Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Association with Maternal and Neonatal Complications.

Background and objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is known to be associated with pregnancy complications but there is limited evidence about the strength of these associations in recent clinical practice, especially after the introduction of strict guidelines for the management of pregnancies with GDM in a multidisciplinary team setting. The objectives of our study were to first compare the rates of complications in pregnancies with GDM with those that had pre-existing diabetes mellitus and those without diabetes; and second, to derive measures of effect size expressed as odds rat

Maternal Health, Pregnancy and Offspring Factors, and Maternal Thyroid Cancer Risk: A Nordic Population-Based Registry Study.

Thyroid cancer incidence is higher in women than men, especially during the reproductive years, for reasons that remain poorly understood. Using population-based registry data from 4 Nordic countries through 2015, we examined associations of perinatal characteristics with risk of maternal thyroid cancer. Cases were women diagnosed with thyroid cancer ≥2 years after last birth (n = 7,425, 83% papillary). Cases were matched to controls (n = 67,903) by mother's birth year, country, and county of residence. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression models adjusting for

Biomarkers of oxidative stress and its nexus with haemoglobin variants and adverse foeto-maternal outcome among women with preeclampsia in a Ghanaian population: A multi-centre prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Haemoglobin variants and preeclampsia (PE) are associated with adverse fatal events of which oxidative stress may be an underlying factor. Oxidative stress (OS) among preeclamptic women with haemoglobin variants has been well established. It is, however, unclear whether haemoglobin variants induce OS to aggravate the risk of adverse foeto-maternal outcomes in pregnant women with preeclampsia. We measured the levels of OS biomarkers and determined the association between haemoglobin variants, and adverse foeto-maternal outcomes among pregnant women with PE. METHODS: This multi-ce

Relationships between birth weight discordance and maternal and perinatal risks among twin pregnancies conceived following frozen embryo transfer.

STUDY QUESTION: Is intertwin birth weight discordance associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes following frozen embryo transfer (FET)? SUMMARY ANSWER: For twins conceived following FET, intertwin birth weight discordance is related to elevated risks of neonatal mortality irrespective of chorionicity, and the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is elevated for the mothers of dichorionic twins affected by such birth weight discordance. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: While the relationships between intertwin birth weight discordance and adverse maternal or fetal outcomes ha

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) inappropriate gonadotrophin secretion is characterized by increased pulse frequency and amplitude, elevated 24-h mean serum concentrations, and greater responses to GnRH. While the mechanism(s) responsible for this increased release of LH are not well understood, enhanced LH secretion has been attributed to increased pituitary sensitivity to GnRH and feedback influences from circulating steroid hormones. To address these considerations, we conducted a study to examine the relationships between GnRH-stimulated LH responses, episodic

Prenatal exposure to phthalates and polybrominated diphenyl ethers on neonatal health: A birth cohort study in Guangxi, China.

Few epidemiological studies have focused on prenatal phthalates (PAEs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) exposure to neonatal health in China. This study aimed to assess the associations between prenatal PAEs and PBDEs exposure and neonatal health in Guangxi, a Zhuang autonomous region of China. Concentrations of 4 PAEs metabolites (mPAEs) and 5 PBDEs congeners were measured in the serum of 267 healthy pregnant women. Birth outcomes and clinical data of neonates were collected after delivery. Mono-(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) (81.52%) and BDE47 (35.21%) were the mPAEs and PBDEs con

Association between neonatal phototherapy and future cancer: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

Phototherapy is the main treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia to prevent encephalopathy. It is generally believed to be safe; however, some studies have shown it might be associated with cancer development. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the effect of neonatal phototherapy on future cancer risk. A systematic search in 13 databases was conducted in December 2018 and updated in August 2022 to identify studies that report cancer development after exposure to phototherapy. Throughout the study period, regular manual searches were also conducted to include new s
