Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is an uncommon, invasive, opportunistic fungal infection with a high mortality rate, seen more commonly in immunocompromised patients. This lethal infection has a wide range of presentations, from colonization of peptic ulcers to infiltrative disease and eventually vascular invasion. Here we present a case of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in an immunocompromised patient, which was proved to be secondary to gastric involvement by mucormycosis.

In October 2014, a hospital in Connecticut notified CDC and the Connecticut Department of Public Health of a fatal case of gastrointestinal mucormycosis in a preterm infant. The infant, born at 29 weeks' gestation and weighing 1,400 grams (about 3 pounds), had developed signs and symptoms initially consistent with necrotizing enterocolitis approximately 1 week after birth. Exploratory laparotomy revealed complete ischemia of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum; a portion of necrotic cecum was sent for microscopic examination. Following surgery, the infant developed mult

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis caused by order mucorales, an ubiquitous saprophytic mold found in soil and organic matter worldwide, is a rare but invasive opportunistic fungal infection. Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is the most uncommon clinical presentation being particularly rare, accounted for 4-7% of all cases.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report an unusual presentation of mucormycosis of ascending colon that was simulating carcinoma colon.
DISCUSSION: GI mucormycosis most commonly involves the stomach (57.5%), followed by the colon (32.3%) and the ileum (6.9%). Initial presentations may be ab

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis (GIM) is a rare opportunistic fungal infection. One third of all patients are children and of these, 50% are infants. The most common clinical mimic is necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). It has to be differentiated from this entity as the treatment is entirely different. High index of suspicion by the clinicians and the pathologists aids in early diagnosis and immediate treatment. If untreated, it has a frequent fatal outcome. Very few survivors of GIM are found in literature. We report a rare case of a surviving neonate of GIM.

Invasive mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection in immunocompromised hosts, but it carries a high mortality rate. Primary gastrointestinal disease is the least frequent form of presentation. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical in the management; however, symptoms are typically non-specific in gastrointestinal disease, leading to delayed therapy. To describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of gastrointestinal mucormycosis in immunocompromised hosts, we reviewed all cases of primary gastrointestinal mucormycosis in immunocompromised hosts reported in English

We present a case of a middle-aged female who was admitted to the hospital with a respiratory infection and subsequently developed an acute surgical abdomen secondary to a perforated viscous. She was found to have mucormycosis of the intestinal tract and eventually succumbed to the sequelae of the infection.

OBJECTIVE: To review case series of retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomies.
METHODS: Between May 2003 and May 2006, 60 laparoscopic nephrectomies were performed by a single surgeon. Laparoscopic route for nephrectomy was retroperitoneal in 50 cases and transperitoneal in 10 cases.
RESULTS: The patients included 37 males and 23 females. The mean age was 18.5 +/- 16.6 years and ranged from 2 years to 60 years. Right sided nephrectomy was performed in 31 cases while left kidney was removed in 29 cases. The indications for nephrectomy were stones (n = 29), dysplasia (n = 11), chronic pyelone

Gastrointestinal (GI) mucormycosis is a rare and life-threatening invasive fungal infection. GI mucormycosis occur in all parts of the alimentary tract, with the stomach being the most common site. Diabetes mellitus and other types of conditions associated with immunodeficiency, including hematologic malignancies, solid organ transplantation and glucocorticoid therapy, are risk factors for GI mucormycosis. There are few studies reporting cases of gastric mucormycosis in patients with liver cirrhosis, and even fewer reporting the successful treatment of invasive gastric mucormycosis in a patien

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is associated with high mortality rates. Appropriate and early antifungal therapy and prompt surgical intervention are essential.
METHOD: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: Nineteen case reports were reviewed describing adults with hematologic malignant tumors who developed intestinal mucormycosis and underwent surgery. The overall survival rate was 50%.
CONCLUSION: Intestinal mucormycosis is an infection associated with a high mortality rate although adults with underlying hematologic malignant have improved outcomes compared with other gr

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium knowlesi is frequently reported in Southeast Asian countries and is now widely regarded as the fifth malarial parasite. Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection that can occur in patients with a weakened immune system.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of acute kidney injury secondary to Plasmodium knowlesi malaria infection and mucormycosis fungal infection. In addition, the patient also had lower gastrointestinal bleeding from invasive gastrointestinal mucormycosis. P. knowlesi infection was diagnosed by blood film and mucormycosis was diagnosed by histopathological examin

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is an uncommon, life-threatening, angioinvasive infection with only one previous report of disease involving the jejunum. We present a case of invasive jejunal mucormycosis and review the literature, highlighting the rare clinical presentation and the value of molecular diagnostic methods. Given the global increase in patient populations at risk of mucormycosis, clinicians need to maintain a high index of suspicion and perform timely and appropriate evaluation to improve patient outcome.

Mucormycosis is an invasive and aggressive opportunistic fungal infection that usually presents with rhinocerebral or pulmonary involvement and rarely involves the gastrointestinal tract. The disease is acute with mortality rate up to 100%. A 68-year-old male was undergoing treatment at a local hospital for COPD exacerbation with IV steroids and antibiotics. Two weeks into his treatment he suddenly developed massive upper GI bleeding and hemodynamic instability that necessitated transfer to our tertiary care hospital for further treatment and management. An urgent upper endoscopy revealed mult

Mucormycosis of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare infection that usually occurs in patients who are immunocompromised and carries a high mortality. We report four cases of gastrointestinal mucormycosis seen over a one year period with different presentations, risk factors and different anatomical sites of involvement. A preoperative diagnosis was made only in one patient. All underwent surgery, three survived and one died postoperatively from multiorgan failure.

Mucormycosis is a fatal opportunistic fungal infection that typically occurs in immunocompromised patients. The classical manifestation of mucormycosis is a rhinocerebral infection, and although primary gastrointestinal infection is uncommon, it has an extremely high mortality rate in immunocompromised patients. Furthermore, cases of gastrointestinal mucormycosis in an immunocompetent host are rarely reported. Here, we describe our experience of a male patient, with no underlying disease, who succumbed to a bowel infarction caused by intestinal mucormycosis during mechanical ventilatory care f

AIM: To analyse the clinicopathological features of neonatal mucormycosis
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of cases of neonatal gastrointestinal mucormycosis.
RESULTS: THERE WERE SIX NEONATES WITH MALE: female ratio of 1:1. Except one all were preterm babies. The clinical presentation was abdominal distension in the majority. All were clinically diagnosed as either NEC or toxic megacolon with perforation. Neonatal gastrointestinal mucormycosis was not suspected clinically in any. All the children were explored immediately. Biopsy revealed transmural hemorrhagic necrosis/infarcti
