Foliar Application of MgO Nanoparticles Modulates Magnesium Nutrition and Fruit Quality in Loquat Under Mg-Deficient Conditions.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is common in acidic orchard soils and can limit fruit crop growth and quality. This study evaluated whether foliar-applied magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) could improve Mg nutrition and fruit quality in 'Ninghaibai' loquat grown under Mg-deficient acidic soil conditions. Pot and field experiments were conducted using water as the control and MgSO4-50eq as an equimolar Mg comparator. MgO NPs showed a concentration-dependent effect, and 200 mg/L produced the best overall performance among the tested concentrations. At this concentration, total biomass increased

Role of an Angiotensin II Type-1 Receptor (AT1R) Antagonist and Mg2+ Supplementation on the Levels of NOX in Plasma and Kidney Homogenates, Lipid Peroxidation, and Osmotic Fragility of Red Blood Cells in Dahl Rats Fed a High Sodium Diet.

Mg²⁺ deficiency has been linked to oxidative stress, inflammation, and hypertension. We have previously shown that Losartan increases plasma Mg²⁺ levels in Dahl salt-sensitive (Dahl) rats, suggesting that defective Mg²⁺ metabolism in this strain contributes to hypertension. Here, we investigated the effects of dietary Mg²⁺ supplementation (0.3% MgO) and/or Losartan (10 mg/kg/day, in drinking water) in male Dahl rats fed a high-NaCl (8%) or standard Na⁺ diet for six weeks. Six-week-old rats were randomly assigned to eight experimental groups. NO metabolites (nitrites and nitrates) were measured

Bidirectional association between zinc and liver cirrhosis: evidence from mendelian randomization and clinical validation.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether low blood zinc levels in cirrhosis patients are a cause or a consequence of the disease. METHODS: Seven blood metals (calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, selenium, zinc) were assessed using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). We performed reverse MR analysis on the positive results and subsequently evaluated the zinc findings in a cohort of 137 cirrhosis patients. RESULTS: MR analysis revealed that higher genetically predicted zinc levels were associated with an increased cirrhosis risk (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = [1.04, 1.46], p = 0.014). No si

Early-stage diagnosis of nutrient deficiency by chlorophyll fluorescence in maize.

Rapid, non-destructive phenotyping is vital for early nutrient deficiency detection in plant research and agriculture. Nitrogen (N) and magnesium (Mg) deficiency are hard to distinguish with instruments measuring only chlorophyll content since both deficiencies lead to loss of chlorophyll. This study evaluated the suitability of a commercially available dual-excitation fluorescence sensor (measuring chlorophyll (Chl) and epidermal UV absorbing compounds) for identifying nutrient deficiencies in maize seedlings. Both N and Mg deficiencies in maize seedlings caused a decrease in the Chl index an

Enhancement of Morpho-Physiological, Physiological, and Antioxidant Capacity of Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) Under Water Deficit Using ZnO Nanoparticles and Magnesium Sulfate: Implications for Saffron Yield.

Water deficit stress is one of the main plant growth and productivity limitation factors. In current study, the Crocus sativus plants were exposed to three irrigation regimes (FC 100%, FC 75%, and FC 25%) combined with ZnO-NPs (0, 25, and 50 mg L-1) and MgSO4 (0, 1.5, and 3 g L-1). Growth, flowering, physiological, and biochemical characteristics were evaluated in a split-plot experiment based on randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates during 2023-2024. The results demonstrated that severe drought stress markedly reduced leaf dry weight, flower weight, flower number, stig

Genome-wide characterization of the tomato SlMGR gene family and the biological function of SlMGR10 in bacteria and Arabidopsis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Magnesium is an essential mineral nutrient with numerous physiological roles in plant growth and development. However, the mechanisms of Mg2+ transport in Solanum lycopersicum remain largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, we performed the characterization of the Magnesium Release family genes (SlMGRs) in tomato. The conserved evolutionary relationship and expression pattern of SlMGR genes, and the subcellular localization and Mg2+ transport activity of SlMGR proteins, were investigated. KEY RESULTS: A total of ten SlMGR proteins were identified. They were divided into

Integrative Multi-Omics Analysis Reveals Systemic Transcriptional and Hormonal Reprogramming Associated with a Rice Yellow-Green Leaf Mutant.

Leaf-color mutants are crucial for elucidating chlorophyll metabolism mechanisms. Here, we identified yel, a stably inherited rice mutant with a dwarf and yellow-green leaf phenotype controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene. Using BSA-seq, we mapped the candidate causal gene to OsMPEC, encoding a magnesium protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase with a G→T substitution. Multi-omics analysis revealed that the functional deficiency of OsMPEC protein-despite unchanged transcript levels-triggers global transcriptional repression of the chlorophyll metabolic network. This defect caused dist

The lithium-magnesium-zinc axis under stress: regulation of N-glycosylation-linked proteostasis and Alzheimer's disease.

