BACKGROUND: Twin birth weight percentiles are less popular in clinical management among twin pregnancies compared with singleton ones in China. This study aimed to compare the incidence and neonatal outcomes of small for gestational age (SGA) twins between the use of singleton and twin birth weight percentiles.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 3,027 pregnancies with liveborn twin pairs at gestational age of > 28 weeks. The newborns were categorized as SGA when a birthweight was less than the 10th percentile based on the singleton and twin references derived from Chinese popul

Introduction Induction of labor (IOL) is characterized by stimulating contractions of the uterus just before the instantaneous onset of labor, with or without amniotomy. According to the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO), induction must only be carried out when there is a clear medical need for one and when potential benefits outweigh the expected harm that may be caused by it. The present study was to determine the frequency of fetomaternal outcomes among pregnant women subject to the induction of labor. Methods The present prospective cross-sectional study was conducted o

BACKGROUND: Maternal hypothyroidism has been reported to have concerns over neonatal outcomes, not only in the context of neurocognitive development but also in the short term as birth weight and neonatal jaundice.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study on 638 cases who delivered live births in the Aga Khan University Hospital after ethical approval. Data were collected on hypothyroid pregnant females who were diagnosed before conception or during their antenatal visits during the year 2008-2016. Neonatal outcomes were noted for birth weight, maturity, and ne

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a neurovisceral lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the NPC1 and NPC2 genes. These mutations cause the accumulation of unesterified cholesterol and other lipids in the lysosomes. NPC has a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, depending on the age of onset. A 15-day-old infant presented at the Seoul National University Children's Hospital with neonatal cholestasis and hepatosplenomegaly, with the onset of jaundice at 5 days of age. Despite supportive treatment, the patient was considered for a liver transplant because of progressive liver

BACKGROUND: Assisted vaginal births are carried out to expedite birth for the benefit of mothers and babies but are sometimes associated with significant morbidity for both. Various instruments are available, broadly divided into forceps and vacuum cups, and choice may be influenced by clinical circumstances, operator preference, experience and availability. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the different instruments in terms of success in achieving a vaginal birth, and the risk of morbidity for mother and baby.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth's Trials Register, ClinicalT

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis and timely treatment of neonatal jaundice and prevention of dangerous side effects of pathologic neonatal jaundice remain a serious debate. The first step in prevention of jaundice is the identification of predisposing factors. The present study aims to systematically review the maternal risk factors of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
METHODS: For this study, we searched databases including Science Direct, Cochrane Library, ISI, PubMed and Google Scholar from 1993 to 2017. The keywords searched based on MESH included hyperbilirubinemia, jaundice, infants, mothers and risk f

Hemorrhage of the adrenal glands in the neonatal period happens secondarily to birth trauma and to changes in venous pressure. Neonatal jaundice has as an infrequent etiology the presence of an adrenal gland hematoma. Symptomatic cases are rare, and if they manifest, it is usually as prolonged jaundice. We present the case of a neonate who was admitted at 20 hours of life due to isoimmune jaundice. Due to an increase in conjugatedbi]irubin, an abdominal ultrasound was requested at 10 days of life, which showed a non-vascularized right adrenal mass, 50 x 21 mm, with cystic images inside, compat

Neonatal adrenal hemorrhage (NAH) in newborn infants is a rare event that is associated with specific anatomical and vascular characteristics. It is more common in term infants and occurs more often in neonates who feature perinatal asphyxia. Symptoms that more frequently prompt to diagnosis are prolonged jaundice, detection of an abdominal mass, anemia, scrotal discoloration and/or swelling, hypotonia, lethargy, and hypertension. However, NAH may also occur without symptoms with its detection being occasional. Imaging through ultrasound scans is the cornerstone of diagnosis and follow-up moni

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal cephalohematoma and hyperbilirubinemia are often encountered after vacuum-assisted delivery. For safe obstetric practice, guidelines for vacuum procedure were published in 2014 in Japan. We aimed to identify the risk of mild neonatal complications since guideline introduction.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included singleton deliveries at term gestation from 2015 to 2019 at a single perinatal center in Japan. Incidences of neonatal jaundice requiring phototherapy, cephalohematoma, and umbilical artery pH <7.10 were determined and risk factors relevant

The authors describe an 8-day-old male infant born premature at 31 weeks and 6 days (corrected gestational age: 33 weeks) with cholestatic jaundice and cytomegalovirus (CMV) viremia found to have bilateral multilaminar hemorrhages that represented a diagnostic challenge. Fluorescein angiography (FA) ruled out vasculitis, retinitis, and neovascular process. An extensive laboratory work-up for infectious and coagulopathic etiologies was negative other than a positive systemic viral titer for CMV, but there was no retinitis based on serial exams and FA. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a right-s

Delayed umbilical cord clamping appears to be beneficial for term and preterm infants. In term infants, delayed umbilical cord clamping increases hemoglobin levels at birth and improves iron stores in the first several months of life, which may have a favorable effect on developmental outcomes. There is a small increase in the incidence of jaundice that requires phototherapy in term infants undergoing delayed umbilical cord clamping. Consequently, obstetrician-gynecologists and other obstetric care providers adopting delayed umbilical cord clamping in term infants should ensure that mechanisms

OBJECTIVES: Detection of maternal irregular antibodies against red blood cell antigen is vital in the management of hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn. There are no uniform guidelines related to antenatal antibody screening and identification in the developing Country like India. This study was aimed to identify such alloimmunization and its associations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on antenatal mothers at a tertiary care center. The mothers having a history of anti-D administration, blood transfusion, and autoimmune disorders were excluded from the study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of delayed cord clamping at 30 seconds and 1 minute on the incidence of neonatal hematocrit, anemia, maternal and neonatal complications in term cesarean delivered neonates.
METHODS: An opened labelled, randomized controlled trial was undertaken. The 160 healthy term cesarean-born neonates were randomly allocated to either 30 seconds or 1-minute groups of delayed cord clamping (DCC) (groups 1 and 2). Neonatal venous hematocrit (Hct) and microbilirubin (Mb) were measured at 48-72 hours after birth.
RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-nine neonates completed this st

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: 50-80% of term newborns develop jaundice, or hyperbilirubinemia (HB), in their first week. The vast majority have benign etiologies, including physiologic jaundice of the newborn and breast milk/breastfeeding jaundice, which do not affect the synthetic capacity of the liver, thus conferring a low risk of peri-procedural bleeding. Though uncommon, HB in the setting of sepsis, biliary obstruction, or metabolic disease, may increase procedural bleeding risk. Circumcision of neonates with HB has not been well studied. We sought to characterize practice patterns among So
