Zygomycosis and aspergillosis are two serious fungal infections that are commonly seen in immunocompromised patients. Since both of these infections involve fungi that invade vessels of the arterial system, an early and rapid diagnosis by direct examination of KOH mounts of the relevant clinical sample can clinch the diagnosis. Here, we present a case of a 60-year-old diabetic patient who presented with swelling and pain over the nose and left eye for 7 days with loss of vision in the left eye. After investigation, the patient was diagnosed as having rhinocerebral mucormycosis and aspergillosi

A 70-year-old Japanese man undergoing remission induction therapy for acute monocytic leukemia (AML-M5b) developed fever and headache, and was started on antibiotics and liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB). There was no improvement, and computed tomography and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed acute rhinosinusitis and brain abscess. Successful endoscopic endonasal surgery was performed at this point, providing drainage for the rhinosinusitis and abscess. Histopathological findings showed the mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis, caused by saprophytic fungi of the order Mucorales of the class zygomycetes, is a rare opportunistic fungal infection, which has a rapidly progressive and fulminant course with fatal outcome. Mucormycosis can result in an acute, rapidly advancing and occasionally fatal disease caused by different fungi typically found in the soil in association with decaying organic matter such as leaves, compost piles, or bread molds. Mucormycosis is not contagious and does not spread from person to person. We report a case of palatal perforation by rhino-maxillary mucormycosis in an immunocompr

Here we present a case of a poorly controlled diabetic who developed extensive rhinocerebral mucormycosis. Systemic and intrathecal amphotericin were not able to improve his life threatening infection. Therefore, salvage therapy with intracavitary amphotericin B deoxycholate was used to instill antifungal therapy directly into the patient's brain abscess. For proper dosing of intracavitary amphotericin B deoxycholate, we devised a formula which can be theoretically applied for all intracavitary therapies. Unfortunately, the patient's family withdrew care 6 days after starting intracavitary amp

Introduction Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) is a rare, frequently lethal, opportunistic infection of the paranasal sinuses and brain caused by fungi of the Mucoracea family. The overall global incidence is low, with the condition most commonly found in India and the Middle East. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are essential. Overall mortality is high; reported rates range from 25-60%. Its infrequent presentation can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for centers not familiar with the condition. Objective We aimed to evaluate patient demographics, clinical presentation,

Osteoporosis is a serious health problem that diminishes quality of life and levies a financial burden on those who fear and experience bone fractures. Physical activity as a way to prevent osteoporosis is based on evidence that it can regulate bone maintenance and stimulate bone formation including the accumulation of mineral, in addition to strengthening muscles, improving balance, and thus reducing the overall risk of falls and fractures. Currently, our understanding of how to use exercise effectively in the prevention of osteoporosis is incomplete. It is uncertain whether exercise will hel

BACKGROUND: to avoid a new spread of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, the post lockdown period requires the implementation of effective strategies for the case finding and contact tracing. The presence of asymptomatic subjects in the population, that are responsible for about 30% of the new infections, may complicate this phase. Serological tests for the measurement of immune response could represent an effective tool for the rapid monitoring of the population with asymptomatic infections and for estimating the proportion of immune in a territory, too.
OBJECTIVES: to describe the distribution of the

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a group of rare but life threatening angioinvasive infections caused by fungi of the order Mucorales that often occurs in immunocompromised patients and individuals with poorly controlled diabetes. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis can mimic sinusitis but can rapidly progress to deeper disease and cause facial necrosis. Facial vascular thrombosis is a rare complication of mucormycosis and can confound diagnosis of the disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 25-year-old female with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus who initially presented with symptoms

Background: Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive, angioinvasive fungal infection that has a predilection for the paranasal sinuses and adjacent mucosa. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) is the most common form and is known to invade the skull base and its associated blood vessels-leading to mycotic aneurysms, ischemic infarcts, and intracerebral hemorrhage. There are documented cases of mechanical thrombectomy in ischemic stroke due to RCM, however, there are no known cases that were diagnosed primarily by histological and pathological analysis of the embolus. We present a case of treatment of

