Mucormycosis is a rare, opportunistic infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales, class Zygomycetes. These fungi produce fatal opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, especially in those with severe neutropenia. Recently, mucormycosis has become more widespread, because potent, myelosuppressive chemotherapies are performed more often than before. Nevertheless, this infection rarely occurs in patients with solid malignancies. Here, we describe an autopsy case of disseminated mucormycosis in a neutropenic patient who was receiving chemotherapy for an underlying solid malign

We describe two cases of disseminated mucormycosis following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Both patients were suffering from chronic graft-ver-sus-host disease (GVHD) and treated with prolonged administration of corticosteroid. In both cases, the initial symptoms were high fever and left flank pain. Involved organs were the spleen, right kidney and the right lung in one case, and the spleen and the brain in the other. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathology after splenectomy. One patient, in whom the immunosuppressants could be discontinued, was treated with prolonged conventi

A case of angioinvasive cutaneous mucormycosis in a premature infant, eventually requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy, is described. The fungal infection began at the site of a brachial artery catheter that had been covered with an adhesive dressing in the left antecubital fossa. The infection progressed rapidly over a 5-day period, and a left arm amputation was required. Fungal hyphae were present at the margins of resection. The patient eventually had disseminated mucormycosis and died. A second case of cutaneous mucormycosis in another premature infant also is presented. Th

Mucormycosis is an uncommon and frequently fatal fungal infection. It characteristically affects patients with diabetes mellitus or patients with severe immunosuppression. The hallmark of mucormycosis infection is tissue infarction and vascular invasion. We present clinical data and imaging studies of a 16 year-old child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia complicated by disseminated mucormycosis resulting in a pseudoaneurysm of the spleen. This was successfully managed by a combination of systemic antifungal therapy (Amphotericin B) and surgery (splenectomy). This entity has not been described

A case of disseminated infection due to Saksenaea vasiformis in a previously well adult male is presented. The clinical presentation was that of septic shock with a distinctive rash. At postmortem, endocarditis and widespread dissemination were evident.

An 18-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because of subcutaneous hematoma and fever of unknown origin. Acute myeloid leukemia was diagnosed and empirical antimicrobial treatment and induction chemotherapy were started. After initial defervescence, fever relapsed 2 days after the onset of neutropenia. The CT scan of the lung was consistent with an invasive fungal infection. Treatment with amphotericin B was started and antimicrobial treatment was continued with liposomal amphotericin B because of an increase in creatinine later. The fever persisted and the patient suddenly developed progre

Mucormycosis is a rare often fatal opportunistic condition. It mainly occurs in immunocompromised subjects but rarely in AIDS patients. An eighteen-year-old HIV+ man from Zaire died rapidly from disseminated mucormycosis with pulmonary, cardiac, renal, hepatic, splenic and gastric involvement. Fungi were observed in all these organs with a particular vascular trophism. Rhizopus orizae was identified on cultures. Rapid microscopic diagnosis, in the localized stage, could improve the poor prognosis of this infection.

Two cases of disseminated mucormycosis in patients with underlying hematological disease are described. Both patients presented with fever and pulmonary infiltrates which did not respond to empirical treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics and antifungal agents, and in both patients there was rapid progression with a fatal outcome. All cultures were negative and the diagnosis was made postmortem. A review of the literature revealed only three recent reports of successful treatment of disseminated mucormycosis. Survival correlated with control of the underlying disease and early diagnosis bas

A rare case of disseminated mucormycosis occurred in a 3-year-old boy suffering from a 4th degree neuroblastoma, treated with chemiotherapy and broad-spectrum antibiotics is reported. The child was admitted in the pediatric intensive care unit after surgical debridement of a wide part of the bowel showing necrosis and vessel thrombosis. After the histological diagnosis of mucormycosis in the gastrointestinal tract and the echographic detection of multiple mycotic localizations in the liver and kidneys, a treatment with high-dose amphotericin B was carried out. At the same time, the occurrence

Disseminated mucormycosis is an uncommon condition with a high mortality rate and is infrequently diagnosed ante mortem. It is most frequently seen in immunosuppressed patients who are at risk for other unusual infections. The radiological features are not specific. We report the case of a 12-year-old girl in second haematological remission who was successfully treated for a brain abscess due to cerebral mucormycosis and for mucormycosis of the kidney which presented as a pyelonephritis. In her first haematological remission she was diagnosed as having a non-specific pneumonitis, which in retr

Mucormycosis is an uncommon, but important opportunistic fungal infection. The most commonly reported areas of infection are pulmonary, rhinocerebral and cutaneous. It has only rarely been reported to cause peripheral neurological symptoms. This report presents the case of a patient who presented with ascending paralysis due to pulmonary mucormycosis. The presentation is believed to be due to a lesion which abutted the vertebral column and caused infarction of the spinal cord.

We analysed retrospectively our clinical experience with 36 cases of mucormycosis. They were seen during the last 15 years. The diagnosis suspected on clinical grounds, was confirmed in 31 cases by finding the hyphae in hematoxylin-eosin stained material obtained from aspirated or tissue biopsy or by isolation of the fungus in culture. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis was diagnosed in 22 patients. Diabetes was the underlying disorder in 20 cases, kidney failure in one and myelodysplastic syndrome in one. Nine had stable and 11 unstable diabetes (ketoacidosis in 10 and hyperosmolar coma in 1). The ea

Mucormycoses is a fungus which increasingly has been reported as a cause of opportunistic infection during the last 40 years. This infection is most commonly associated with underlying predisposing conditions, particularly diabetic ketoacidosis, hematologic and other malignancies, steroid therapy, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, or various acquired and hereditary immunodeficient disease states. The present report is that of a previously healthy patient with acute renal failure secondary to a postviral rhabdomyolysis syndrome, who received corticosteroids and developed unsuspected and undiag

Three patients of disseminated mucormycosis are described. None had predisposing factors. Two of them presented with nonspecific symptoms along with acute renal failure and peritonitis. Third patient had fulminating primary cutaneous mucormycosis which disseminated later. Development of acute renal failure with smooth enlargement of both kidneys in an apparently healthy individual or appearance of mould in a wound should raise the suspicion of mucormycosis. The hallmark of the infection was vascular invasion and thrombosis. Antemortem diagnosis could be made in one patient only. All patients h

Mucormycosis of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare and fatal infection of neonates and children. This report describes a case of disseminated mucormycosis originating in the gastrointestinal tract of a premature infant of 26 weeks gestational age. The antemortem impression was that of necrotizing enterocolitis, diagnosed at 15 days of age, followed by death at 22 days. However, autopsy revealed extensive colonization and invasion of the small intestine and colon by mucormycosis, with blood and peritoneal fluid cultures positive for Mucorales species but negative for bacteria. There was assoc
