Management of a pediatric patient with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and cutaneous mucormycosis: a case report.

Mucormycosis is a highly invasive and rare opportunistic infection caused by mucor fungi, characterized by challenging diagnosis and rapid disease progression. It predominantly affects patients with compromised immune systems due to various reasons, such as kidney failure, long-term use of antibiotics or corticosteroids. We recently successfully treated a pediatric patient with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis accompanied by severe cutaneous mucormycosis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis nephritis accompanied by dermatophytosis i

A Global Analysis of Cases of Mucormycosis Recorded in the European Confederation of Medical Mycology / International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ECMM / ISHAM) Zygomyco.net Registry from 2009 to 2022.

We analyzed mucormycosis data from the Zygomyco.net registry (2009-2022), encompassing cases from 16 countries. India, Russia and the Czech Republic provided the largest contributions. India reported the highest case number, consistent with its substantially higher incidence compared to that of high-income countries. Among the 382 patients with mucormycosis, 236 (61.8%) were male (male-to-female ratio 1.6). The median age was 48 years [interquartile range (IQR) 32-60]. There were 59 pediatric patients (median age ranging from < 1 month to 19 years). Diabetes mellitus type 2 was the most common

Cutaneous mucormycosis in a critically ill nonagenarian patient caused by Rhizopus species treated with intravenous isavuconazole and topical amphotericin B along with wound debridement.

This case report highlights cutaneous mucormycosis in a 99-year-old patient who was effectively treated with intravenous isavuconazole and local amphotericin B after wound debridement. The patient showed significant improvement within two weeks, highlighting the importance of diagnosis and treatment for this rare fungal infection. It underscores the need for early recognition and suggests that combining antifungal treatments with surgical intervention may be an optimal strategy, even in patients lacking typical risk factors.

Cutaneous Mucormycosis in a Patient With Cirrhosis: A Case Report.

The global incidence of invasive mucormycosis (mucor) infection is on the rise due in part to an increased utilization of immunosuppressive therapies to treat malignancies and autoimmune diseases. While cirrhosis has previously been considered a risk factor for fungal infections, very little is known about the inciting factors precipitating development of isolated cutaneous mucormycosis infection. This form of mucor poses a significant mortality risk despite antifungal and surgical treatments and has been documented in only 5 patients with cirrhosis prior to our case report. This case report p

Cutaneous mucormycosis in a young immunocompetent host - a case report.

Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare disease, which commonly affects immunocompromised individuals. It is highly invasive with devastating outcomes. Prompt actions such as surgical debridement and early initiation of antifungals are necessary to prevent the infection's rapid progression. Unfortunately, due to its rarity and frequent negative fungal cultures, diagnosis, and treatment are often delayed. Here, we have described a case of a young immunocompetent individual with cutaneous mucormycosis of the arm. Her diagnosis was made on clinical suspicion, later confirmed with tissue histopathology.

Cutaneous mucormycosis in systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

Mucormycosis is a life-threatening angioinvasive fungal infection caused by the Mucorales acidophilic fungi. In the article we report a case of cutaneous mucosporidiosis caused by infection with Rhizopus arrhizus in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We analyze the causes of infection and death and concluded that cutaneous mucormycosis is a severe and refractory infection that has higher mortality in immunocompromised individuals or those with immune dysfunction. Early diagnosis and proactive treatment are paramount for a favorable prognosis.

Management and Surgical Dressing Protocol for Cutaneous Mucormycosis After a Blast Injury: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Mucormycosis is known for being an aggressive fungal infection that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Due to its nonspecific presentation, diagnosis is challenging, and a high level of suspicion is required to optimize patient outcomes. This report discusses a case of mucormycosis infection in a bomb blast victim who was identified early, treated promptly, and was eventually discharged 1 month after admission. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 40-year-old male patient who sustained a bomb blast injury. He arrived at a tertiary hospital 3 days after the injury, in pa

Invasive Cutaneous Mucormycosis in a Patient With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia on Obinutuzumab, Idelalisib, and Bruton Tyrosine Kinase Degrader: A Case Report.

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) due to Mucorales are a significant infectious complication in patients with hematologic malignancy, contributing to high mortality rates. The emergence of new targeted biologic therapies has introduced additional effects on the innate and humoral immune system, which produce variable risk for IFIs. Timely diagnosis and treatment of invasive mucormycosis can be challenging. We present a case of invasive cutaneous mucormycosis in an elderly man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), who was receiving a Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK)-targeted protein degrader tri

Monoclonal Antibodies Can Aid in the Culture-Based Detection and Differentiation of Mucorales Fungi-The Flesh-Eating Pathogens Apophysomyces and Saksenaea as an Exemplar.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of necrotising cutaneous and soft tissue infections caused by the Mucorales fungi Apophysomyces and Sakasenaea is increasing. The absence of sophisticated diagnostic technologies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) means that detection of cutaneous mucormycosis continues to rely on culture of the infecting pathogens from biopsy and their differentiation based on morphological characteristics. However, Apophysomyces and Sakasenaea are notorious for their failure to sporulate on standard mycological media used for the identification of human pathogenic fungi. Di

An Unusual Case of Chronic Delimited Rhinosinusal Mucormycosis With Secondary Cutaneous Involvement in a Patient With Ataxia-Telangiectasia Syndrome.

Mucormycosis is an immunosuppression-related fungal infection. This pathogen usually manifests as an acute and rapidly progressive, deforming, and lethal disease, but chronic forms of zygomycosis occur rarely. Here we present a case of a 15-year-old female with ataxia-telangiectasia syndrome, reporting a six-month history of recurrent sinusitis and an atypical secondary skin infection characterized by ulcerated nodules and crusted plaques, unresponsive to multiple treatments. This case highlights the changing epidemiology of opportunistic infections, which were usually confined to specific imm

Periorbital primary cutaneous mucormycosis: a case report and literature review.

Mucormycosis is a rare subcutaneous fungal disease caused by mucormycoides, which can affect the skin, nose, brain, lung, gastrointestinal tract and other system. Cutaneous mucormycosis accounts for 10-19% of mucormycosis and is one of the most common types only second to the lung and naso-brain mucormycosis. Here we report a case of periorbital primary cutaneous mucormycosis in a latent immunocompromised male with a suspected history of herpes zoster on the right head and face. He was successfully treated with local injection and oral antifungal drugs combined with debridement, and without re

Metabolic Implications of PCOS.

BACKGROUND: In children, necrotizing pneumonia (NP) is an uncommon, severe complication of pneumonia. It is characterized by destruction of the underlying lung parenchyma resulting in multiple small, thin-walled cavities and is often accompanied by empyema and bronchopleural fistulae. REVIEW: NP in children was first reported in children in 1994, and since then there has been a gradual increase in cases, which is partially explained by greater physician awareness and use of contrast computed tomography (CT) scans, and by temporal changes in circulating respiratory pathogens and antibiotic pre

Challenges in the management of severe cutaneous mucormycosis: A case of rapid progression in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus with polymicrobial implications.

Mucormycosis, a rare but life-threatening fungal infection, poses significant challenges in clinical management, particularly in patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. This case report presents the clinical journey of a 44-year-old woman who developed a rapidly progressing Mucorales infection following a domestic knife injury. Her condition, complicated by diabetic ketoacidosis and co-infection with Candida albicans, led to severe hand phlegm and sepsis. Despite aggressive intervention, the infection continued to advance, ultimately resulting in the patient's demise.
