Post coronavirus disease- 19 invasive renal and gastrointestinal mucormycosis.

A 68-year-old female patient who was treated with anti-viral, steroids and biologics for coronavirus disease- 19 (COVID- 19) infection presented to our facility following right abdominal and flank pain since a week. Initially attributed to pancreatitis and right sided pyelonephritis, it was diagnosed as mucormycosis on KOH mount following CT-guided renal biopsy. She underwent right total nephrectomy and Whipple's surgery followed by Isavuconazole and liposomal Amphotericin B. This is a rare presentation of renal and gastrointestinal mucormycosis in a patient without diabetes mellitus following

COVID-19 associated multisystemic mucormycosis from India: a multicentric retrospective study on clinical profile, predisposing factors, cumulative mortality and factors affecting outcome.

PURPOSE: The clinical course of COVID-19 has been complicated by secondary infections, including bacterial and fungal infections. The rapid rise in the incidence of invasive mucormycosis in these patients is very much concerning. COVID-19-associated mucormycosis was detected in huge numbers during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India, with several predisposing factors indicated in its pathogenesis. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology, predisposing factor, cumulative mortality and factors affecting outcomes among the coronavirus disease COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (C

Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis-Induced Massive Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Rectal Perforation, and Pulmonary Embolism: A Long Diagnostic Pathway in a Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is a rare systemic fungal infection, mainly observed in immunocompromised patients. It is responsible for surface and deep tissue destruction leading to perforations and hemorrhage. Its pathogenesis represented by an angio-invasion is at the origin of a local infarction and a vascular thrombosis. We report a case of gastrointestinal (GI) mucormycosis-induced multiple gastric ulcers, GI bleeding and rectal perforation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old man, with type II diabetes mellitus, was admitted to the intensive care unit for an acute abdominal pain associated w

COVID-19-associated Mucormycosis: A clinico-epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: There was an unprecedented increase in COVID-19-associated-Mucormycosis (CAM) cases during the second pandemic wave in India. METHODS: This observational study was done to know the epidemiological profile of CAM cases andincluded all patients admitted with mucormycosis between May 2021 and July 2021. RESULTS: Out of the enrolled 208 CAM cases (either SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR or serology positive), 204, three and one had rhino-orbital-cerebral, pulmonary and gastrointestinal mucormycosis, respectively. 95.7 % of the patients had diabetes, out of which 42.3 % were recently diagnosed. A Rare Case of Pulmonary and Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis Due to Rhizopus spp. in a Child with Chronic Granulomatous Disease.

Mucormycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection caused by a mold family known as the Mucorales. These fungi exist throughout the environment, especially in the soil, leaves, compost piles, or decaying woods. Humans contract mucormycosis by coming in contact with the spores from fungus either by inhalation or through cuts on the skin. The population at risk for this life-threatening infection includes diabetes mellitus patients, cancer patients, premature infants, burn patients, and immunocompromised patients. The fungi that most commonly cause mucormycosis are the Rhizopus species, and the

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis in the pediatric age group: an evolving disease.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a devastating opportunistic fungal infection resulting in significant mortality, especially in pediatric patients with predisposing risk factors. MATERIALS & METHODS: Biopsies and surgical specimens reported and proven as Mucormycosis in children under 12 years of age were retrieved from the records for three years (January 2018 to January 2021). Complete data, predisposing factors, treatment, and clinical outcome were recorded. RESULTS: 15 cases were identified, ranging from 9 days to 5 years. The male-female ratio was 3:1; three children were preterm. Fourteen c

COVID-19-Associated Mucormycosis in a Tertiary Care Hospital in India: A Case Series.

Mucormycosis is a disease that usually occurs in immunocompromised patients or those with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. The second wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in India was accompanied by an unexpected rise in mucormycosis cases, ranging from the most commonly occurring Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) to rare cases of pulmonary and gastrointestinal mucormycosis. The majority of cases that presented to our hospital were individuals with underlying diabetes mellitus who received steroids for COVID-19 before being diagnosed with mucormycosis. In this case

Mucorales PCR in blood as an early marker of invasive gastrointestinal mucormycosis might decrease the delay in treatment: A case report.

We describe the fatal case of a patient with gastric perforation due to ischemia and necrosis of the stomach secondary to generalized vascular thrombosis following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Histopathological examination of the resected stomach, spleen and omentum unexpectedly showed fungal hyphae suggestive of invasive mucormycosis. We retrospectively performed Mucorales PCR (MucorGenius®, PathoNostics, Maastricht, The Netherlands) in blood and tissue samples of this patient. The PCR was positive 16 days before time of death and 9 days before abdominal pain.

A Case of Gastric Mucormycosis in a 21-Year-Old Patient With Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis.

