Association Between Serum Magnesium Status and Bronchial Asthma Severity: A Gender-Matched Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Hypomagnesaemia has been implicated as a potentially modifiable correlate of poorer asthma control, but evidence from Indian outpatient populations remains limited. We evaluated the association between serum magnesium status (hypomagnesaemia versus normal or raised) and bronchial asthma severity, classified by National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) criteria, in a gender-matched retrospective cohort, adjusting for age and gender. We hypothesised a priori that hypomagnesaemia would be associated with a higher NAEPP severity grade. METHODS: A retrospective cohort stu

Clinical Relevance of Magnesium Supplementation In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Magnesium deficiency is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), affecting up to 48% of patients, yet remains underrecognized in routine clinical practice. A bidirectional relationship between hypomagnesemia and insulin resistance has been well characterized, and observational data consistently link higher magnesium intake to reduced risks of T2DM, hypertension, stroke, and heart failure. However, supplementation trials have yielded inconsistent results, limited by small sample sizes, short follow-up, heterogeneous formulations with differing bioavailability, and variable glycemic endpoints.

Serum vs. Dietary Magnesium and Cardiometabolic Outcomes in Saudi Adolescents.

Background/Objectives: Magnesium (Mg) is an essential micronutrient that participates in more than 300 enzymatic reactions, with well-established functions in glucose and lipid metabolism and cardiovascular health. Although serum Mg is routinely used in clinical practice, circulating concentrations may not accurately represent total body Mg status because of tight physiological regulation. The present study evaluated the associations of serum Mg concentration and dietary Mg intake with cardiometabolic outcomes in a cohort of Saudi adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 234 S

Fluctuations of micronutrients during pregnancy in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China: A prospective longitudinal cohort study.

Pregnancy is accompanied by substantial physiological adaptations that may alter maternal micronutrient concentrations. A prospective longitudinal pregnancy-neonatal cohort of 51 healthy pregnant women was established at 6-8 weeks of gestation in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China, confirmed by fetal heart and bud on B-ultrasound. Pregnancy complications, outcomes, and neonatal health at day 42 were confirmed. Forty-three women who completed all assessments and had uncomplicated pregnancies with favorable maternal and neonatal outcomes were included in the final analysis. Whole-blood trace elements a

Magnesium in Diabetes Mellitus and Diabetic Kidney Disease.

Magnesium is a cofactor in cellular energy metabolism and insulin signaling, with recognized effects on vascular tone and cardiac electrophysiology. Hypomagnesemia affects roughly one-third of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in pooled observational data and becomes more frequent in diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Reduced dietary intake accounts for part of the deficit; renal magnesium wasting linked to attenuated insulin signaling and reduced TRPM6 activity at the distal convoluted tubule is a plausible mechanism for the remainder, characterized mainly in cellular and experimental s

Endocrine-Immune Crosstalk in Pediatric Autoimmune Diseases: A Systematic Review of the Role of Micronutrients, with Emphasis on Vitamin D.

Background: Pediatric autoimmune disorders are increasingly common, yet outcomes remain poor due to delayed diagnosis and lack of appropriate actions. Immune system dysfunction frequently coincides with deficiencies in essential micronutrients and cofactors, including vitamin D. Objectives: This study evaluated the contribution of vitamin D and cofactor (e.g., magnesium) deficiencies to impaired endocrine secretion and autoimmune susceptibility, which may trigger or exacerbate autoimmunity in children. Methods: This systematic review examines the complex interactions between micronutrients-par

Medication-induced Micronutrient Deficiencies in Early-stage Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing global health burden, with early-stage patients often managed through long-term pharmacotherapy. However, prolonged use of common medications may unintentionally disrupt micronutrient balance, compounding the metabolic and cardiovascular risks already present in CKD. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to explore the associations between frequently prescribed medications and the development of micronutrient deficiencies in early-stage, non-dialysis CKD patients, highlighting underlying mechanisms, clinical implications, and potential man

Photooxidation in interveinal tissues of magnesium-deficient leaves is associated with sugar accumulation.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency often leads to leaf photooxidation, typically manifested as interveinal chlorosis. This symptom arises from an imbalance between light energy absorption and its utilization, resulting in excessive excitation energy, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and subsequent photodamage. However, the spatial heterogeneity of Mg deficiency responses within a leaf remains poorly understood, particularly the physiological basis for the greater severity of photooxidation in interveinal tissues compared with vein-adjacent areas. Here, a hydroponic culture system was employed

