JOINT SOGC-CPS CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINE: Guideline No. 424: Umbilical cord management in preterm and term infants.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of deferred (delayed) cord clamping (DCC) and umbilical cord milking in singleton and twin gestations on maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. TARGET POPULATION: Women who are pregnant with preterm or term singletons or twins. BENEFITS HARMS AND COSTS: In preterm singletons, DCC for (ideally) 60 to 120 seconds, but at least for 30 seconds, reduces infant risk of mortality and morbidity. DCC in preterm twins is associated with some benefits. In term singletons, DCC for 60 seconds improves hematological parameters. In very preterm infants, umbilical cord

Indications for intensive care unit treatment among neonates born to mothers with thyroid disease: A population-based cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid diseases in pregnancy are relatively common and are associated with adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes, increasing a neonate's risk of admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The aim of this study was to evaluate the indications for increased risk of NICU admission among the neonates of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid mothers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study data consisted of all singleton deliveries (n = 734 773) between 2004 and 2016 in Finland collected from the Finnish Medical Birth Register. The odds of NICU admission (with 95% confidence intervals)

Frequency of Immediate Neonatal Complications (Hypoglycemia and Neonatal Jaundice) in Late Preterm and Term Neonates.

Background Evidence suggests that neonates born at 34-36 weeks should not be considered full-term neonates, given the magnitude of morbidities they experience compared with term infants. Neonates born at 34 to 36 weeks are at increased risk for early illness such as hypoglycemia and hyperbilirubinemia compared to term infants. Objective This study's objective was to determine the frequency of immediate neonatal complications (hypoglycemia and neonatal jaundice) in late preterm and term neonates. Subjects and methods A serial descriptive case study was conducted at the private tertiary care hos

Risk Factors of Neonatal Sepsis in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Neonatal sepsis is associated with increased mortality and morbidity including prolonged hospital stay. Management of such cases is difficult, costly and need expert centers in many cases. Therefore, continued surveillance is mandatory to identify risk factors of neonatal sepsis which help optimizing its management. With the above idea, this cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the department of Neonatology, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2017 to December 2017 to observe the effects of matern

Maternal mycotoxin exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes: a systematic review.

Mycotoxin exposure from food occurs globally but is more common in hot humid environments, especially in low-income settings, and might affect pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to synthesize the evidence from epidemiological studies on the relationship between maternal or fetal exposure to different mycotoxins and the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Multiple databases were systematically searched up to December 2018 to identify studies that assessed the association between mycotoxin exposure in pregnant women or fetuses and at least one pregnancy outcome. Studies were appraised an

Unbound bilirubin levels in phototherapy-treated preterm infants receiving soy-based lipid emulsion.

BACKGROUND: Phototherapy is an effective treatment for neonatal jaundice. Treatment indication uses total serum bilirubin (TSB), although unbound bilirubin (Bf) more accurately predicts disability risk. The goals of this investigation were to examine the response of Bf and TSB to phototherapy in preterm infants, and we hypothesized that (i) TSB and Bf respond differently; (ii) the relationship between TSB and Bf is altered; and (iii) unexpected Bf elevations are found. METHODS: One hundred and seventeen preterm infants <2 kg at birth and receiving (IL) were enrolled; and measurements of TSB a
