BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Mucormycosis (also called black fungus) is an opportunistic serious fungal infection caused by mucormycetes. It can occur in diabetes mellitus patients and other immunosuppressive conditions with recent predisposing factors such as maxillofacial surgery and corticosteroid usage.
METHODS: In this study, 14 patients were referred to the otorhinolaryngology or ophthalmology ward of Shafa Hospital (Kerman, Iran) with primary symptoms of nasal fullness and facial nerve dysfunction; they were admitted to the hospital to rule out the fungal infection. An endoscopic biopsy was

Mucormycosis is a fulminant angioinvasive fungal infection that occurs in an immunocompromised condition, most commonly in diabetic patients. Rhino-cerebral and pulmonary infections are common but may also lead to disseminated disease associated with a high mortality rate (almost 100%). Here we report on an elderly diabetic lady presented with a headache and altered level of consciousness and peri-orbital swelling following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Imaging studies revealed a single large space-occupying lesion in the frontal lobe extending to the left orbit and sinusitis. An excisi

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis of the head and neck region is a rare but aggressive fungal infection that usually involves immunocompromised patients. More infrequently, this infection can also occur in people with no otherwise known underlying immunological deficit. This rarity usually causes a delay in diagnosis and may severely decrease the chance of survival in these patients. In this study, we present an extreme case of mucormycosis in an immunocompetent patient. By conducting a thorough review of the literature, we aim to increase our knowledge on this matter. Our goal is to improve diagnosi

Mucormycosis is a common opportunistic fungal infection with a disseminated nature. Despite being a devastating disease with the involvement of multiple upper cranial nerves, the implications of the seventh cranial nerve have been infrequently encountered. Although the radiological evidence with sinus destruction supports the diagnosis, histological specimen showing fungal elements confirms it as fungal culture doesn't always demonstrate a high diagnostic yield. Early detection and multimodal treatment are mandatory to prevent detrimental outcomes and to control the disease progression. We, he

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the incidence of secondary infections (both bacterial and fungal) has increased due to immune suppression associated with the use of corticosteroids or broad-spectrum antibiotics as a part of COVID-19 treatment protocol, which may exacerbate a pre-existing fungal disease or cause a new infection. Ophthalmologists are often involved in taking medical and surgical decisions in these complex cases. In this regard, a strong clinical suspicion should be applied to possible secondary fungal infections in COVID-19. Their early diagnosis and treatment may r

UNLABELLED: Invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) is a rare disease that requires careful attention and prompts management due to its high mortality among pediatric patients with hematological malignancies. This is a retrospective analysis of pediatric patients with hematological malignancies treated at Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt 57 357 (CCHE) through the period from 2008 till 2016 with proven IFS. Thirty-four patients were diagnosed with IFS. Five (15%) patients had an invasive rhino-cerebral fungal disease. Mucorales were isolated in 50% (n = 17) patients, Aspergillus in 38% (n = 13) patient

With the evolution of COVID-19 disease, the emergence of more complications associated with COVID-19 is taking place. Mucormycosis is the most common opportunistic fungal infection encountered after COVID-19. In this case report, we describe a case of a 61-year-old male type 2 diabetic with sino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis infection who was treated with conventional guidelines for a recent COVID-19 infection and further presented with generalized tonic-clonic status seizures. Neuroimaging revealed sino-orbital mucormycosis with right frontal lobe abscess. He was treated with anti-epileptics,

Mucormycosis is a devastating fungal infection seen in patients who are immunosuppressed or in severe inflammatory states. Mucormycosis has been increasingly seen in the setting of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. We describe a 68-year-old male with a past medical history of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus who presented with acute vision loss and was found to have concomitant diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection on presentation. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis was suspected given the patient's presentation and was

Mucormycosis is an acute and aggressive fungal infection usually, but not exclusively, occurring in immunocompromised individuals. Lack of knowledge and awareness in developing countries hinders timely management. This case highlights the importance of a prompt index of suspicion for the timely and aggressive intervention of mucormycosis to the Tanzanian community. We report a case of fatal rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis in a diabetic patient presenting at a tertiary hospital in the Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania. Nasal deformity, proptosis, chemosis and left-sided hemiplegia were evident o

Coronavirus disease has taken a toll on everyone's lives either physically or emotionally throughout the world. One of the most serious complications occurring currently in covid-positive and recovered patients is the deadly invasive mucormycosis. There are five clinical types of mucormycosis, out of which rhino-orbito-cerebral is the most common form (44%-49%). Management includes early diagnosis, control of the underlying diseases, and aggressive medical and surgical intervention. In patients undergoing maxillectomies, the use of immediate surgical obturators has become the gold standard. Th

BACKGROUND: Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a serious invasive fungal infection that is one of the most aggressive and lethal of invasive mycoses. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been linked to immune dysregulation, and patients with COVID-19 have been reported to be at risk for developing invasive fungal infections. This study is conducted to evaluate the concurrence of mucormycosis among COVID-19 patients.
METHODS: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, hospital records of patients with mucormycosis, as well as COVID-19 admitted to Khalili Hospital, as the major referral center

In a fast-evolving COVID-19 pandemic, co-infection with mucormycosis has been reported in some parts of the world. It is still unknown whether one of the either diseases makes the patient susceptible to developing the other. The co-occurrence of them significantly elevates the mortality risk and is commonly reported in immunocompromised individuals. We herein report a case of COVID-19 infection with rhinocerebral mucormycosis without prior steroid use or underlying immunosuppressive diseases.

COVID-19 which first raised its deadly head in December 2019, has now engulfed the entire planet with its fire and fury. Mankind has been literally held to ransom by this micro-beast which has caused so much pain, sorrow and suffering, leaving behind scores of people dead and millions sick and gasping for air (quite literally!) The whole world is in disarray since the past 16 months, and now a new deadly superadded fungal infection has appeared in COVID-19 patients, in parts of the Indian subcontinent; namely mucormycosis, the deadly "black fungus." This persistent, unrelenting fungal infectio

The authors report the case of a 42-year-old female with history of type I diabetes mellitus and recent episode of diabetic ketoacidosis who presented with symptoms of epistaxis, gastrointestinal upset, hyperglycemia, confusion, and a cough. She was found to have rhino-cerebral mucormycosis with associated multi-focal strokes and a left internal carotid artery pseudoaneurysm. Her infection was successfully treated with dual-antifungal therapy consisting of liposomal amphotericin B and isavuconazole, and required only minimal surgical debridement.

Mucormycosis is a rare but aggressive and fatal infection that is prevalent in immunocompromised patients. The variation in its clinical presentation and the lack of specificity are misleading and lead to a delay in the diagnosis and management. However, the era of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is marked by the increasing emergence of Mucor infections, now identified as coronavirus-associated mucormycosis (CAM). Although many clinical forms exist, the most encountered in CAM is rhino-orbito-cerebral, as already reported in India. We present a case of a 56-year-old male patient with uncon

Mucormycosis is caused by the fungi belonging to the order Mucorales and class Zygomycetes. The incidence of mucormycosis has increased with the onset of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections leading to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This rise is attributed to the use of immunosuppressive medication to treat COVID-19 infections. Authors have retrospectively collected data of our cases of mucormycosis diagnosed from April 2020 to April 2021 at our institute. A total of 20 patients with rhinocerebral mucormycosis were studied. Most of the study subject
