Urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin as a predictive biomarker for brain injury in very preterm infants.

Brain injury in preterm infants (BIPI) remains a significant clinical challenge with limited diagnostic biomarkers. This study aimed to investigate urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (6-SMT) levels as a potential noninvasive biomarker for brain injury in very preterm infants. A prospective cohort study was conducted with 127 very preterm infants admitted to our hospital from January to December 2024. Infants were categorized into brain-injury and control group based on neuroimaging findings. Urinary 6-SMT concentrations were measured on postnatal days 1, 3, and 7 using ELISA. Clinical parameters and

Neuraxial-Enhanced Hemodynamic Control in a Nine-Year-Old Child With Pheochromocytoma: A Case Report.

Pheochromocytoma is a rare cause of severe secondary hypertension in children, and its perioperative management can be particularly challenging due to catecholamine-mediated hemodynamic instability. We report a case of a nine-year-old male with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency who presented with blurred vision and papilledema and was found to have a systolic blood pressure of 190 mmHg, consistent with a hypertensive emergency. Imaging revealed a 5.2 × 3.5 × 5.5 cm vascular left adrenal mass with central necrosis, and biochemical testing showed markedly elevated urinary vanil

The association between micronutrient status and clinical outcomes in children with cancer undergoing treatment: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Micronutrient abnormalities are common in children and young people (CYP) with cancer, yet their clinical implications remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the prevalence of micronutrient abnormalities and their associations with treatment complications and prognostic indicator outcomes in CYP undergoing cancer therapy. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library (inception-April 2025) for studies evaluating blood micronutrient status in CYP (0-21 years) with cancer. Primary outcomes were treatment-related toxicities; secondary outc

Micronutrient balance and brain function: neuropsychological, metabolic, and clinical interactions.

Micronutrients, encompassing both vitamins and trace elements, play a central role in brain development, metabolic homeostasis, and cognitive performance from early life through old age. Rather than acting solely as enzyme cofactors or antioxidants, many of these nutrients influence transcriptional programs, shape synaptic signaling, and participate in neuroimmune and neuroendocrine crosstalk, and observational, interventional, and experimental studies now show that both deficiency and excess of specific micronutrients are linked to changes in memory, mood, attention, and executive function, a

CorA2-mediated magnesium transport is essential for stress adaptation and virulence of Streptococcus agalactiae.

Magnesium (Mg2+) homeostasis is critical for bacterial survival and virulence. Streptococcus agalactiae is a major piscine and mammalian pathogen, yet the molecular mechanisms governing its Mg2+ acquisition remain undefined. Here, we identify and characterize CorA2 as an essential Mg2+ transporter in a hypervirulent S. agalactiae strain HN016. Through biochemical and genetic assays including a corA2 deletion mutant (ΔcorA2), a complemented strain, and structure-guided point mutants (GGGG gain of function and D206K loss of function), we demonstrate that CorA2 is essential for Mg2+ uptake. CorA2

Mutation of Mg-chelatase subunit I causes distinct phenotypes of chlorophyll accumulation and seedling etiolation in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and melon (Cucumis melo).

Chlorophyll biosynthesis is essential for plant growth and development, as it directly modulates photosynthetic capacity. Here, we identified yellow mutants with chlorophyll deficiency and abnormal thylakoid stacking-disturbed in watermelon (lethal) and melon (non-lethal), and mapped the traits to SNPs (H359R in watermelon, T193A in melon) in ChlI, which encodes Mg-chelatase subunit I. Suppression of ClChlI in watermelon and CmChlI in melon caused reduced chlorophyll accumulation and leaf yellowing. Moreover, the mutated ChlI exhibited altered autologous protein structures, and weakened intera

Proton pump inhibitor induced hypocalcemia presenting with carpopedal spasm- a rare case report from Nepal.

BACKGROUND: A frequent electrolyte imbalance, hypocalcaemia can cause anything from asymptomatic symptoms to potentially fatal neuromuscular and cardiac symptoms. Tetany, carpopedal spasm, and ECG abnormalities such QT prolongation can result from acute drops in serum calcium. Long-term usage of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is frequently disregarded as a reversible etiology, despite the fact that drugs are known causes. To avoid major issues and guarantee timely treatment, early detection is essential. CASE PRESENTATION: Acute painful carpopedal spasms and perioral numbness were reported by

Single‑Atom‑Induced Electronic Polarization at Adjacent Cluster Promotes Efficient Hydrogen Storage in Magnesium Hydride.

