The incidence rate of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnancy is currently on the increase. GDM is associated with short and long-term adverse outcomes for mothers, fetuses and newborns. The aim of the present study was to compare the incidence of adverse perinatal outcomes in women with and without GDM, in addition to comparing the morbidity and mortality rates of preterm infants born to women with and without GDM. A retrospective analysis of 640 preterm infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (Qingdao, China) between January 2019

PURPOSE: Sleep quality is an important indicator of individual quality of life, which not only affects people's mental health but is also closely related to the occurrence of many diseases. Sleep disorders associated with diabetes in pregnancy can greatly endanger the health of both mothers and babies, and their hazards are strongly associated with blood glucose levels. This study explored the quality of sleep and sleep disorders in pregnant women with diabetes.
METHODS: From June 2020 to July 2021, a total of 693 patients diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy in Gansu Provincial Maternal

Babies born to severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected mothers are at greater risk for perinatal morbidity and more likely to receive a neurodevelopmental diagnosis in the first year of life. However, the effect of maternal infection on placental function and neonatal outcomes varies depending upon the patient population. We set out to test our hypothesis that maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection in our underserved, socioeconomically disadvantaged, mostly unvaccinated, predominantly African American and Latina population in the Bronx, NY would have effects evident at bi

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) are severe psychiatric disorders, commonly debuting early. Aberrances in the intrauterine environment and at birth have been associated with risk of ED. Here, we explore if, and at what effect size, a variety of such exposures associate with offspring ED, that is, anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS).
METHODS: This population-based cohort study, conducted from September 2021 to August 2023, used Finnish national registries of all live births in 1996-2014 (N = 1,097,753). Cox proportional hazards mode

PURPOSE: We utilized a population database to address the paucity of data around pregnancy outcomes in women with Down syndrome (DS).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using the Health Care Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample Database over 11 years, from 2004 to 2014. A delivery cohort was created using ICD-9 codes. ICD-9 code 758.0 was used to extract the cases of maternal DS. Pregnant women with DS (study group) were matched based on age, race, income, and health insurance type to women without DS (control) at a ratio of 1:20.
RESULTS: There were a total of 9

During the last decades, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) prevalence has been on the rise. While insulin remains the gold standard treatment for GDM, metformin use during pregnancy is controversial. This review aimed to comprehensively assess the available data on the efficacy and safety of metformin during pregnancy, both for the mother and the offspring. Metformin has been validated for maternal efficacy and safety, achieving comparable glycemic control with insulin. Additionally, it reduces maternal weight gain and possibly the occurrence of hypertensive disorders. During the early neona

Background Prenatal glucocorticoids are commonly used in pregnancies before 34 weeks of gestation in women at risk of preterm delivery; however, the effects of these drugs on late preterm infants (those born after the 34th week of pregnancy) are controversial. As a result, we aimed to investigate the effect of a single course of betamethasone (two doses of betamethasone every 24 hours) on the neonatal outcome of late preterm births. Methods We retrospectively assessed all spontaneous late preterm births (34-36+6 weeks of gestation) at a tertiary hospital in Iran over a period of two and a half

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia (CM) is characterized by changes in the first and second branchial arches. It is a clinical condition whose etiology is still uncertain, but studies have shown that genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors can result in disorders of blastogenesis of the branchial arches. This study evaluates gestational aspects, focusing on possible risk factors associated with CM.
METHODS: This is a case-control study conducted with patients monitored at a medical genetics service and compared to a control group of patients without evidence of malformations, born in

INTRODUCTION: Intermediate Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) are a group of inherited diseases that include phenylketonuria (PKU), tyrosinemia II (TSII), organic acidaemias and ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD), among others. They are increasingly more common in adults due to improved management. This has allowed more affected women to consider having children with good prospects. However, pregnancy may worsen metabolic control and/or increase maternal-fetal complications. The objective is to analyse the characteristics and outcomes of pregnancies of our patients with IEM.
METHODS:

During pregnancy, the fetoplacental unit is key in the pronounced physiological endocrine changes which support pregnancy, fetal development and survival, birth and lactation. In healthy women, pregnancy is characterized by changes in insulin sensitivity and increased maternal androgen levels. These are accompanied by a suite of mechanisms that support fetal growth, maintain glucose homeostasis and protect both mother and fetus from adverse effects of pregnancy induced insulin and androgen excess. In pregnancies affected by endocrine, metabolic disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS

BACKGROUND: Epicardial fat thickness (EFT) in adults and children has been related to the metabolic syndrome and other cardiovascular risk factors; however, scarce studies have evaluated it in infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) in whom, alterations in the thickness of the interventricular septum have been reported. This study compares the EFT in IDM versus infants of non-diabetic mothers (INDM) and its association with others echocardiographic parameters.
METHODS: We performed a cross sectional study in 93 infants (64 IDM and 29 INDM). To evaluate EFT dimensions, an echocardiogram was performe

CONTEXT: Early diagnosis and treatment of gestational diabetes (GDM) may reduce adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes, especially in high-risk women. However, there is a lack of data for other outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: We compared cardiometabolic and mental health outcomes in women with early (eGDM) and classical (cGDM) GDM.
METHODS: This prospective cohort included 1185 All women with cGDM and 76 women with eGDM. The eGDM group had GDM risk factors (BMI >30 kg/m2, family history of diabetes, history of GDM, ethnicity), were tested at <20 weeks gestational age, and diagnosed using American Diab

There is an increase in maternal metabolic burden due to the rise in pregnancies complicated by obesity, gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. Metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy is associated with increased risks of long-term morbidity and mortality for women and their offspring. Lifestyle interventions in pregnancy in women at risk of metabolic dysfunction have demonstrated short-term improvements such as reduced gestational weight gain and lowered risk of gestational diabetes. It is not known whether these interventions lead to sustained improvements in the
