Case report: Fatal hematogenous gastrosplenic mucormycosis in an immunocompetent adult following sigmoid perforation, septic shock, and short-term stress glucocorticoids.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is an aggressive angioinvasive fungal infection that predominantly affects chronically immunosuppressed individuals. Hematogenous dissemination of Mucorales causing synchronous gastric full-thickness perforation and total splenic infarction is exceptionally rare, particularly in immunocompetent hosts without chronic comorbidities. To our knowledge, this presentation has not been reported in a patient with only three days of stress-dose glucocorticoid therapy following sigmoid perforation and septic shock. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a fatal case of synchronous gastri

A Kidney Transplant Patient Suffering From Multiple Colonic Ulcers and Hepatic Abscess: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We present a rare case of colonic mucormycosis with hepatic dissemination after kidney transplantation. Early diagnosis was achieved through rapid metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of blood and liver abscess samples, enabling timely intervention. The patient achieved complete clinical recovery with preserved allograft function. Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is extremely rare, reported cases frequently require colectomy (83.3%) and carry a mortality rate approaching 50%. This case highlights key management principles for intestinal mucormycosis in transplant recipients: rapid pathog

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis with no classical immunosuppression and the potential for Qat leaves chewing as an unidentified risk factor: a case report.

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is a rare, life-threatening invasive fungal infection that is often diagnosed late because of nonspecific clinical and endoscopic findings. Khat or Qat (Catha edulis) leaves may harbor environmental fungi, including Mucor species, and chronic chewing may contribute to gastrointestinal mucosal injury. However, a possible association between Qat use and gastrointestinal mucormycosis has not been established. We report a case of a 60-year-old man with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus and long-standing Qat chewing who was admitted after an out-of-hospital card

A Case of Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis in a Critically Ill Patient.

Classically, mucormycosis is a known cause of rhino-orbital infection in immunocompromised patients. There is an increasing number of cases of mucormycosis infections involving locations outside of the rhino-orbital and pulmonary systems. While the factors that dictate these unusual locations of infection are not entirely known, physicians who encounter this scenario often resort to powerful antifungal medications and surgery to manage this disease process as there are no data to provide consensus on the best treatment approach. We share an interesting case of a patient who presented with diab

Gastric Mucormycosis in a Patient With Uncontrolled Diabetes: A Rare Presentation.

Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive, invasive fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals. Although rhino-orbital-cerebral disease is the most common clinical presentation, gastrointestinal mucormycosis is rare and associated with higher mortality rates. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and chronic airway disease who presented with septic shock secondary to emphysematous pyelonephritis and diabetic ketoacidosis. She was treated with insulin infusion and intravenous meropenem for 14 days. Despite recovery from acute ki

Unveiling the Uncommon: Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis Unmasked by Gastrointestinal Bleeding.

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is a rare but life-threatening invasive fungal infection carrying mortality rates approaching 85%. We report 3 cases of gastric mucormycosis managed at our institution. Two patients presented atypically-one with refractory seizures and another with severe respiratory distress-resulting in diagnostic delays and subsequent fatal outcomes despite antifungal therapy. A third patient, diagnosed promptly following early esophagogastroduodenoscopy and biopsy, achieved complete clinical recovery. Rapid disease progression demonstrated the aggressive nature of this conditi

Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis Masquerading as an Abdominal Mass in an Immunocompetent Child.

We report a rare case of gastrointestinal mucormycosis (GI MM) in a 5-year-old immunocompetent child presenting as an abdominal mass. Initially misdiagnosed as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, the correct diagnosis was made after a surgical resection via histopathology. Prompt antifungal therapy led to recovery. This case highlights atypical presentations of GI MM and the need for vigilance in seemingly immunocompetent patients.

Appendiceal Perforation and Abdominal Wall Infection Caused by Invasive Mucormycosis in a Child with Acute Leukemia.

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is one of the most difficult forms of the disease to diagnose due to its lack of specific clinical features. It is extremely rare to observe gastrointestinal mucormycosis in pediatric acute leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy. In this report, we describe a case of a child with acute leukemia who developed invasive mucormycosis, leading to appendiceal perforation and abdominal wall infection. Initially, surgical intervention was delayed due to concerns over exacerbating bone marrow suppression, which ultimately resulted in the progression of the intra-abdomin

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis by Mucor indicus: A report of two cases.

Mucormycosis is an invasive infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales, typically affecting immunocompromised individuals, and rarely involving the gastrointestinal tract. We report two cases of gastrointestinal mucormycosis by Mucor indicus: a 77-year-old woman with a gastric ulcer and a 25-year-old man with liver lesions. Both were treated with surgery and liposomal amphotericin B; only one survived. Recognizing gastrointestinal mucormycosis in the correct clinical context is essential and requires timely surgical and antifungal treatment. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gastric mucormycosis in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: This report describes a case of gastric mucormycosis in a young Ragdoll cat with a 5-day history of vomiting. Physical examination detected mild dehydration and tenderness was elicited on abdominal palpation. The results of blood work-up and radiographic study were unremarkable; however, abdominal ultrasonographic examination revealed multiple hyperechoic neoformations at the level of the pyloric antrum, which were confirmed on endoscopic examination. Non-septate hyphae of irregular diameter with a branched appearance were observed on cytology, and histological examination reveal

Gastrointestinal and Intra-Abdominal Mucormycosis in Non-Haematological Patients-A Comprehensive Review.

Intra-abdominal and gastrointestinal mucormycosis are less frequent than rhino-orbito-cerebral and pulmonary mucormycosis, but highly lethal. Their diagnosis remains challenging due to the non-specific clinical presentation. We collected English-language cases of intra-abdominal and gastrointestinal mucormycosis in non-haematological and non-neonatal patients published up to October 2024. This review analysed the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic charts of 290 cases. A proportion of 53.4% were reported from India and the USA. The main predisposing conditions were diabetes, solid organ

Invasive Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis Presenting as Neutropenic Enterocolitis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is an underrecognized and underreported fungal infection with a high mortality rate. Diagnosis is often confounded by a non-specific constellation of signs and symptoms. We present a case of neutropenic colitis and ileocecal perforation secondary to gastrointestinal mucormycosis. CASE REPORT The patient was a 19-year-old man recently diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, on active chemotherapy. He presented with abdominal pain and tenderness, and a contrast-enhanced CT revealed neutropenic colitis. Despite broad-spectrum antibiotics, his c

Primary Invasive Mucormycosis of the Stomach.

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is a rare form of mucormycosis that can potentially result in fatal outcomes. We encountered a case of gastric mucormycosis, first identified at postmortem following the death of a patient with malignant lymphoma. This paper highlights the unique pathological features of this rare gastric mucormycosis, which were suspected to be the primary source of the infection. Additionally, we made a little thought to the potential possibility that unheated vegetables that might be contaminated with the causative fungus could have played as a vector for carrying the fungus in

Recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding after bowel perforation surgery in immunocompetent patients: invasive gastrointestinal mucormycosis: a case report.

A 73-year-old man was hospitalized for intestinal perforation and underwent surgery. Subsequently, he experienced recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding. A second operation revealed invasive mucormycosis—a rare but severe fungal infection of the digestive tract. Typically treated with amphotericin B, mucormycosis often occurs in immunocompromised patients; however, this patient had no history of immunosuppressive therapy or known risk factors. In cases of gastrointestinal bleeding, performing biopsies and cultures during endoscopic examinations when ulcers are detected is recommended to ensure ac
