Background Cutaneous mucormycosis has shown a significant upsurge during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the rapid progression and high mortality of cutaneous mucormycosis in this context, it is important to identify it early. However, very few studies report detailed clinical descriptions of cutaneous mucormycosis in COVID-19 patients. Objectives To describe mucocutaneous lesions of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis based on clinical morphology and attempt to correlate them with radiological changes. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care centre from 1st A

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is a rare but serious angioinvasive fungal infection that can affect the cutaneous system. Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is caused by direct inoculation and is most prevalent in immunocompromised hosts, particularly those with diabetes. A high index of suspicion is necessary for this condition in patients with rapid and deep extension of necrosis despite aggressive surgical intervention. Deep tissue specimens should be sent for fungal culture and histologic analysis for confirmation of the diagnosis. Early and aggressive debridement to prevent spread to deeper tissu

Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection characterized by rapidly progressing infarction and necrosis of host tissue, frequently resulting in death. It is most well-known for causing a devastating rhinocerebral infection, however, cutaneous mucormycosis has been documented. While this opportunistic infection generally affects immunocompromised individuals or patients with uncontrolled diabetes, mucormycosis can also present following traumatic injuries. Infection following motor vehicle accidents accounts for as little as 3% of traumatic cutaneous mucormycosis cases, however, it can have devast

Cutaneous mucormycosis may be caused by direct inoculation or hematogenous spread of mucormycetes in immunocompromised patients. Skin biopsy is characterized by a deep fungal infection with frequent angioinvasion. The fungal hyphae can usually be identified on H&E stain. We report a case of cutaneous angioinvasive mucormycosis in which the fungi were also visualized on direct immunofluorescence. A 57-year-old patient with relapsed myelodysplastic syndrome status-post allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant, diabetes mellitus, and graft-versus-host disease presented with painful, palpable, dar

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous mucormycosis is an unusual fungal infection that continues to occur. It needs aggressive surgical debridement and timely administration of antifungals due to its high fatality rate. High clinical suspicion on the part of a surgeon is required to prevent the same.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of cutaneous mucormycosis in which the patients succumbed to death, highlighting the seriousness of the condition. One patient had a lower leg ulcer and was diabetic, and the other patient had a gluteal abscess following an intramuscular injection. Tissue samples grew Rhiz

Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rapidly advancing fungal infection that most commonly occurs due to airborne spread or direct inoculation and requires early detection and prompt treatment for optimal survival. Major risk factors include diabetes, transplantations, malignancies, surgical procedures, and HIV. Diagnostic criteria are based on microscopy and culture. We present an immunocompromised patient with cutaneous mucormycosis that developed in a peristomal ulcer following a hemicolectomy procedure. Histopathologic evaluation was indicative of mucormycosis. Intravenous posaconazole treatment wa

BACKGROUND: The rarity and heterogeneity of mucormycosis make treatment variable, and no prospective or randomized clinical trials exist in plastic surgery literature. The use of wound vacuum-assisted closure in combination with the instillation of amphotericin B to treat cutaneous mucormycosis is not well documented.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man underwent left Achilles tendon reconstruction with allograft after a complete tear during exercise. About 1 week after the operation, he began having incisional breakdown later found to be secondary to mucormycosis infection, prompting presen

OBJECTIVE: We present a case of primary cutaneous mucormycosis in a patient with bone marrow failure secondary to paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH).
CLINICAL CASE: A 60-year-old male patient with a history of PNH, complicated to a severe aplastic anaemia, presented to the emergency department complaining of papules on the lower limbs that rapidly turned into necrotic plaques within 2 months. Histopathological examination showed granulomatous and suppurative dermatitis with tissue necrosis and the presence of non-septate hyphae. Molecular identification was achieved by amplification a

Mucormycosis, caused by the widespread molds of the Mucorales order, is an insidious infection that manifests in different clinical forms. Even the most benign form, the cutaneous mucormycosis, can present with severe complications and a fatal outcome in patients with a suppressed immune system and underlining comorbidities. We present a rare case of a proven primary multifocal cutaneous mucormycosis in a child with newly diagnosed acute leukemia without multiorgan dissemination. Various laboratory techniques (histopathological, cultural and molecular-genetic) were used to detect and confirm t

CASE: Two patients who sustained multiple injuries after a road traffic accident developed cutaneous mucormycosis after a superficial abrasion. In the first case, the patient was diabetic with poorly controlled glycemic status. In the second case, the patient was young and immunocompetent with no known risk factors.
CONCLUSION: Although there are few case reports of posttraumatic cutaneous mucormycosis, there is no single report describing its occurrence after a superficial abrasion. Cutaneous mucormycosis can be fatal if not identified early and treated aggressively. A high index of suspicio

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota, subphylum Mucormycotina. In developed countries, it affects patients with haematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy and those who have received allogenic stem cell transplants, while in developing countries it is seen in those with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a 67yo Chinese gentleman with background of angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) on chemotherapy. We also share the clinicopathological findings of this and correlate these

Mucormycosis is a serious fungal infection caused by fungi in the order of Mucorales. Orbital mucormycosis occurs more frequently in rhino-orbital, sino-orbital, and rhino-orbito-cerebral forms of the disease, while isolated orbital mucormycosis is much less common. Herein, we present four cases of immunocompetent children who developed primary cutaneous mucormycosis, which subsequently invaded and progressed to orbital mucormycosis following direct traumatic injury caused by pecking from Acridotheres tristis (Common Myna). Given the low prevalence of orbital mucormycosis in healthy children,

Background Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare and fulminant infection associated with high mortality. Plastic surgeons come across this infection in the settings of road traffic accidents, surgical site infections, and as a secondary infection with underlying bacterial soft tissue infections. Due to this infection's rarity and aggressive course, it is essential to initiate prompt multidisciplinary management at the first presentation. With this study, we aim to present a protocol for managing the condition. Methods This is a retrospective observational study of patients with cutaneous mucormyc

We describe a case of a 31-year-old man with a history of ocular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who presented with a large 12-cm non-resolving traumatic skin lesion on his back. Biopsy showed fungal elements, and on fungal culture, Rhizopus arrhizus (formerly R. oryzae) was isolated. Cutaneous mucormycosis is an important diagnostic consideration for a non-resolving skin lesion in an immunocompromised host. Early tissue sampling is key, and diagnostic certainty is particularly important because first line therapy, liposomal amphotericin B, has significant systemic toxicities, notable renal toxicity, a

Mucormycosis is a rare, life-threatening fungal infection. While typically affecting immunosuppressed individuals, cases in the immunocompetent have been reported, particularly secondary to trauma, and the subspecies Apophysomyces. These fungi are typically difficult to isolate. This case report describes cutaneous Mucormycosis caused by Apophysomyces complex at a vaccination site, given following a motor vehicle accident. This life-threatening infection occurred in an immunocompetent 17-year old girl, resulting in multiple hospital admissions and finally, radical surgical debridement of her l

Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare, opportunistic fungal infection that typically affects immunocompromised hosts. Current treatment consists of systemic antifungal therapy, surgical debridement, and when applicable, restoration of immune function. Despite intervention, the morbidity and mortality of invasive fungal disease remains high. There are few reports of primary or secondary cutaneous mucormycosis involving the ocular adnexa. The authors describe the course of 2 children with cutaneous mucormycosis of the eyelid treated with subcutaneous liposomal amphotericin B (LAmB) injections (3.5 mg
