Successful treatment of probable disseminated mucormycosis using liposomal amphotericin B and isavuconazole in myelodysplastic syndrome: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare, aggressive, and life-threatening fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals and is associated with a high mortality rate. CASE PRESENTATION: We treated a 72-year-old woman with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) who developed disseminated mucormycosis involving the lungs, skin, and central nervous system (CNS). Diagnosis was supported by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), and she received combination antifungal therapy with liposomal amphotericin B and isavuconazole. Her clinical status stabilized after 4 weeks of trea

Mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive, invasive fungal infection that affects patients who are severely immunocompromised, as well as patients with diabetes and persons with immunocompetence who have major trauma. Mucormycosis manifests in several clinical forms, including sino-orbital, rhinocerebral, sinopulmonary, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, musculoskeletal, osteoarticular, and disseminated mucormycosis, as well as single-organ disease. Although mucormycosis is often lethal, early intervention reduces mortality. Successful treatment depends on early detection and staging of the disease, tim

Symbiont in circulation: Mycetohabitans endofungorum bacteremia heralding invasive mucormycosis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial endosymbionts contribute to Mucorales virulence but are rarely recognized in human infection. We describe the first clinically characterized case of Mycetohabitans endofungorum isolated from blood preceding disseminated mucormycosis. CASE: A 47-year-old immunocompetent man developed fulminant hepatitis. During pre-transplant evaluation, imaging revealed pulmonary nodules and a thoracic aortic mycotic aneurysm. Blood cultures grew an unidentifiable gram-negative coccobacillus with Vibrio-like morphology. Bronchoalveolar lavage and induced sputum cultures grew Rhizopus spe

Rapidly Progressive Mucormycosis Presenting as Giant Cell Arteritis as a First Presentation of Diabetes in a Woman With Diabetic Ketoacidosis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated mucormycosis is a rare, angioinvasive fungal infection predominantly affecting immunocompromised individuals, especially those with poorly controlled diabetes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old Palestinian woman presented with sudden unilateral blindness, ophthalmoplegia, facial numbness, and ptosis, with hyperglycemia. Early brain MRI/MRA/MRV findings were normal, suggesting that giant cell arteritis, or other autoimmune vasculitis, was suspected; thus, IV steroids were administered. Subsequently, her condition progressed to bilateral fixed pupils, complete ophthalmop

Can Patients with Hematologic Disease and Prior Mucormycosis Undergo Stem Cell Transplantation?

The prognosis of mucormycosis after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is generally poor but data on post-HSCT outcomes in patients with pre-HSCT mucormycosis are limited. We reviewed patients with documented mucormycosis at MD Anderson Cancer Center (2008-2024) and identified five patients who subsequently underwent HSCT. A literature review identified 24 additional such cases. Most patients had acute myeloid leukemia (69%). The most common site of mucormycosis was pulmonary (59%), while 31% had disseminated mucormycosis. All patients received antifungals and 76% had surgery prior

Disseminated Mucormycosis and monoclonal gammopathy in a young sarcoidosis patient following COVID-19: A rare case report.

Disseminated mucormycosis is a rare but highly fatal invasive fungal infection, typically occurring in immunocompromised hosts. We report a case of culture- and PCR-confirmed disseminated mucormycosis in a previously healthy 25-year-old male who developed sarcoidosis and IgG-kappa monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance after contracting COVID-19. The patient presented with progressive respiratory symptoms and later developed multi-organ involvement, including the lungs, brain, kidneys, eyes, heart, lymph nodes, prostate, and vocal cords. Histopathological examination of renal biops

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing enables early detection and outcome improvement in perioperative mucormycosis after liver transplantation: A single-center experience.

OBJECTIVES: Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive and highly lethal fungal infection in liver transplant recipients, with early diagnosis remaining a major challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for early detection and management of perioperative mucormycosis in adult liver transplant patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 539 adult patients who underwent liver transplantation between June 2022 and August 2025 at a single tertiary center. Nine patients with clinically confirmed perioperative mucormyco

Case Report: Extremely elevated ascitic fluid amylase as a diagnostic clue for peritoneal mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus following exertional heatstroke.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening fungal infection that typically affects immunocompromised hosts. Disseminated peritoneal mucormycosis is extremely rare and often diagnosed late. Heatstroke is an under-recognized predisposing condition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old male brickworker developed peritoneal mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus following exertional heatstroke. On day 11 after heatstroke, he developed massive ascites. Ascitic fluid amylase was markedly elevated to 51,808 U/L, while plasma amylase remained low (40.3 U/L). Contrast study e

Case Report: Immune checkpoint inhibitor exhibits dual benefits for a refractory lymphoma patient with disseminated mucormycosis.

Invasive mucormycosis contributes to a high mortality rate in patients with hematological malignancies. When it disseminates to multiple organs, especially to the brain, the prognosis is extremely poor. The traditional antifungal strategies including surgery have less efficacy in patients with hematological malignancies. Here, we describe a case report of a 62-year-old man with refractory lymphoma who developed mucormycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus after chemotherapy, which disseminated extensively to the lungs, diaphragm, brain and spleen. He was successfully treated with antifungal agen

Disseminated Lichtheimia ramosa infection in a Japanese Black calf.

A female Japanese Black calf with diarrhea and fever was treated unsuccessfully with multiple antibiotics (oxytetracycline, fluorinated quinolones, tylosin, penicillin) and glucocorticoids. Without expecting recovery, the calf was euthanized. On post-mortem examination, the calf had thymus hypoplasia and disseminated mucormycosis with lesions in the liver and gastrointestinal tract. Histologically, multifocal granulomatous lesions with fungal hyphae were detected in the liver and submucosal tissues in the gastrointestinal tract. Lichtheimia ramosa was isolated from the liver. Immunosuppression

Disseminated mucormycosis leading to a fatal gastrointestinal perforation in a pediatric case of EBV-associated Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

Disseminated mucormycosis is a rare and often fatal infection, primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals. Its diagnosis is extremely challenging, as definitive identification of organisms in tissue by histopathology with culture confirmation can be invasive, slow, and insensitive. We present the case of a 12-month-old female with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), triggered by a high Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) viral load and complicated by an underlying NK-cell perforin deficiency. Despite rapid HLH-specific and maximal supportive care, the patient developed life-threatening mucor

Rapidly Fatal Pulmonary Mucormycosis With Pericardial Dissemination: A Case Report and Imaging Insights.

Mucormycosis is a rare but aggressive opportunistic fungal infection, predominantly affecting immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of a 59-year-old male with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia undergoing chemotherapy who developed pulmonary mucormycosis, which rapidly progressed to disseminated disease with pericardial involvement, an exceptionally rare occurrence. Initial chest CT imaging showed a subtle perihilar infiltrate, but within days, extensive spread was evident, showing widespread pulmonary consolidation, ground-glass opacities, vascular thrombosis, mediastinal invasi

A Fatal Case of Disseminated Mucormycosis in a Patient Shortly after Starting Treatment against Malignant Lymphoma.

Disseminated mucormycosis is a fatal infection commonly observed in patients with prolonged neutropenia, such as those undergoing treatment for hematological malignancies or post-transplantation. This report describes a case of malignant lymphoma in a patient with no history of cytotoxic chemotherapy. The patient died early, and disseminated mucormycosis was identified during an autopsy. Notably, no imaging findings were suggestive of mucormycosis, which complicated the diagnosis. Given that both mucormycosis and malignant lymphoma were suspected from the initial presentation, it is important