Mucormycosis is an angioinvasive, opportunistic infection. Diabetes Mellitus and immunosuppression are the most common risk factors for fungal infection. Without prompt treatment, the infection can be fatal. A 21-year-old male patient presented with gastritis-like symptoms refractory to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy. He recently received treatment for Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), confirmed by bone marrow biopsy and fungal sinusitis. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) revealed extensive gastric involvement by Mucormycosis. The patient was given antifungal drugs and a resection

Intestinal mucormycosis in an adult with H1N1 pneumonia on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis involving ileum is a very rare phenomenon. We present a case of 52-year-old male, known case of diabetes mellitus requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for H1N1 pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The patient had small bowel obstruction with impending perforation requiring emergency bowel resection and ileostomy. The resected bowel segment histopathology showed mucormycosis. He was treated with conventional Amphotericin-B and later changed to Posaconazole. The patient responded very well and was gradually weaned from ve

Intestinal mucormycosis initially identified by next-generation sequencing of cell-free DNA.

Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection that typically affects severely immunocompromised individuals, often resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Although early and aggressive intervention is necessary to prevent poor outcomes, diagnosis of this infection remains difficult. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of invasive gastrointestinal mucormycosis initially identified by next-generation sequencing of cfDNA from the blood, and discuss the various benefits and challenges which come with new molecular diagnostic techniques.

Rare case of gastrointestinal mucormycosis with colonic perforation in an immunocompetent patient with COVID-19.

Primary gastrointestinal mucormycosis is a rare disease associated with an increased mortality and is rarely reported in an immunocompetent host. We report the first case of mucormycosis-associated colonic perforation in a COVID-19 patient with a favourable outcome. A 48-year-old healthy male doctor in home isolation due to COVID-19 was admitted to COVID-19 intensive care unit when his symptoms deteriorated. The patient was put on non-invasive ventilation (NIV) using Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) and treatment given as per existing hospital protocol. The patient improved clinically,

Critical peritonitis secondary to gastrointestinal mucormycosis in a peritoneal dialysis patient: a case report.

Immunodeficient patients are susceptible to systemic fungal infections; however, these rarely cause secondary peritonitis. A 66-year-old man with multiple myeloma and diabetes mellitus on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) presented with cloudy ascitic fluid. He had been treated with corticosteroids for 1 month for Tolosa-Hunt syndrome. We diagnosed peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis caused by Enterococcus avium, removed the CAPD catheter, and initiated intravenous ampicillin. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an intramural gastric mass and a thinning ascending colon wall. F

Synchronous Small Bowel Gangrene With Pyelonephritis Secondary to Mucormycosis: A Disastrous Complication of COVID-19 Pandemic.

Mucormycosis is a rare infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. The infection frequently involves the rhino-cerebral or respiratory system and involvement of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and kidney are rare. It usually infects immunocompromised individuals due to various causes and an upsurge is hypothesized to be linked with irrational use of steroids during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We encountered a rare case of systemic mucormycosis that involved both renal as well as mesenteric vessels and led to ischemia of both vital organs. The patient developed massive b

Mucormycosis-induced upper gastrointestinal ulcer perforation in immunocompetent patients: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal mucormycosis (GIM) is a rare, opportunistic fungal infection with poor prognosis. Clinically, it is difficult to diagnose GIM owing to its nonspecific clinical symptoms and poor suspicion. The estimated incidence of GIM is inaccurate, and most cases are diagnosed accidentally during surgery or upon postmortem examination. GIM usually occurs in patients with immune deficiencies or diabetes. Here, we report two cases of immunocompetent young patients with GIM who had good prognosis after treatment. Compared to other case reports on GIM, our cases had unusual infectio

Intestinal Perforation Secondary to Mucormycosis Associated With Puerperal Sepsis.

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection, usually seen in diabetics, immunocompromised, or those with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Gastrointestinal involvement is uncommon but often deadly. We report a case of gastrointestinal mucormycosis causing intestinal perforation in a non-diabetic, COVID-19 negative, immunocompetent woman, associated with puerperal sepsis. A 22-year-old woman presented to our center on post-natal day five, following delivery with insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD). A Rare Case of Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis.

Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis (GIM) is a rare life-threatening angio-invasive infection. The classic risk factors include immunosuppression and metabolic derangement. Usually, there are classical risk factors in patients affected by Ileocecal mucormycosis. Few case reports have shown the absence of salient clinical presentation of mucormycosis in prolonged hospitalisation. The presence of association of mucormycosis in patients of typhoid infection is rare. Here, we present a case of invasive ileal mucormycosis occurring as a sequel to typhoid infection which lacked the typical risk factors fo