Kidney Transplantation From a Heterozygous CLDN19 Carrier in a Child With FHHNC: A 2-Year Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis is a rare autosomal recessive tubulopathy caused by mutations in CLDN16 or CLDN19, leading to progressive chronic kidney disease. While kidney transplantation is the definitive treatment, the safety of using living-related heterozygous carrier donors remains debated due to potential subclinical tubular dysfunction. We report the 2-year follow-up of a pediatric patient with FHHNC and a CLDN19 mutation who received a graft from his heterozygous carrier mother. CASE REPORT: A male patient presented at 3 months of age wi

Essential element and toxic metal dyshomeostasis in childhood autism spectrum disorder: a comprehensive narrative review of correlations, tissue-specific distribution, and multifactorial regulation.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social communication and repetitive stereotyped behaviors, with a rising global prevalence. Its etiology involves genetic, environmental, and epigenetic interactions, among which essential elements [including trace elements such as zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and macrominerals like magnesium (Mg)] and toxic metals (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd)) are key environmental regulators of neurodevelopment. This narrative review systematically summarizes the association

[The 520th case: neck swelling, hypocalcemic convulsions, and spontaneous hemorrhage of a cystic parathyroid adenoma].

A 33-year-old man was admitted with a 4-day history of neck swelling and intermittent convulsions for 3 days. Physical examination revealed a soft, tender nodule measuring~4 cm×3 cm in the right lobe of the thyroid gland. Chvostek's and Trousseau's signs were positive. Laboratory tests revealed hypocalcemia, normal serum phosphorus and magnesium levels, elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, and reduced vitamin D levels. Bone turnover markers indicated active bone formation, and bone density testing revealed severe osteoporosis. Neck ultrasound and CT suggested a thyroid-origin mass; howev

Infantile 22q11.2 deletion syndrome with secondary monogenic variants following inconclusive whole exome sequencing: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), historically known as DiGeorge syndrome, is a common microdeletion disorder characterized by a wide range of multisystem manifestations. While Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) is increasingly used as a first-tier diagnostic tool for complex infant presentations, it has limited sensitivity for detecting copy-number variants such as microdeletions. Parental consanguinity adds further diagnostic complexity by increasing the likelihood of co-occurring single-gene variants. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 12-month-old female bor

Exploring the Effect of Nutrition on Fetal Development in Pregnant Patients With Inflammatory Gut Diseases: A Scoping Review.

Inflammatory gut diseases (IGDs) are increasing in prevalence and pose unique challenges during pregnancy. Poorly controlled IGDs in pregnant women are linked to adverse fetal outcomes such as low birth weight, preterm birth, and impaired gut microbiome development. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in magnesium, folate, and vitamin B12, exacerbate these risks due to both inadequate intake and malabsorption. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the role of nutrition in fetal development among pregnant women with IGDs, highlighting dietary strategies that may enhance maternal gastrointest

Magnesium Dysregulation.

Magnesium (Mg) is a critical intracellular cation involved in energy metabolism, neuromuscular and cardiac stability, and endocrine regulation of calcium and potassium. In horses, Mg dysregulation is common in gastrointestinal disease, systemic inflammation and critical illness, yet often remains underdiagnosed. Hypomagnesemia contributes to ileus, cardiac arrhythmias, and refractory hypocalcemia or hypokalemia, whereas hypermagnesemia is rarely reported and typically iatrogenic. This review summarizes Mg physiology, regulation, clinical manifestations of Mg dysregulation, diagnostic approache

Stroke mimic caused by severe hypomagnesemia: a case report and literature review.

Association of hypomagnesemia and neurological deficits is a well documented issue, but despite its importance, magnesium levels are rarely tested during the acute phase of a stroke. Focal neurological deficits have rarely been ascribed to hypomagnesemia. We report the case of a patient treated with Proton Pump Inhibitors and Metformin with a history of unexplained transient neurological deficits who developed stroke-like symptoms of hemiparesis and aphasia with recovery after correction of his hypomagnesemia. We also present a brief literature review regarding Magnesium's role in focal neurol
