BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome during pregnancy is rare with limited evidence; management must be tailored to safeguard both mother and fetus.
CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes presented with acute coronary syndrome at 11+3 weeks' gestation. She underwent intracoronary imaging-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (3.0- × 28-mm stent, mean external elastic lamina diameter: 3.07 mm, lesion length: 28 mm) under minimal radiation (estimated fetal dose: ≈0.00004 mGy). After optimal stent implantation, 6 weeks of dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopid

PURPOSE: The effect of Mendelian disorders on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes is poorly understood because of their rarity and the challenge of compiling complete prenatal and postnatal records.
METHODS: Using electronic health records from a single academic center, we developed a retrospective cohort of maternal-infant dyads. Cases were mothers with molecularly confirmed Mendelian disorders paired with live-born infants; controls had no documented genetic disease. Outcomes were evaluated overall, by organ system, and by individual disorder.
RESULTS: The cohort included 58,912 dyads, 241 wit

Introduction Monogenic neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) is a rare form of diabetes, presenting within the first six months of life and caused by pathogenic variants affecting pancreatic β-cell development or function. Because its initial presentation may overlap with type 1 diabetes, molecular diagnosis is crucial, as it directly influences prognosis and treatment - particularly the potential responsiveness to sulfonylureas in ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP)-channel-related NDM. This study reports a retrospective descriptive case series and aims to characterize the clinical and genetic features

INTRODUCTION: β-Blockers are an essential treatment for cardiovascular disease, the incidence of which is rising among women of childbearing age. Several large cohort and registry studies have reported an association between β-blocker exposure in pregnancy and reduced birth weight, but most have included women with hypertension or structural heart disease. Our study's primary objective was to evaluate the impact of these medications on the birth weight of infants born to mothers with morphologically normal hearts, including women with long QT syndrome (LQTS) or Marfan syndrome (MFS). Secondary

BACKGROUND: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) face breastfeeding challenges. We aimed to compare exclusive breastfeeding rates in women with PCOS to those in a population-based cohort, and to explore the effect of metformin and metabolic factors on exclusive breastfeeding in women with PCOS. METHODS: This cohort study included 653 women from the pilot, PregMet, and PregMet2 randomized trials on metformin in pregnant women with PCOS (2000–2017), and 63,927 women from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) (1999–2008) as the reference group. BACKGROUND/AIM: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) remains a significant cause of morbidity, particularly in infants of diabetic mothers. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive accuracy of non-invasive prenatal ultrasound parameters-Fetal Lung Volume (FLV) and Pulmonary Artery Resistance Index (PA-RI)-for anticipating RDS in this high-risk population.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital over 18 months. 123 pregnant women with Diabetes scheduled for elective cesarean delivery were enrolled. Within 72 h of p

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) independently influence foetal growth, but their combined impact remains poorly characterised. This study examined the individual and joint associations of PMOS and GDM with neonatal anthropometry in a large, multi-ethnic population.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of 9454 singleton pregnancies from the Born in Bradford (BiB) cohort (UK, 2007-2011). Women were classified into four groups: (1) normoglycemic non-PMOS controls, (2) PMOS only, (3) GDM only and (4) PMOS + GDM. GDM was def

Development of ectodermal tissues in humans is a complex process regulated by interacting signaling pathways. This review adopts an evolutionary medicine framework to examine how genetic variation in components of the ectodysplasin A (EDA) signaling pathway may have conferred human evolutionary fitness during the last ice age, but today may present an evolutionary mismatch, contributing to modern chronic diseases. A missense substitution at amino acid 370 in the human EDA receptor (EDAR) gene (EDARV370A), which is very common in East Asian, Native American, and Latino populations, produces ple

The first 1000 days of life, spanning from conception to the end of the second postnatal year, represent a critical developmental window during which environmental and metabolic exposures exert long-lasting effects on offspring health. Among these exposures, maternal and early-life hyperglycemia have emerged as major determinants of metabolic programming and future cardiometabolic disease risk. Increasing evidence suggests that hyperglycemic exposure during this vulnerable period induces complex alterations in placental function, fetal endocrine adaptation, epigenetic regulation, and postnatal

IMPORTANCE: Infant milk feeding type (eg, human milk vs formula) and infant gut microbes have each been associated with differences in microbial metabolites and childhood blood pressure; however, evidence remains limited regarding how specific infant gut microbes, at a species or strain level, in combination with milk feeding type, shape microbial metabolites and blood pressure.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether human milk feeding and infant gut microbes, including Bifidobacterium longum subsp infantis (B infantis) and other milk-degrading microbes, are associated with infant fecal metabolite

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common anatomical malformation occurring in live-born infants and an increasing cause of morbidity and mortality all over the world. Population-based observations have described associations between maternal cardiometabolic disorders and the risk of CHD in offspring. The present article is a narrative review. The aim of this study was to review the epidemiological evidence and clinical observations relating maternal obesity and diabetes mellitus to the risk of CHD in offspring, with particular attention paid to first trimester disturbances of fetal ca

Background Congenital anomalies are a public health concern and the leading cause of infant mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Established risk factors include pregestational diabetes, maternal obesity, folic acid deficiency, and limited access to prenatal care. The aim of this exploratory study was to describe maternal characteristics in relation to isolated and multiple non-syndromic congenital anomalies in a series of cases from a secondary-care hospital in Puebla, Mexico. INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder associated with increased obstetric complications. However, its impact on the neurodevelopment of preterm neonates remains underexplored, particularly in low-resource settings. The study aimed to assess the association between maternal PCOS and the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in preterm neonates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted at Azadi Teaching Hospital, Kirkuk, Iraq, from June 2023 to June 2025. A total of 200 women with preterm labor were enrolled and divided into two

Cushing's syndrome (CS) is a rare condition encountered in pregnancy, and Cushing's disease (pituitary-dependent CS) represents an even smaller subset. The occurrence of pregnancy in women with CS is uncommon because hypercortisolism suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, frequently leading to anovulation and infertility. When conception does occur, Cushing's disease can significantly complicate the course of pregnancy, posing serious risks to both the mother and fetus. Reported maternal complications include hypertension, gestational diabetes mellitus, pre-eclampsia, heart failur

INTRODUCTION: Available work from North America indicates that same-sex attracted (SSA) individuals enjoy aspects of rural life but nonetheless report encountering homophobia and experiencing isolation from SSA networks. The experience of prejudice and social isolation are often associated with psycho-social distress among the general population of same-sex attracted individuals. Little is known of how SSA women experience life in rural areas of Australia and how this influences their psycho-social wellbeing.
METHODS: This was a small-scale qualitative study using guided interviews to explore

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Breastfeeding is the best way to provide newborns with crucial nutrients and produce a unique bond between mother and child. Breast milk is rich in nutritious and non-nutritive bioactive components, such as immune cells, cytokines, chemokines, immunoglobulins, hormones, fatty acids, and other constituents. Maternal effects during gestation and lactation can alter these components, influencing offspring outcomes. Chronic inflammatory maternal conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, impact breast milk composition. Breast milk from obese mothers exhibits changes in fat content, c
