Marine iodine emissions in a changing world.

Iodine is a critical trace element involved in many diverse and important processes in the Earth system. The importance of iodine for human health has been known for over a century, with low iodine in the diet being linked to goitre, cretinism and neonatal death. Research over the last few decades has shown that iodine has significant impacts on tropospheric photochemistry, ultimately impacting climate by reducing the radiative forcing of ozone (O3) and air quality by reducing extreme O3 concentrations in polluted regions. Iodine is naturally present in the ocean, predominantly as aqueous iodi

Iodoprophylaxis and thyroid autoimmunity: an update.

Adequate iodine intake is necessary for normal thyroid function. Iodine deficiency is associated with serious complications, but also iodine excess can lead to thyroid dysfunction, and iodine supplementation aimed to prevent iodine deficiency disorders has been associated with development of thyroid autoimmunity. The epidemiology of thyroid diseases has undergone profound changes since the implementation of iodoprophylaxis, notably by means of iodine-enriched salt, specifically resulting in decreased prevalence of goiter and neonatal hypothyroidism, improved cognitive function development in i

The natural product biosynthetic potential of Red Sea nudibranch microbiomes.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem that can be ameliorated by the discovery of novel drug candidates. Bacterial associates are often the source of pharmaceutically active natural products isolated from marine invertebrates, and thus, important targets for drug discovery. While the microbiomes of many marine organisms have been extensively studied, microbial communities from chemically-rich nudibranchs, marine invertebrates that often possess chemical defences, are relatively unknown. METHODS: We applied both culture-dependent and independent approaches to better understand

Prevalence and course of thyroid dysfunction in neonates at high risk of Graves' disease or with non-autoimmune hyperthyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal hyperthyroidism may be caused by a permanent non-autoimmune genetic disorder or, more frequently, by maternally transmitted high serum TRAb levels. Variable thyroid dysfunction may be observed in this second context. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of neonatal non-autoimmune hyperthyroidism and of the different types of thyroid function in neonates with a high risk of hyperthyroidism due to maternal Graves' disease (GD). DESIGN AND METHODS: This observational cohort study included all neonates identified in the database of a single academic pediatric care center, over

A Novel Mutation in the Thyroglobulin Gene Resulting in Neonatal Goiter and Congenital Hypothyroidism in an Eritrean Infant.

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) due to dyshormonogenesis may occur due to mutations in any of the key genes involved in thyroid hormone biosynthesis (TG, TPO, DUOX2, DUOXA2, SLC5A5, IYD, SLC26A4 and SLC26A7). Mutations in the thyroglobulin gene (TG) are frequently associated with goiter, which may present fetally or neonatally, although a spectrum of phenotypes is reported. We present the case of a woman of Eritrean origin who presented in the third trimester of pregnancy in the early stages of labor. Ultrasound at presentation revealed a fetal neck swelling consistent with a goiter. Following

Genetic Manipulation on Zebrafish duox Recapitulate the Clinical Manifestations of Congenital Hypothyroidism.

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a highly prevalent but treatable neonatal endocrine disorder. Thyroid dyshormonogenesis is the main cause of congenital hypothyroidism in Chinese CH patients, and DUOX2 is the most frequent mutated gene involved in H2O2 production. In humans, the primary sources for H2O2 production are DUOX1 and DUOX2, while in zebrafish there is only a single orthologue for DUOX1 and DUOX2. In this study, duox mutant zebrafish were generated through knockdown duox by morpholino or knockout duox by CRISPR Cas9. The associated phenotypes were investigated and rescued by thyroxi

Neonatal Dyshormonogenetic Goiter with Hypothyroidism Associated with Novel Mutations in Thyroglobulin and SLC26A4 Gene.

Congenital goiter is an uncommon cause of neck swelling and it can be associated with hypothyroidism. We discuss a case of primary hypothyroidism with goiter presenting at birth. Ultrasound showed the enlargement of the gland and thyroid function tests detected marked hypothyroidism. Genetic analysis via next generation sequencing (NGS) was performed finding two mutations associated with thyroid dyshormonogenesis: c.7813 C > T, homozygous in the exon 45 of the thyroglobulin gene (TG) and c.1682 G > A heterozygous in exon 15 of the SLC26A4 gene (pendrin). Case Report: Functional Analysis and Neuropsychological Evaluation of Dyshormonogenetic Fetal Goiter in Siblings Caused by Novel Compound Hyterozygous TPO Gene Mutations.

INTRODUCTION: It is rare for a euthyroid mother to carry a child with a fetal goiter. However, cases of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) caused by thyroid dyshormonogenesis have been reported. Even though gene mutations associated with fetal goiter have been reported in a few studies, the effects on intellectual development have not been investigated. This study aimed to characterize and investigate the underlying genetic mechanism of CH and neuropsychological development and growth of two siblings with CH-induced fetal goiters. CASE REPORT: Two male siblings from a non-consanguineous marriage

Update on pediatric hyperthyroidism.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is intended to highlight recent studies which provide new data on the epidemiology and management of children with hyperthyroidism, including neonates. RECENT FINDINGS: A French study demonstrates differences in age-related trends in incidence of hyperthyroidism in males versus females and suggests the overall incidence may be increasing. New studies confirm the effectiveness and safety of long-term medical therapy (up to 10 years), including from the first randomized trial of short-term versus long-term therapy. Radioiodine ablation (RAI) is the main alternativ

Maternal and neonatal outcomes and determinants of iodine deficiency in third trimester of pregnancy in an iodine sufficient area.

BACKGROUND: Mild to moderate iodine deficiency in pregnant women may expose them to the increased risk of the development of goiter and thyroid disorder. There is a relationship between low maternal UIC (Urinary iodine concentration) in pregnancy and diminished placental weight and neonatal head circumference. The current study was an attempt to assess iodine nutritional status, its determinants and relationship with maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: In this population based cross-sectional study, which was conducted from April 2017 to September 2018, information was collected from 884

Management of thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy.

Thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy should be adequately managed and controlled to prevent maternal and fetal complications. The evaluation of thyroid function in pregnant women is challenged by the physiological adaptations associated with pregnancy, and the treatment with antithyroid drugs (ATD) raises concerns for the pregnant woman and the fetus. Thyrotoxicosis in pregnant women is mainly of autoimmune origin, and the measurement of thyroid stimulating hormone-receptor antibodies (TRAb) plays a key role. TRAb helps to distinguish the hyperthyroidism of Graves' disease from gestational hyperthy