Single-atom/cluster composite catalysts demonstrate remarkable advantages in heterogeneous catalysis due to their unique electronic synergy, yet their catalytic performance and mechanisms in solid-state hydrogen storage reactions remain poorly explored. Here we construct a niobium-based single-atom/cluster composite catalyst (NbSA/AC) on magnesium hydride (MgH2), a representative hydrogen-storage material. NbSA/AC enables MgH2 to release approximately 4 wt.% H2 at a temperature as low as 175°C, outperforming both Nb single-atom and cluster catalysts, as well as most reported catalysts. Theoret

Neuroclearance dysfunction in autism with sleep disorder: MRI evidence and mediation by systemic iron deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and exacerbate neurodevelopmental impairments. Yet, the mechanistic link between sleep disruption, brain fluid clearance, and systemic trace element status remains unclear. METHODS: We enrolled 230 children with ASD (114 with sleep disorder, ASD-SD; 116 without, ASD-nSD) and 110 typically developing controls. Neuroclearance function was quantified using diffusion kurtosis imaging along the perivascular space (DKI-ALPS), free water fraction (FW), and perivascular space volume fraction (PVSVF). S

Targeted knockout of barley Ycf54 demonstrates its essential function in the Mg-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: The Mg-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase is one of the 15 enzymes required for biosynthesis of chlorophyll in plants. The Ycf54 protein is a component associated with this enzyme and probably functions as a chaperone. Due to the lack of mutants in the Ycf54 gene, we targeted this gene in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) by RNA-guided Cas9 genome editing to dissect its role in chlorophyll biosynthesis. RESULTS: Two guide RNAs were designed and delivered via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. We generated four homozygous mutant alleles harboring deletions of 1, 2, 6 and 27 b

Micronutrient status among women in the midlife in selected Asian regions: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Micronutrient status is critical for the health and well-being of midlife women during the menopausal transition. However, data on micronutrient intake and status among midlife Asian women remain limited. This review examined the landscape of micronutrient intake, deficiency, and health impact in this population. METHODS: Using a scoping review approach guided by a Population-Concept-Contextframework, we descriptively synthesized evidence from population-level and peer-reviewed data across six Asian regions (India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, and Taiwan). Biofortification of Sprouts and Microgreens with Trace Elements and Calcium.

A large proportion of the world's population struggles to meet the body's requirements for certain minerals. It raises interest in methods of enhancing their levels in food raw materials. Sprouts and microgreens are highly promising raw materials for biofortification. Mineral accumulation in these raw materials may be influenced by genetic factors, as well as by concentration, form and method of mineral application, light conditions, and the plant growth period. In some cases, studies have reported several dozen-fold increases in the content of the applied mineral compared with control samples

Distinct Mg²⁺ responses and species-specific transcriptional regulation of the magnesium transporter MGR2 in Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg²⁺) is essential for chlorophyll synthesis, enzyme activation, and photosynthesis, but the differential regulation of Mg²⁺ homeostasis between the two founding Saccharum species (Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum) remains unknown. RESULTS: We systematically characterized the MGR gene family in S. spontaneum and S. officinarum and uncovered distinct physiological responses to Mg²⁺ availability between the two species. Comparative expression analysis across the leaf developmental gradient and diurnal cycles revealed species-specific transcriptional dynamics

Oxygen vacancy junctions and hydrogen-transfer pathway control in Mg-based solid-state hydrogen storage.

Oxygen-vacancy engineering has become a common strategy for improving Mg-based solid-state hydrogen storage, but oxygen deficiency is often described more broadly than the observed catalytic behaviour justifies. A spectroscopically detectable vacancy is not necessarily a catalytically relevant one, and vacancy concentration alone cannot explain why defect-rich catalysts with apparently similar signatures diverge in sorption behaviour and cycling stability. Here, a catalytically operative vacancy-bearing junction is defined as a defect-containing catalyst-hydride, oxide-metal-hydride, or oxide-

Good neighbours: current-year needles in Nordmann fir rely on their 1-year-old neighbouring needles for adequate nutrient supply.

The annual transport patterns of mineral nutrients in conifers remain poorly understood. Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) deficiencies often occur in planted conifer stands and cannot be easily remedied by simply adding these nutrients to soil. This study examined translocation and remobilization of Ca and Mg in young Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana) trees. Our data revealed that Ca and Mg absorbed by the roots do not reach the needles during the current growth season, indicating that internal nutrient remobilization is crucial for the growth of new needles, particularly shortly after the budb

[Micronutrients and phytotherapy in the response to stress].

Introduction: micronutrients fulfil essential functions as cofactors and regulators of the metabolic pathways involved in the response to stress. When present in appropriate quantities, they help to maintain neuroendocrine and immune homeostasis in situations of high physiological demand. Adaptogens can normalize biological functions and strengthen systems affected by stress, protecting the organism against psychological and environmental insults. Objectives: to evaluate the bidirectional relationship between micronutrients and stress, with emphasis on the role of adaptogens. Methods: we revie

Leaf- and canopy-level chlorotic symptom variations are associated with differential Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus infection patterns in Ponkan mandarin under field conditions.

Ponkan mandarin (Citrus reticulata cv. Ponkan) is an important fruit crop planted across different countries. One of its most devastating diseases is citrus huanglongbing (HLB), which is associated with infection by the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). Although studies on HLB in Ponkan mandarin have been conducted, symptom heterogeneity and its association with CLas titer under field conditions remain underexplored. We examined the association between symptom variation and CLas infection status in a Ponkan mandarin grove by categorizing symptoms at both the leaf and canopy (
