BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in paediatric haemato-oncology (PHO) patients. Empirical antifungal therapy in high-risk children must be informed by local epidemiological, species-level and antifungal-susceptibility data, yet contemporary Indian paediatric cohort data remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical, microbiological, therapeutic and outcome profile of probable and proven IFI in a tertiary care South Indian PHO unit over five years, and to benchmark the findings against contemporary international literature.

Rhino-orbital mucormycosis can present aggressively in immunocompetent adults, often with atypical initial symptoms that lead to misdiagnosis and dangerous delays. A high index of suspicion is paramount when facing a rapidly progressive orbital infection unresponsive to conventional therapy. Survival hinges on a prompt, aggressive multimodal strategy: immediate histopathological confirmation (identifying broad, aseptate hyphae), radical surgical debridement, and early initiation of high-dose liposomal amphotericin B.

The escalating burden of invasive fungal infections, compounded by rising antifungal resistance and evolving pathogen epidemiology, underscores the urgent need for novel agents. There is a requirement for these novel agents to combine broad-spectrum activity with >90% oral bioavailability and a 48% acceptable safety profile. Fosmanogepix, an N-phosphonooxymethylene prodrug of manogepix (APX001A), is a first-in-class glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored wall transfer protein 1 (Gwt1) inhibitor in Phase III clinical trials for invasive fungal infections. It is a potent inhibitor of the fu

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection with an increasing incidence in clinical reports. Its non-specific presentation often mimics lung cancer, posing significant diagnostic challenges. This report aims to improve clinician recognition of this condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman with diabetes presented with cough and sputum production. Imaging revealed a right hilar mass with bronchial obstruction, mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and cystic cavities (Figure 1A). While initial suspicion favored lung cancer, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of bro

Introduction Patients with a history of or active COVID-19 infection are predisposed to the development of opportunist bacterial and fungal infections. A rising incidence of a rare occurring fungal infection earlier, called mucormycosis, has been reported in abundance across the globe since March 2021, especially in India just as the second wave of COVID-19 began, caused by the trifecta of hyperglycemia (new-onset or exacerbation of pre-existing diabetes), oxygen therapy (invasive or noninvasive ventilation), and prolonged intake of steroids. Objective The present study aimed at assessing th

Invasive fungal sinusitis is a serious infection in immunocompromised patients, and distinguishing Aspergillus from Mucorales is diagnostically challenging but clinically critical, as the two organisms require markedly different treatment. A 56-year-old man with alcohol-related cirrhosis status post orthotopic liver transplantation, maintained on tacrolimus and prednisone with well-controlled type 2 diabetes, presented with progressive left facial pain, numbness, and swelling. Despite evaluation by otolaryngology, dental extraction, and antibiotic therapy, his symptoms worsened. Initial imagin

We present a rare case of colonic mucormycosis with hepatic dissemination after kidney transplantation. Early diagnosis was achieved through rapid metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of blood and liver abscess samples, enabling timely intervention. The patient achieved complete clinical recovery with preserved allograft function. Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is extremely rare, reported cases frequently require colectomy (83.3%) and carry a mortality rate approaching 50%. This case highlights key management principles for intestinal mucormycosis in transplant recipients: rapid pathog

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is a rare, life-threatening invasive fungal infection that is often diagnosed late because of nonspecific clinical and endoscopic findings. Khat or Qat (Catha edulis) leaves may harbor environmental fungi, including Mucor species, and chronic chewing may contribute to gastrointestinal mucosal injury. However, a possible association between Qat use and gastrointestinal mucormycosis has not been established. We report a case of a 60-year-old man with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus and long-standing Qat chewing who was admitted after an out-of-hospital card

Mucormycosis is a severe fungal infection with high mortality in immunocompromised patients. Although most cases occur sporadically in the community setting, there are reports of healthcare associated outbreaks of mucormycosis. We describe the investigation and clinical features of an outbreak of mucormycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus in a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) unit in Brazil. Cases were screened through the hospital records, defined according to the EORTC/MSGERC criteria, and classified as HSCT unit-acquired or not. Mucormycosis incidence was monitored from two years b

Given the increased complexity of immunosuppressive treatments, the prolonged survival of immunocompromised patients, and widespread use of anti-Aspergillus prophylaxis, over recent years the incidence of pulmonary infections caused by non-Aspergillus filamentous fungi has increased. Mucorales represent the most frequently isolated group, followed by Fusarium and Scedosporium, with prevalence varying significantly in different geographic regions and clinical contexts. Although overall incidence remains low, intrinsic resistance to many antifungal agents markedly heightens the mortality associa

Many treatment recommendations for invasive mould infections, particularly those caused by rare moulds, rely on non-randomised comparative effectiveness research (CER), which is vulnerable to design and analytical limitations that can bias effect estimates. We systematically reviewed 117 non-randomised studies evaluating interventions for aspergillosis, mucormycosis, fusariosis, scedosporiosis, lomentosporiosis, or phaeohyphomycosis published from 2003 to 2024. We assessed structural susceptibility to bias from misalignment of eligibility, treatment assignment, and start of follow-up, and appr

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Endoscopic resection is widely adopted for early colorectal cancer. Most studies examining the effectiveness of endoscopic treatment of early colorectal cancer are from Japan, and little is known about the success of this treatment in other areas of the world. The authors performed this study to investigate the effectiveness of endoscopic treatment of early colorectal cancer.
METHODS: The medical records of patients with histologically proven early colorectal cancer and who were treated by endoscopic resection between January 1985 and December 2000 were reviewed retrospect

BACKGROUND: Custom-made subperiosteal dental implants (CMSDIs) have shown potential as a reconstructive solution for rehabilitating maxillary defects following post-COVID-19 rhino-orbital mucormycosis (PCROM). This systematic review evaluates the clinical outcomes of CMSDIs in such defects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and the Cochrane Library for studies published through March 2025. Data regarding patient demographics, implant materials, design techniques, surgical approaches, prosthetic rehabilitation, and postope

Mixed pulmonary infection by Aspergillus and Mucorales is a rare condition but highly fatal in immunocompromised hosts. We report a 61-year-old diabetic man with diabetic kidney disease who presented with fever and cough. Bronchoscopy-guided lung biopsy and lavage MUCOR 28S PCR assay confirmed dual invasive Aspergillus and Mucorales coinfection. He developed massive hemoptysis, septic shock, and eventually succumbed despite treatment with antibiotics, liposomal amphotericin B and posaconazole. This case underscores the importance of early diagnosis, antifungal therapy and vigilant monitoring i

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to provide an insight into medical treatment practices among patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in Germany. An investigation of ICD codes and ATC classes of CRS patients in general and otolaryngology offices in Germany should reveal the prevalent treatment behaviors of German physicians.
METHODS: The present study used data from the Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA). The study sample included patients from 940 general (GP) and 106 otolaryngology (ENT) practices who were coded as having chronic sinusitis (ICD-10: J32) or nasal polyps (ICD-10
