Maternal and neonatal outcomes among Chinese women meeting NICE but not IADPSG criteria for gestational diabetes mellitus: A retrospective cohort study.

In China, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is typically diagnosed using the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) criteria. This study retrospectively analyzed 19152 pregnant women who underwent an oral glucose tolerance test between 2015 and 2021, comparing the IADPSG and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) criteria. GDM prevalence was 20.39% (IADPSG) and 23.67% (NICE, P < 0.01), with a moderate diagnostic agreement (κ = 0.59; P < 0.01). Compared with women having normal glucose tolerance (NGT group), women diagnosed with GDM by

Late preterm birth: how big is the problem?

Late preterm birth, defined as delivery between 34 + 0 and 36 + 6 weeks' gestation, accounts for the largest proportion of preterm births worldwide and is increasingly recognised as a distinct high-risk group. Historically, research and clinical attention have focused on very preterm infants because of their high mortality and severe morbidity. However, accumulating evidence demonstrates that infants born late preterm experience significantly higher morbidity and mortality compared with those born at term, reflecting persistent physiological and developmental immaturity across multiple organ s

A randomized control trial comparing the clinical outcome of thyroxine supplementation in thyroid peroxide antibody- negative cases in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: A normal free thyroxine level in the presence of an increased thyroid-stimulating hormone is what constitutes subclinical hypothyroidism (TSH). Changes in thyroid physiology during pregnancy result in the normal TSH range being lower than non-pregnant. Subclinical thyroid disease during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes, including, risk of adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. Prevalence in India is 6-8%. The prevalence of antibodies varies with ethnicity. Pregnancy with TSH concentrations >2.5 mIU/L needs evaluation for thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO) antibody sta

Incidence and Predictors of Necrotizing Enterocolitis Among Low-Birth-Weight Neonates Admitted to Southern Ethiopian Public Hospitals.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) has emerged over the past 25 years as the most common gastrointestinal emergency in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) worldwide. Despite significant improvements in survival among premature and low-birth-weight (LBW) neonates due to advances in neonatal intensive care, the incidence of NEC remains persistently high, largely because of the physiological vulnerability associated with LBW and prematurity. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence and identify predictors of NEC among LBW newborns in South Ethiopia. A hospital-based prospective cohort

Health Care Use and Recurrence Rate in Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn: Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is a life-threatening condition resulting from maternal-fetal erythrocyte antigen incompatibility. Although anti-Rhesus D (RhD) prophylaxis has reduced RhD-associated cases, HDFN persists due to non-RhD antibodies and gaps in prevention. Population-based data on maternal and neonatal outcomes and recurrence patterns are limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize maternal and neonatal outcomes, health care use patterns, and recurrence rates of HDFN across pregnancies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of

Extreme conformal prediction: Reliable intervals for high-impact events.

BACKGROUND: Prehospital (ambulance) care can reduce morbidity and mortality from trauma. Yet, there is a dearth of effective evidence-based interventions and implementation strategies. Emergency Medical Services Traumatic Shock Care (EMS-TruShoC) is a novel bundle of five core evidence-based trauma care interventions. High-Efficiency EMS Training (HEET) is an innovative training and sensitization program conducted during clinical shifts in ambulances. We assess the feasibility of implementing EMS-TruShoC using the HEET strategy, and feasibility of assessing implementation and clinical outcomes

Dynamic electron radiation belt at Mercury controlled by solar wind driving.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, the nitrogen bisphosphonate risedronate is licensed for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is also licensed for the treatment of Paget's disease. During a prescription-event monitoring (PEM) study on risedronate we noted a number of ophthalmological events. Recently, case reports of ophthalmological adverse drug reactions in patients taking bisphosphonates were published in the medical literature. The aim of this study was to further evaluate the association of ophthalmological events reported

Aflatoxin B1 and fumonisin B1 exposure and adverse birth outcomes in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women from Harare, Zimbabwe.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and fumonisin B1 (FB1) are toxic secondary products of fungi that frequently contaminate staple crops in resource-limited settings. Antenatal AFB1 and FB1 exposure may cause adverse birth outcomes. We conducted a retrospective substudy nested in a case-control cohort of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women ≥20 weeks gestation from Harare, Zimbabwe. Urinary aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) and FB1, biomarkers of AFB1 and FB1 exposure, respectively, were quantified in random antenatal urine via ELISA and grouped into tertiles. The adverse birth outcomes considered were low birth weight,

Neonatal Outcomes of Umbilical Cord Milking, Early Cord Clamping and Delayed Cord Clamping in Term Infants: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

Introduction Optimal umbilical cord management at birth plays a crucial role in neonatal outcomes. While delayed cord clamping (DCC) has been associated with improved neonatal haematologic and hemodynamic status, early cord clamping (ECC) remains widely practised. Umbilical cord milking (UCM) has emerged as an alternative to DCC, potentially offering similar benefits while reducing the delay in neonatal resuscitation. This study aims to compare the effects of UCM, ECC, and DCC on neonatal outcomes in term infants born between 37 and 42 weeks of gestation. Methods A total of 225 pregnant women