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rare fatal fungal infection which is on a growing trend, particularly among immunocompromised patients. Immunosuppressive drugs, including corticosteroids and antimetabolites, increase the risk of this infection. Herein, we reported the case of fulminant rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a patient with ulcerative colitis receiving azathioprine and corticosteroid.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital in a state of coma with an extensive necrosis in her nose. She was afflicted with intestinal bleeding after 1 month of

We describe two cases of hypertension and hypokalemia due to mineralocorticoid excess caused by posaconazole treatment of coccidioidomycosis and rhinocerebral mucormycosis infections, respectively. Clinical laboratory evaluations, including a comprehensive analysis of blood and urine steroid profiles, revealed low renin and aldosterone and indicated as the underlying mechanism primarily a block of 11β-hydroxylase activity in patient 1, whereas patient 2 displayed weaker 11β-hydroxylase but more pronounced 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 inhibition. The results show that both previously sugg

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to prospectively analyze the effectiveness of a treatment protocol in patients diagnosed with rhinocerebral mucormycosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This series included ten patients who reported with suspicious clinical signs of mucormycosis. The diagnosis was established by histopathology, and computed tomography imaging was used to assess the extent of spread. All patients were treated with immediate radical surgical debridement and antifungal chemotherapy with amphotericin B. Simultaneous correction of the underlying immunosuppressive condition was c

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rapidly life-threatening disease caused by a fungal infection. Every diabetic patient with sinusitis symptoms, headache, and visual changes needs radiological approach and nasal endoscopy to rule out mucormycosis. The mortality rate is 50%-85%, despite an early diagnosis and a correct treatment.

Mucormycosis is a rare, rapidly progressive life threatening opportunistic fungal infection, with rhinocerebral mucormycosis being the most common type. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis usually presents symptoms similar to sinusitis and orbital cellulitis during its early stage, which often leads to a misdiagnosis at the very beginning, and progresses rapidly to endophthalmitis, blindness, sclera perforation, eyeball atrophy, and even gets the central nervous system involved, thus leading to death. Mucormycosis is particularly common in patients with poor glycemic control, ketoacidosis and immunosuppres

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection, often life-threatening. We report an unusual case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis in an immunocompetent patient. A 23-year-old male presented with headache, speech disturbance and hearing difficulty for 4 weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed right cerebellar abscess and enhancing soft tissue in the nasal cavity, extending to cranial and infratemporal fossae. Computed tomography (CT) revealed the widening of foramen rotundum and sclerosis involving the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses. MR Spectroscopy revealed multiple peaks between 3

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fulminant fungal infection which mainly affects the immunocompromised individuals. It begins in the nose and paranasal sinuses due to the inhalation of fungal spores. The common predisposing factors include diabetes mellitus and immunosuppression. Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection caused by nonspore-forming, anaerobic or microaerophilic bacterial species of the genus Actinomyces. It is a suppurative and chronic granulomatous disease characterized by abscess formation, tissue fibrosis and draining sinuses rarely diagnosed in humans. A case of rhinocerebral

A 17-year-old girl developed invasive rhinocerebral mucormycosis during intensive re-induction chemotherapy for relapsed pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Due to the high case fatality rate for invasive mucormycosis in profoundly immunosuppressed patients, an aggressive treatment regimen was pursued. In addition to the standard of care treatments with intravenous amphotericin and aggressive surgical debridements, she received intraventricular amphotericin to the brain via an Ommaya reservoir, hyperbaric oxygen treatments, filgrastim, intravenous immunoglobulin and antifungal in vitro synergy

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) can lead to internal carotid artery thrombosis. Here, we report the first case of RCM with temporal artery thrombosis following HLA-haploidentical stem cell transplantation in an adolescent presenting with low-grade fever, right mandibular pain, and right jaw claudication. This case suggests that RCM can cause temporal artery thrombosis and should be considered as a differential diagnosis in severely immunocompromised patients with maxillary sinusitis presenting with jaw claudication.
