Agreement and diagnostic performance of a smartphone-based bilirubin assessment tool for screening neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is common and may lead to severe neurological injury if not detected and treated promptly. Total serum bilirubin (TSB) remains the reference standard, while transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) is commonly used for non-invasive screening. Smartphone-based bilirubin assessment may provide a supplementary approach for neonatal jaundice screening. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the agreement, correlation, and diagnostic performance of a self-developed mobile application for bilirubin measurement compared with TSB and TcB in screening neonatal hyperbilir

Effect of early skin-to-skin contact after vaginal birth on neonatal stress and day-5 bilirubin levels: a randomized trial.

This study aimed to examine the effects of early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) on neonatal stress as the primary outcome and-together with early initiation of breastfeeding-on fifth-day total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels as a secondary outcome. Mother-newborn dyads were randomly assigned to the control (n = 30) or SSC group (n = 30). Neonatal stress was assessed immediately after birth, under a radiant warmer, and during intramuscular (IM) vitamin K injection using the Newborn Stress Scale (NSS); the SSC group was evaluated five minutes after SSC initiation. TSB levels were measured on the fifth

Therapeutic equivalence of intermittent and continuous phototherapy for neonatal jaundice: a systematic review & meta-analysis with regression and trial sequential analysis.

UNLABELLED: Phototherapy is the mainstay treatment for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, but the optimal delivery strategy remains debated. Intermittent phototherapy (IMPT) has been proposed as an alternative to continuous phototherapy (CPT) that may achieve comparable bilirubin reduction with fewer adverse effects. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the comparative efficacy and safety of IMPT versus CPT in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched through June 2026 for randomized controlled trials comparing IMPT

Determinants of length of hospital stay in non-infectious neonatal jaundice: A large retrospective cohort study.

BackgroundNeonatal jaundice is a leading cause of newborn hospitalization in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet factors influencing length of hospital stay (LOS) in non-infectious cases remain poorly characterized.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 1262 neonates with confirmed non-infectious jaundice admitted to a tertiary referral hospital in southern Vietnam between January 2024 and June 2025. Demographic characteristics, admission bilirubin levels, complete blood count (CBC) parameters, and derived inflammatory indices were evaluated. LOS was analyzed primarily as a continuous ou

Short-term temporal variation in the early-life gut microbiota links maternal clinical phenotypes to neonatal jaundice.

BACKGROUND: Maternal clinical phenotypes shape the neonatal gut microbiome and influence infant health outcomes, yet the microbial mechanisms linking maternal conditions to neonatal jaundice remain largely unknown. To investigate this, we characterized bacterial community profiling in prenatal maternal feces, meconium, and postnatal Day 3 neonatal feces from a mother-infant cohort, and integrated microbiota-phenotype association analyses and mediation models. RESULTS: We found that meconium microbiota showed slightly lower divergence from maternal fecal microbiota than neonatal fecal microbio

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Term Infants with Neonatal Hyperbilirubinaemia in China: A Retrospective Cohort Study Using the Griffiths Developmental Scales.

Background: Neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia (NHB) affects approximately 60% of term infants and is a recognised cause of bilirubin-induced neurologic dysfunction (BIND); however, its subclinical neurodevelopmental sequelae have not been well characterised at the level of specific developmental domains. Objectives: We aimed to use the Griffiths Developmental Scales-Chinese Edition (GDS-C) to characterise the domain-specific neurodevelopmental profile of term infants with NHB and to identify clinical risk factors for adverse outcomes. Methods: We conducted a single-centre, retrospective cohort stud

Dual-mode fluorescence and colorimetric detection of bilirubin using a curcumin-methylene blue metal-organic framework composite.

Neonatal jaundice requires rapid and reliable bilirubin monitoring to prevent severe complications. Here, a dual-mode (fluorescence-colorimetric) sensing platform is developed by encapsulation of curcumin within an amine-functionalized zirconium metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH₂) in the presence of methylene blue. The MOF scaffold provides aqueous stability and adsorption sites for bilirubin, while curcumin serves as the fluorescence reporter and methylene blue enables complementary optical modulation. Bilirubin induces concentration-dependent fluorescence quenching. The sensor exhibits repr

Hypernatremic Dehydration in Breastfed Neonates: Clinical Findings and Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypernatremic dehydration (NHD) is a dangerous disease that can lead to hospitalization of the infant, serious complications, and death. Despite the significant advantages of breast milk for both the mother and the baby, some neonates who are exclusively breastfed experience malnutrition in the first few days. RESEARCH AIM: This study aims to evaluate the clinical presentations, maternal and neonatal risk factors, and preventive strategies for hypernatremic dehydration in term and late-preterm infants who were exclusively breastfed. METHODS: In this study, neonates who w

Recent advances in bilirubin photoisomerization and photodegradation: in vitro and in vivo evidence for jaundice treatment.

Neonatal jaundice, characterized by unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia, remains one of the most prevalent conditions affecting both term and preterm neonates. Elevated bilirubin levels may progress to acute bilirubin encephalopathy or kernicterus, resulting in irreversible neurological damage and increased mortality. Phototherapy is the standard treatment for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, promoting bilirubin elimination through photoisomerization and photodegradation pathways that generate more water-soluble products, bypassing hepatic metabolism. Over the past decades, significant advances have b

Indocyanine green fluorescence cholangiography enables safe laparoscopic near-total pancreatectomy for diffuse congenital hyperinsulinism.

AIM: Laparoscopic near-total pancreatectomy (NTP) for diffuse congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) may reduce morbidity compared with open surgery. However, it is technically limited by uncertainty regarding the intrapancreatic common bile duct (CBD) course, risking bile duct injury or inadequate resection. We evaluated whether near-infrared indocyanine green fluorescence cholangiography (NIR ICG FC) improves intraoperative identification of the intrapancreatic CBD and supports laparoscopic NTP for medically-refractory diffuse CHI. METHODS: We performed a retrospective single-centre review of con

Evaluating the Picterus Jaundice Pro App for Neonatal Jaundice Screening by Parents: Prospective Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal jaundice is a very common condition in the first week of life requiring timely recognition of the small subset of neonates at risk of developing severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (SNH). Total serum bilirubin, as quantified through blood testing, remains the gold standard for diagnosis, whereas screening based on visual inspection has been proven unreliable in identifying which jaundiced neonates require total serum bilirubin. Picterus Jaundice Pro (JP) is a mobile health app developed for use by health care professionals and parents to screen for imminent SNH. However, pa
