces immunity. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a significant public health problem that can cause substantial mortality and morbidity worldwide. The uptake of the HepB-BD vaccine varies across different regions, with more than 70% birth dose coverage observed only in the Americas and the Western Pacific regions. In contrast, coverage in the African Region is gene

Gestational exposure to metals and small vulnerable newborns: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Small vulnerable newborns (SVNs), defined as babies affected by preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), or low birth weight (LBW), face a substantially increased risk of chronic diseases over their lifespan and premature mortality. Gestational exposure to heavy metals may play a role in the aetiology of SVNs. Although previous limited systematic reviews have examined individual metal(loid)s and single SVN outcomes, their findings remain inconclusive. Given the recent surge in studies, the use of diverse biospecimens, and the narrow scope of prior search strategies, ou

Rapid anti-HPA-1a antibody quantification with a Luminex bead-based assay: A method evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High concentration of human platelet antigen-1a (HPA-1a) antibodies is reported to be associated with severe foetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopaenia (FNAIT). The gold standard for quantification of anti-HPA-1a antibodies is the monoclonal antibody immobilization of platelet antigen (MAIPA) assay, which is a laborious method performed in only a few reference laboratories. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the commercially available bead-based Luminex assay PakLx (Immucor) for quantitative measurement of anti-HPA-1a antibodies. MATERIAL

The humanitarian-development nexus and sexual and reproductive health interventions in fragile settings: A scoping review.

The concurrent need for both humanitarian and development assistance in fragile settings and protracted emergencies has been termed the humanitarian-development nexus (HDN) or the humanitarian-development-peace nexus (HDpN). We undertook a scoping review on the operationalization of the HDpN for sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health interventions in fragile settings. We screened 2,570 publications, of which 36 peer-reviewed and 27 grey literature publications met inclusion criteria. Very few included studies focused on peace aspects within the HDpN and child and

The effects of health fatalism and cyberchondria on parents' childhood vaccine hesitancy.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy is a major public health problem on a global scale, where individual choices directly affect public health and increase the risk of re-spread of infectious diseases. In particular, parental indecision about childhood vaccinations leads to weakened community immunity, placing a serious burden on health systems. Today, the ease of access to digital information has led to increased health concerns and individuals develop cyberchondria behaviors in the process of online information seeking. At the same time, individuals' fatalistic beliefs about health may also affect

Associations of cumulative adversity on Hispanic mothers' perceived stress with infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

BACKGROUND: Mothers with a history of cumulative adversity (adverse experience throughout a lifetime) can face unique challenges in maintaining mental stability when compounded with other stressors during the perinatal period (pregnancy and postpartum). Such stressors can be having infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where stress levels often escalate due to the separation from their newborn and feelings of uncertainty regarding their child’s health. This study assessed cumulative adversity levels among 200 Latina mothers with NICU-admitted infants between 2017 and 202

Mothers' experiences of support during a structured breastfeeding support programme in antenatal care: a lifeworld hermeneutic study.

BACKGROUND: Step three of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding encourages midwives in antenatal care to discuss the importance and management of breastfeeding with expectant and new parents. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding mothers' experiences of individual antenatal breastfeeding education. This study aims to explain and understand the meaning of the research phenomenon: support from midwives and partners during a structured breastfeeding support programme in antenatal care. The lived experiences of this phenomenon are interpreted from the perspectives of expectant mo
