We describe a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a middle-aged man with ethanol-related chronic liver disease. He presented with symptoms of fever, breathlessness for 10 days and altered mental status for 2 days. On admission, he was in septic shock and had acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He was noted to have ruptured blisters in his left axilla. Although he repeatedly had negative COVID-19 Reverse Transcription-PCR results, he had positive IgG antibodies for COVID-19. He was managed with broad-spectrum antibiotics, steroids, vasopressors and ventilation for ARDS. Over the course of

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection commonly affecting immunocompromised individuals. There has been a surge in the number of these cases during the second wave of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in India. Mucormycosis has been reported to occur concurrently or a few weeks post-recovery from COVID-19. There have been multiple case reports/case series of rhino-orbital mucormycosis in India as a complication in COVID-19 pneumonia. We report two unique presentations of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) in patients recently recovered from COVID-19. The first patient

Cutaneous mucormycosis is the third most common clinical type of mucormycosis. The signs and symptoms vary widely, and it is important to make the diagnosis as early as possible in order to achieve a better outcome. We present a systematic review of its epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment, analyzing cases published from 1958 until 2021. The review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and included 693 cases from 485 articles from 46 countries. Most publications were from North America (256 cases, 36.9%) and Asia (216 cases, 31.2%). The most common risk fact

Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare infection by the Zygomycetes class of fungi, which carries significant morbidity and mortality. While typically associated in patients with underlying immunocompromise (especially in the current era of COVID-19), it may also be seen in immunocompetent patients. We report a case of a healthy 4-year-old girl with acute right leg cellulitis and abscess formation, who required surgical debridement following poor response to antibiotic therapy and initial incision and drainage. Tissue histopathology returned cutaneous zygomycosis despite negative tissue cultures. At

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Cutaneous Mucormycosis (CM) is a less frequent type of fungal infection that can present with different skin lesions. Although these lesions appear to be benign and silent, CM rapidly progresses into the deeper layers. Given that no specific laboratory or imaging finding is described for the disease, the diagnosis is mainly based on history and physical examination. In addition, immediate debridement and antifungal agents must be commenced.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 43-year-old septic man who was hospitalized for his forefoot infection. During his admission,

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis has emerged as an increasingly important fungal disease for immunocompromised children and neonates, with the cutaneous form being one of its most common presentations.
METHODS: We present a cutaneous mucormycosis case in a 10-year-old girl and analyse reports of single cases and case series of cutaneous mucormycosis in ≤16-year-old patients, recorded in PUBMED from 1953 to 2020, for epidemiology, risk factors, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and outcome.
RESULTS: 113 cases were enrolled. Median age was 5 years (Interquartile Range [IQR] 10.9), without gender p

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is a consequence of environmental Mucorales spores inoculation at the abraded skin. In a diabetic patient, these spores germinate quickly and disseminate hematogenously to the surroundings. Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare but aggressive, invasive, and life-threatening fungal infection. Its presentation is nonspecific, but it rapidly results in necrosis of underneath tissues. Diagnosis can be readily made by KOH wet mount of excise tissue. However, a prompt diagnosis with multidisciplinary management is a prerequisite for a better outcome. We present a case of fa

Zygomycetes have been known to cause life-threatening infections in humans which are often difficult to treat. We present a rare case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a premature neonate admitted with neonatal sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis. He was diagnosed with Lichtheimia ramosa infection and managed surgically along with Amphotericin B. Low birth weight, prematurity, respiratory distress, administration of corticosteroid and broad spectrum antibiotics were identified as the potential risk factors in this case which had led to the fungal infection. Early diagnosis and prompt management is cri

Background: Cutaneous mucormycosis, while less common than sinonasal or pulmonary infections, can cause widespread tissue necrosis after seemingly innocuous encounters. The most common location of cutaneous mucormycosis is the extremities, and extensive infection has been reported after trauma or orthopedic procedures. Case Report: A 60-year-old female with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus sustained an open patella fracture after a fall. She underwent washout and internal fixation with cannulated screws and cable tension band wiring. The patient's recovery was complicated by asymptom

Opportunistic infections, including fungal infections, are dreaded complications of liver transplantation, particularly early after transplant. We describe the case of a patient that presented 6 years after liver transplant with a Lichtheimia corymbifera-infected leg ulcer, following previous COVID-19 infection and moderate rejection requiring steroid pulses. The patient required long-term antifungal therapy, repeated surgical debridement and eventually wound coverage with meshed split-thickness skin graft. Our case illustrates the challenges in the treatment of cutaneous mucormycosis and high

A 49-year-old male was involved in an accident and an abdominal computer tomographic examination revealed papillary renal cell carcinoma of the right kidney. During hospitalization, the patient was infected with COVID-19. In the following COVID-19 treatment, a black dot developed on the right side of the head and face. Antifungal therapy and surgical debridement were initiated and gradual improvement was observed.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a deadly fungal infection that mainly affects severely immunocompromised patients. We report herein the case of a previously immunocompetent adult woman who developed invasive cutaneous mucormycosis after severe burn injuries. Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) treatment was added after failure of conventional treatment and confirmation of a sustained profound immunodepression. The diagnosis was based on a reduced expression of HLA-DR on monocytes (mHLA-DR), NK lymphopenia and a high proportion of immature neutrophils. The immune-related alterations were longitudinally monito

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is an angioinvasive mucorales fungal infection. Cutaneous type formed 10.5% of cases in India in precovid-19 era. Glucocorticoid-induced immunosuppression and hyperglycemia, reusable oxygen humidifiers in COVID-19 therapy, and preexisting uncontrolled diabetes mellitus contribute to post-COVID-19 mucormycosis. However, for post-COVID-19 cutaneous mucormycosis, sufficient data is not available.
AIM: To study factors related to post-COVID-19 cutaneous mucormycosis.
METHODOLOGY: Clinical and investigation details of six patients admitted in tertiary center with post-COV

Mucormycosis is a conditionally pathogenic fungal disease with high morbidity that mainly affects patients with decreased immunity. Diagnosis relies on the histopathological examination of microorganisms with the typical structure of mucormycetes in tissues and subsequent confirmation via culture. Early detection of causative microorganisms is critical to rapidly administer appropriately targeted antibiotics. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is an innovative and sensitive technique used to identify pathogenic strains. Here we used mNGS to timely diagnose an infection with Lichthei

Mucormycosis is a rare, aggressive angioinvasive deep fungal infection caused by mucorales. The epidemiology of mucormycosis has changed in recent times with the increase in incidence, identification of new causative agents, and predisposing factors. The clinical spectrum of mucormycosis includes rhinocerebral, sinopulmonary, cutaneous, and disseminated forms. Cutaneous mucormycosis is an emerging infectious disease especially in post COVID-19 era. Cutaneous mucormycosis can be of two varieties: primary cutaneous and secondary cutaneous. Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is caused by direct inocu

Mucormycosis is a devastating fungal infection known for its angioinvasive spread and hematogenous dissemination, quickly resulting in multiorgan involvement and potentially fatal complications. Timely diagnosis is essential to facilitate early, aggressive debridement, yet the diagnosis remains difficult to obtain because of the need for culture and microscopy diagnosis. We provide case examples, which highlight diagnostic pearls and the multidisciplinary approach that are critical for improving local outcomes, preventing systemic spread, and reducing mortality.
