INTRODUCTION: Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a rare but serious obstetric emergency that can lead to liver failure and severe complications for both mother and fetus. In this case, AFLP was diagnosed after a cesarean delivery and resulted in a fatal maternal outcome. The incidence of AFLP is estimated at 1 in 7000 to 20 000 pregnancies.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 28-year-old woman underwent an emergency cesarean delivery due to grade III meconium. She had not received antenatal care and presented with jaundice. Following spinal anesthesia, a flaccid neonate was delivered but recovered

We present the case of a 43-year-old multiparous pregnant patient at 29 weeks of gestation admitted to the emergency department with altered consciousness (minimally conscious state), vomiting, and pain in the upper part of the abdomen. Ultrasound examination on admission revealed intrauterine fetal demise of a male fetus. Considering the general condition and intrauterine fetal demise, cesarean section was performed. Postoperatively, the condition of the patient required admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Treatment included corticosteroid therapy, ursodeoxycholic acid, and correction

Severe preeclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy, characterized by increased blood pressure (>140/90 mmHg) and proteinuria (≥ 300 mg/24 hours) at later than 20 weeks of gestation. Particularly in underdeveloped nations, severe preeclampsia and eclampsia have a significant negative impact on the health of expectant mothers, fetuses, and newborns. The HELLP (hemolysis, increased liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome is thought to be a subset of preeclampsia, a group of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy that also includes eclampsia. Compared to preeclampsia alone, maternal and fetal problems are

Hypertensive disorder of pregnancy is a common complication during pregnancy that affects approximately 10% of pregnancies and is responsible for nearly 14% of maternal deaths worldwide. It affects the mother and the fetus simultaneously, sometimes putting the health of the mother and the fetus at odds with each other. It may present with only hypertension and proteinuria or with life-threatening complications in the mother such as eclampsia; stroke; acute pulmonary edema; acute renal failure; disseminated intravascular coagulation; placental abruption; hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and l

Fetoscopic laser surgery occasionally causes amniotic band syndrome, in which the disrupted amniotic membrane constricts fetal body parts, leading to functional or morphological loss. We report a case of fetal distress at 31 weeks of gestation in the larger surviving twin after fetoscopic laser surgery for selective intrauterine growth restriction, necessitating emergent cesarean section. Physical examination of the infant showed constriction rings caused by a disrupted amniotic membrane on the digits, and the distal part of the right index finger was necrotic because of tight strangulation by

Parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy may have a poor outcome for the fetus. Ocular anomalies, brain damage with hydrocephalus and central nervous system (CNS) scarring, cleft lip and hypospadias, as well myocarditis and congenital heart disease have been reported. We present a case of a preterm female neonate born with ascites, hydrothorax and congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE), with a prenatal diagnosis of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The neonate was born prematurely at 32 weeks gestation with caesarean section due to a previous caesarean delivery. She was immediately intub

The aim of this review article is to summarize the available literature on physiologic and pathologic ocular changes during pregnancy and the effect of diseases in pregnancy. A literature search was conducted using PUBMED, MEDLINE, and Cochrane library in English. In addition, the cited references in the published articles were manually reviewed for the relevant results. Pregnancy encompasses a multitude of changes in all body systems, including the visual system of the female. The changes can be physiological, i.e., changes occurring in the lids and adnexa, cornea, conjunctiva, changes in tea

Vascular stress at the level of the uterus-placental unit, with chronic placental ischemia, results in intrauterine growth restriction. Expectation management can be used, when the situation allows, in cases of compensated intrauterine growth restriction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the neonatal prognosis of preterm births with and without growth restriction and term births with growth restriction in order to improve decisional accuracy regarding the termination of pregnancy. The frequency of term birth infants with low birth weight for gestational age was ~2%. The male sex, p

Eclampsia is a well-recognized major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Patient's age, occupational status, socioeconomic status, educational status, regular ANC (antenatal care) and gravidity may affect the outcome of mother and foetus. The purpose of this study is to see the fetomaternal outcome in eclampsia in relationship with gravidity. This prospective observational cross-sectional study carried out among the alternate cases of primigravid and multigravid eclamptic patients. Total number of patients was 100 eclamptic patients among them, 50 patients were primigravid

A male fetus was delivered by cesarean section with a large hemangioma on his right chest and thrombocytopenia. Clinically, Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) was suspected, and immediately he was treated with daily prednisolone (PSL) 1 mg/kg and recombinant thrombomodulin without response. Additional propranolol (1-3 mg/kg per day) and increased PSL 2 mg/kg per day therapy successfully controlled his disseminated intravascular coagulation and decreased the tumor size without serious side-effects. No relapse of KMS was observed after cease of PSL and propranolol. Combined use of propranolol and c

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of gas gangrene in a fetus at term, which was diagnosed by antenatal computed tomography (CT) imaging.
CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old primiparous woman, who did not undergo any prenatal health checks until term, developed hypertension, proteinuria, and clouding of consciousness, and experienced intrauterine fetal death. A single, mature fetus with voluminous gas bubbles was observed on CT, which was consistent with a diagnosis of fetal gas gangrene. Following the induction of labor, a dead, malodorous infant was delivered, along with foul-smelling and frothy amniotic f

Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) complicates 6-10% of pregnancies. It is defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) >140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) >90 mmHg. It is classified as mild (SBP 140-149 and DBP 90-99 mmHg), moderate (SBP 150-159 and DBP 100-109 mmHg) and severe (SBP ≥ 160 and DBP ≥ 110 mmHg). PIH refers to one of four conditions: a) pre-existing hypertension, b) gestational hypertension and preeclampsia (PE), c) pre-existing hypertension plus superimposed gestational hypertension with proteinuria and d) unclassifiable hypertension. PIH is a major cause of maternal, fet
