A putative adverse outcome network for neonatal mortality and lower birth weight in rodents: Applicability to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and relevance to human health.

BACKGROUND: Some per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) cause neonatal mortality and lower birth weight in rodents. We constructed an Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) network for neonatal mortality and lower birth weight in rodents, comprising three putative AOPs. We then assessed strengths of the evidence for the AOPs and applicability to PFAS. Finally, we considered the relevance of this AOP network to human health. METHODS: Literature searches targeted PFAS, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists, other nuclear receptors, relevant tissues, and developmental targets. W

Understanding what patients and physicians need to improve their decision-making about antenatal corticosteroids in late preterm gestation: a qualitative framework analysis.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the benefits of administration of antenatal corticosteroids in late preterm gestation outweigh its harms. We sought to understand whether patients and physicians need increased support to decide whether to administer antenatal corticosteroids in late preterm gestation, and their informational needs and preferences for decision-making roles related to this intervention; we also wanted to know if creation of a decision-support tool would be useful. METHODS: We conducted individual, semistructured interviews with pregnant people, obstetricians and pediatricians

Associations Between Autism Spectrum Quotient and Integration of Visual Stimuli in 9-year-old Children: Preliminary Evidence of Sex Differences.

PURPOSE: The dorsal stream vulnerability hypothesis posits that the dorsal stream, responsible for visual motion and visuo-motor processing, may be particularly vulnerable during neurodevelopment. Consistent with this, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been associated with deficits in global motion integration, though deficits in ventral stream tasks, such as form identification, have also been reported. In the current study, we examined whether a similar pattern of results is found in a cohort of 381 children born with neurodevelopmental risk factors and exhibiting a wide spectrum of caregiv

Neonatal hypoglycemia: lack of evidence for a safe management.

Neonatal hypoglycemia affects up to 15% of all newborns. Despite the high prevalence there is no uniform definition of neonatal hypoglycemia, and existing guidelines differ significantly in terms of when and whom to screen for hypoglycemia, and where to set interventional thresholds and treatment goals. In this review, we discuss the difficulties to define hypoglycemia in neonates. Existing knowledge on different strategies to approach this problem will be reviewed with a focus on long-term neurodevelopmental outcome studies and results of interventional trials. Furthermore, we compare existin

Fulminant Neonatal Liver Failure in MPV 17-Related Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome.

Mitochondrial depletion syndromes are well established causes of liver failure in infants. Hepatocerebral variant related to MPV17 gene defect is characterized by infantile onset of progressive liver failure, developmental delay, neurological manifestations, lactic acidosis, hypoglycemia, and mtDNA depletion in liver tissue. We report a hepatocerebral variant of mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome in a neonate who presented with septic shock picture, hypoglycemia, jaundice, hypotonia, and rotatory nystagmus. Family history was significant for consanguinity and a brother who died at the age of

Neonatal outcomes and rationale for timing of birth in perinatal diabetes: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends delivery in the 39th week of pregnancy for patients with pregestational and medication-controlled gestational diabetes with consideration for earlier delivery among those with poor glucose control. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the impact of birth before 39 weeks' gestation exclusively for diabetes-related indications on neonatal outcomes and clinician rationale for these recommendations. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of all singleton, nonanomalous pregnancies complicated by diabetes. Pati

Nursing Intervention and Summary of Evidence Pertaining to Neonatal Recurrent Hypoglycemia Induced by Terbutaline.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypoglycemia (NH) is a common clinical symptom that can occur in both normal and critically ill neonates. The placenta is the site of material exchange between the mother and the fetus, a special organ shared by the mother and the fetus during pregnancy, and one of its important functions is to transfer nutrients from the mother to the fetus. Terbutaline is used to relax frequent uterine contractions before delivery, and it can penetrate the placental barrier and affect the normal decomposition of neonatal glycogen. The situation is neonatal hypoglycemia if not timely dete

Neonatal Glycogen Storage Disease Type IA: A Rare Presentation.

Glucose homeostasis is essential for energy production and the central nervous system function, depending on glycogen metabolism. Glycogen storage diseases (GSD) are caused by enzymatic defects of the glycogen degradation and mainly involve the liver since the inhibition of hepatic glycogen breakdown results in its excessive storage and hepatomegaly. Other findings are hypoglycemia and hyperlactatemia and consequent neurological symptoms. GSD Type Ia is a severe disease with clinical manifestations usually occurring in the first months. Morbidity and mortality are high, when not treated. The p

Skin-to-skin contact for the prevention of neonatal hypoglycaemia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant after birth is recommended to promote breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding. However, its impact on the incidence of neonatal hypoglycaemia is unknown. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess this. METHODS: Published randomised control trials (RCTs), quasi-RCTs, non-randomised studies of interventions, cohort, or case-control studies with an intervention of skin-to-skin care compared to other treatment were included without language or date restrictions. The primary outcome was neonatal hypoglycaemia (study-de
