[Rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a case of malignant lymphoma].

Mucormycosis, an uncommon opportunistic fungal infection, usually occurs in immunocompromised patients. It is rapidly progressive and almost always fatal. Patients with lymphoma are susceptible to pulmonary or disseminated mucormycosis, whereas rhinocerebral mucormycosis in such patients, as far as we know, is rarely reported. We present a patient with malignant lymphoma who exhibited such an acute rhinocerebral infection after chemotherapy which manifested initially as a stuffy nose and intractable headache. Then ptosis, proptosis, chemosis and multiple cranial nerve palsies appeared. Eschar

Disseminated mycoses in cattle. A study on nine autopsy cases.

Nine cases affected with disseminated mucormycosis (1.3% of all autopsy cases and 20.0% of systemic mycosis) were found among bovine systemic mycosis examined from 1975 to 1985. The disseminated lesions were found in the lungs (3 cattle), heart (2 cattle), liver (2 cattle), spleen (1 beef cattle), kidneys (1 cattle), central nervous system (1 cattle) and lymph node (1 cattle). Histological examination revealed granulomatous lesions, necrotic foci including infarcts, and thromboangiitis with the hyphae of a member of the Zygomycetes and neutrophil reaction. Granulomatous lesions with asteroid b

The clinical manifestations of cardiac mucormycosis.

The manifestations of cardiac mucormycosis may dominate the clinical picture of disseminated mucormycosis. These manifestations include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, conduction system disease, valvular imcompetence and pericarditis. The development of such manifestations in a febrile compromised host with one or more predisposing factors should prompt consideration of disseminated mucormycosis in the differential diagnosis and initiation of appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

[Disseminated mucormycosis in pediatrics].

The case of a 14 month-old infant presenting with hereditary lymphohistiocytosis is reported. After several days of post-chemotherapy aplasia a peritoneal, cutaneous (blackish necrosis), then pleuropulmonary involvement occurred. Fiberendoscopy showed an esophageal necrosis responsible for a pleural fistula. The child died after a few weeks, despite antifungal treatment. Post mortem examination found disseminated abscesses related to mucormycosis. The 41 pediatric cases in the world-wide literature are recorded.

[Disseminated mucormycosis in a hemodialyzed female patient treated with deferoxamine].

A case is presented of a patient affected of chronic renal failure caused by multiple myeloma who was under a chelating treatment with Depreroxamine as a consequence of iron intoxication and suffered a disseminated mucormycosis. We performed a literature search of previous cases and discuss the probable relation between this opportunistic infection and depheroxamine treatment.

Fatal mucormycosis presenting as an appendiceal mass with metastatic spread to the liver during chemotherapy-induced granulocytopenia.

Opportunistic fungal infections occur with increasing frequency during chemotherapy induced granulocytopenia. A 27-year-old woman developed mucormycosis in the ileocecal region with fatal dissemination to the liver while receiving consolidation therapy for acute T-lymphoblastic leukemia. The infection occurred during a period of decreased colonization resistance in the intestinal tract. Early symptoms were high fever unresponsive to broad spectrum antibiotics, severe pain in the right lower abdominal quadrant and diarrhoea. This was followed by an infiltrate in the right abdomen, ileus, and ic

Subacute disseminated mucormycosis in a diabetic male.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic invasive infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. Rhizopus, Absidia, and Mucor are the most commonly encountered genera. Disease is characterized by vascular invasion, thrombosis, and tissue necrosis. Rhinocerebral disease is the most common manifestation but pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and widely disseminated forms have been reported. Pulmonary and disseminated disease are usually seen in neutropenic patients with leukemia or lymphoma. Both present as fever and unexplained pulmonary infiltrates unresponsive to antibacterials and corticoste

Disseminated mucormycosis due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae in a liver transplant recipient.

Disseminated mucormycosis occurred in a 19 year old female following orthotopic liver transplantation for fulminant Wilson's disease. The causative organism Cunninghamella bertholletiae has previously been described in ten clinical cases, but never before in this setting.

Cerebral mucormycosis: a case report.

Mucormycosis is an unusual complication in immunosuppressed and diabetic patients. Disseminated mucormycosis is even more unusual. One patient with both pulmonary and cerebral mucormycosis is presented. The clinical course is outlined and computed tomographic (CT) findings are presented.

Disseminated mucormycosis presenting with acute renal failure.

An unusual presentation of disseminated mucormycosis as acute renal failure in a patient without any predisposing condition, is reported. The diagnosis was established at autopsy.

Myocardial mucormycosis with emboli in a hemodialysis patient.

A 32-year-old man was found to have disseminated mucormycosis. Echocardiogram demonstrated bilateral ventricular thrombi, but there were no segmental wall motion abnormalities. At autopsy, it was found that these thrombi originated from a myocardial abscess and that death had been caused by septic embolization to the brain. The patient had been on maintenance hemodialysis for 9 years. Two transplants, 7 and 8 years previously, had been unsuccessful and had involved only 3 weeks of immunosuppressive treatment. No factor predisposing to fungal infection could be identified, with the possible exc

Myocardial infarct in disseminated mucormycosis: case report with special emphasis on the pathogenic mechanisms.

A case of myocardium infarction in generalized mucormycosis is reported in a patient suffering from chronic renal failure and receiving a cadaver kidney transplant. At autopsy we found a recent necrotic myocardium, coronary vessels occluded by mucor hyphae and a striking absence of inflammatory cells, chiefly neutrophils. Ultrastructural studies revealed thick-walled fungus that participate in the thrombus and cross the coronary artery in a 'corkscrew' pattern, without important cellular degeneration. Thin-walled irregularly branching structures were observed occluding the microcirculation of

Widely disseminated Cunninghamella mucormycosis in an adult renal transplant patient: case report and review of the literature.

A case of widely disseminated mucormycosis involving Cunninghamella bertholletiae is reported. This represents the first report of Cunninghamella infection in a transplant patient and, to our knowledge, only the eighth reported case of human infection by this saprophytic fungus. The clinical course was similar to most of the previously reported cases in that the patient was immunocompromised prior to the infection and the diagnosis was made too late for appropriate therapeutic intervention. The current case is unique in that it involved a renal allograft recipient; that the major clinical sign