Inflammation resulting from the unfolded protein response to glycosylation dysfunction may be the key driver in the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Stress increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease, in part, by depleting essential cofactors required by enzymes involved in N-glycosylation (the first and third, second, fourth, and fifth enzymes-essential cofactors required for dolichol diphosphate-sugar conjugate synthesis are, respectively: DHRSX-NAD/NADPH, SRD5A3-NADPH, DOLK-Zn2+, and DPAGT1-Mg2+). Lithium reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease by: (1) increasing transcription of DPAGT1, t

Letter to the Editor: Magnesium supplementation in sepsis: A promising metabolic resuscitation strategy.

Sepsis remains a major cause of mortality worldwide despite advances in modern critical care. Elevated serum lactate is a key marker of metabolic dysfunction and is strongly associated with adverse outcomes of sepsis. Magnesium plays a crucial role in mitochondrial function, energy production, and cellular metabolism, and its deficiency is frequently observed in critically ill patients with reduced lactate clearance. The recent randomized controlled trial by Anbarasan et al published in World Journal of Critical Care Medicine provided an important evidence that magnesium supplementation enhanc

Comparative effects of chemical and PGPR-based biostimulants on growth, mineral uptake, and biochemical responses of Rosmarinus officinalis under drought stress.

BACKGROUND: Rosmarinus officinalis is a medicinal and aromatic plant valued for its high levels of phenolics, flavonoids, and essential oils. However, drought stress can negatively affect plant growth, nutrient uptake, and the accumulation of bioactive compounds. Since biostimulants are increasingly used to mitigate the adverse effects of water deficiency and improve plant performance, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of different drought levels and selected biostimulants on the growth, mineral nutrition, physiological characteristics, and phytochemical composition of rosemary. Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals Conserved and Nutrient-Specific Responses to Nutrient Deficiencies in Quinoa.

Nutrient deficiency is a major constraint on crop productivity, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation to different essential nutrient deficiencies remain poorly understood in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.). We performed the first comparative transcriptomic analysis of quinoa responses to deficiencies of twelve essential macro- and micronutrients across leaf and root tissues, generating 104 RNA-sequencing libraries analyzed using differential expression, multivariate, co-expression network, and pathway enrichment approaches. Nutrient deficiencies differed substantially in the m

[A case report of primary hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia caused by TRPM6 gene variants].

A 26-day-old male infant presented with recurrent convulsions from 18 days of life. Laboratory investigations revealed severe hypomagnesemia (0.07 mmol/L) and hypocalcemia (1.65 mmol/L). Whole-exome sequencing was performed and identified compound heterozygous pathogenic variants in the TRPM6 gene, comprising c.5616G>A (p.Trp1872Ter) and a deletion of exons 20-23. The c.5616G>A variant was inherited from the father, and the exon 20-23 deletion was inherited from the mother; neither variant has been previously reported. Based on these findings, the diagnosis of primary hypomagnesemia with secon

Persistent Neonatal Hypocalcemia as an Early Clue to TCIRG1-Related Infantile Osteopetrosis in an Infant of a Diabetic Mother: A Case Report.

Infantile malignant osteopetrosis is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal disorder caused by impaired osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, resulting in diffuse osteosclerosis, bone marrow failure, neurologic complications, and metabolic disturbances. Early diagnosis remains challenging, particularly when initial manifestations overlap with common neonatal conditions. Persistent neonatal hypocalcemia may be an early but underrecognized clue. We report a Saudi male infant with genetically confirmed TCIRG1-associated osteopetrosis who presented with persistent neonatal hypocalcemia and secondary h

Targeted removal of soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 in very preterm preeclampsia: a pilot trial.

Soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1), a protein secreted by the placenta, plays a central role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia-a life-threatening pregnancy complication for which no disease-specific treatment currently exists. We developed a strategy to selectively deplete circulating sFlt-1 and then conducted a single-arm, open-label trial to reduce circulating sFlt-1 in women with very preterm preeclampsia. The primary endpoints were safety and tolerability. Extracorporeal apheresis with an adsorber containing high-affinity IgG1 antibodies against sFlt-1 resulted in an approximate

Paracellular transport along the nephron in physiology and pathophysiology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tight junctions formed by claudins regulate paracellular permeability to sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, and water along the nephron, thereby enabling energy-efficient reabsorption of glomerular filtrate that limits tubular oxygen consumption. RECENT FINDINGS: We review evidence from knockout models, cell lines, and single-cell analyses demonstrating highly segment-specific claudin functions along the nephron. In the proximal tubule, independent claudin-2 and claudin-10a pores mediate cation/water and anion permeability, respectively, and inducible claudin-2 deletion

Magnesium and blood pressure regulation: systemic and renal mechanisms.

Experimental and clinical evidence have demonstrated that Mg deficiency contributes to elevated blood pressure (BP), whereas Mg supplementation exerts modest but consistent antihypertensive effects. The systemic effects of Mg supplementation and/or deficiency on BP have been investigated in relation to vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), endothelial function, the sympathetic nervous system, and inflammation associated with oxidative stress. Some of these mechanisms are supported by compelling evidence, whereas others remain controversial. In t
