Indications for intensive care unit treatment among neonates born to mothers with thyroid disease: A population-based cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid diseases in pregnancy are relatively common and are associated with adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes, increasing a neonate's risk of admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The aim of this study was to evaluate the indications for increased risk of NICU admission among the neonates of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid mothers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study data consisted of all singleton deliveries (n = 734 773) between 2004 and 2016 in Finland collected from the Finnish Medical Birth Register. The odds of NICU admission (with 95% confidence intervals)

Selinexor assists vorinostat in inhibiting HDAC activity via promoting the accumulation of maspin in the nucleus of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma cells.

AIM: Low birth weight may predispose to later insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia, but the pathophysiological mechanisms are unclear. The perinatal endocrine situation may play an important role, but has been little studied. Children of mothers with diabetes during pregnancy are an important risk population for later insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia. We therefore examined relationships between birth weight, insulin and insulin resistance at birth, and insulin secretion and insulin resistance in infancy in these children. METHODS: We studied 104 infants of mothers with Type 1 diab

Longitudinal associations of modifiable risk factors in the first 1000 days with weight status and metabolic risk in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have identified early-life risk factors for childhood overweight/obesity (OwOb), but few have evaluated how they combine to influence later cardiometabolic health. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the association of risk factors in the first 1000 d with adiposity and cardiometabolic risk in early adolescence. METHODS: We studied 1038 mother-child pairs in Project Viva. We chose 6 modifiable early-life risk factors previously associated with child adiposity or metabolic health in the cohort: smoking during pregnancy (yes compared with no); gestational weight gain (exce

Maternal and neonatal outcome and children's development after medically assisted reproduction with in-vitro matured oocytes-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: IVM was implemented in medically assisted reproduction 25 years ago. IVM does not involve controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) and is mainly indicated in patients with a high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, in particular in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); it is also an acknowledged option in fertility protection. However, the in-vitro culture of immature oocytes raises concerns over their developmental potential and the putative impact on children's health. Although an increasing number of studies on obstetric and neonatal outcomes of IVM children and the

Research progress of metformin in gestational diabetes mellitus: a narrative review.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to abnormal glucose metabolism that occurs during pregnancy, where blood glucose does not reach the level of overt diabetes during pregnancy. Poor blood glucose control in GDM patients can pose a serious threat to pregnant women and their fetuses by giving rise to adverse pregnancy outcomes for mothers and infants. In 2015, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) recommended that insulin and metformin be used as the first-line medications for patients with GDM who did not reach the ideal blood glucose level following lifestyle

Molecular Mechanisms of Maternal Diabetes Effects on Fetal and Neonatal Surfactant.

Respiratory distress is a significant contributor to newborn morbidity and mortality. An association between infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs) and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) has been well recognized for decades. As obesity and diabetes prevalence have increased over the past several decades, more women are overweight and diabetic in the first trimester, and many more pregnant women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Glycemic control during pregnancy can be challenging due to the maternal need for higher caloric intake and higher insulin resistance. Surfactant is a complex molec

How to avoid unnecessary surgical treatment for neonatal small left colon syndrome.

We report a case of neonatal small left colon syndrome (NSLCS) that underwent surgery. A female infant was born at 38 weeks of gestation. The mother had gestational diabetes requiring insulin therapy. The baby was admitted for respiratory distress. Abdominal distension was observed, and the gastric residue increased. Contrast enema revealed a small caliber of the left colon up to the splenic flexure. At 14 days, the full-thickness biopsy of the sigmoid and transverse colons was performed. Pathological diagnosis showed that the sigmoid colon had few ganglion cells, therefore the transverse colo

Are newborn outcomes different for term babies who were exposed to antenatal corticosteroids?

BACKGROUND: Antenatal corticosteroids improve newborn outcomes for preterm infants. However, predicting which women presenting for threatened preterm labor will have preterm infants is inaccurate, and many women receive antenatal corticosteroids but then go on to deliver at term. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the short-term outcomes of infants born at term to women who received betamethasone for threatened preterm labor with infants who were not exposed to betamethasone in utero. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study of infants born at or after 37 weeks' gestationa

Metabolic Conditions Including Obesity, Diabetes, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Implications for Breastfeeding and Breastmilk Composition.

Breastfeeding is internationally recognized as the recommended standard for infant nutrition, informed by evidence of its multiple benefits for both mother and baby. In the context of common metabolic conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, diabetes (type 1, type 2, and gestational), and obesity, breastfeeding may be particularly beneficial for both mother and infant. However, there is evidence of delayed lactogenesis and reduced breastfeeding rates and duration in women with these conditions, and the effects of altered maternal metabolic environments on breastmilk composition (and poten

Inositols: From Established Knowledge to Novel Approaches.

Myo-inositol (myo-Ins) and D-chiro-inositol (D-chiro-Ins) are natural compounds involved in many biological pathways. Since the discovery of their involvement in endocrine signal transduction, myo-Ins and D-chiro-Ins supplementation has contributed to clinical approaches in ameliorating many gynecological and endocrinological diseases. Currently both myo-Ins and D-chiro-Ins are well-tolerated, effective alternative candidates to the classical insulin sensitizers, and are useful treatments in preventing and treating metabolic and reproductive disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS),

Imaging Review of Obstetric Sequelae of Maternal Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus, whether preexisting or gestational, poses significant risk to both the mother and the developing fetus. A myriad of potential fetal complications in the setting of diabetic pregnancies include, among others, congenital anomalies, delayed fetal lung maturity, macrosomia, and increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Congenital anomalies most commonly involve the nervous, cardiovascular, genitourinary, and musculoskeletal systems. Delayed fetal lung maturity, probably secondary to hyperglycemia suppressing surfactant secretion, is a major determinant of perinatal morbidity

Neonatal Birthweight, Infant Feeding, and Childhood Metabolic Markers.

OBJECTIVE: Antenatal and early neonatal nutritional environment may influence later metabolic health. Infants of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have higher risk for childhood obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Leptin and adiponectin are known biomarkers for MetS and may guide interventions to reduce later obesity. We sought to examine the relationship between birthweight, early infancy feeding practices, and biomarkers for MetS in offspring of women with mild GDM. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a prospective observational follow-up study on the offspring of women wh

A versatile system to record cell-cell interactions.

Cell-cell interactions influence all aspects of development, homeostasis, and disease. In cancer, interactions between cancer cells and stromal cells play a major role in nearly every step of carcinogenesis. Thus, the ability to record cell-cell interactions would facilitate mechanistic delineation of the role of the cancer microenvironment. Here, we describe GFP-based Touching Nexus (G-baToN) which relies upon nanobody-directed fluorescent protein transfer to enable sensitive and specific labeling of cells after cell-cell interactions. G-baToN is a generalizable system that enables physical c
