Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis is a life-threatening infection typically requiring complete surgical debridement of necrotic tissue for survival. The authors have reported a case of invasive mucormycosis in a 22-year-old female with severe diabetic ketoacidosis and recent COVID-19 infection. The patient developed extensive intracranial disease, including cavernous sinus thrombosis and internal carotid artery occlusion, which precluded complete surgical source control without extensive morbidity. Facing such circumstance, a multidisciplinary team pursued an aggressive, individualized multi

Mucormycosis, an aggressive fungal infection caused by members of the order Mucorales, progresses rapidly and is associated with high mortality, particularly in immunocompromised hosts such as patients with uncontrolled diabetes, transplant recipients or those with COVID-19-associated immunosuppression. Early diagnosis remains challenging with current clinical methods, yet it is essential to reduce mortality. This review examines the evolution of diagnostic strategies for mucormycosis, ranging from conventional techniques such as histopathology, culture and microscopy to advanced and emerging

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Pulmonary fungal infections, which have traditionally been associated with patients who are immunocompromised, are now increasingly recognized among immunocompetent individuals. This trend is attributable to multiple factors including altered environmental conditions linked to climate change, postviral syndromes, and advances in ICU practices. Immunocompetent hosts typically generate effective responses to pulmonary fungal infection; however, severe disease may develop in the presence of abnormal lung structure or function, transient immune dysfunction, or antigenic hypersens

BACKGROUND: Current Mycosis Study Group Education and Research Consortium (MSGERC) and European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) response criteria for clinical trials often fail to comprehensively assess outcomes of the total patient experience, prompting the need for innovative methodologies.
METHODS: Utilizing a modified Delphi process, members of MSGERC and ECMM were sent a series of surveys utilizing an online platform. Except for the first survey, participants' responses remained anonymous to the steering committee. The first survey was elaborated based on expert opinion, with ea

SUMMARYThe increasing incidence of invasive fungal infections caused by resistant Candida species and molds presents a growing clinical challenge, particularly in immunocompromised patients. While echinocandins and azoles remain the cornerstone of antifungal therapy, their use may be limited by increasing reports of resistance, tolerance, drug-drug interactions, and hepatotoxicity. Liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB), a broad-spectrum antifungal agent with a more favorable safety profile than conventional amphotericin formulations, may offer a valuable alternative in selected high-risk scenarios.

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplants are at an increased risk for invasive fungal infections (IFI), which constitute the primary cause of mortality in this population. The epidemiology and risk factors for invasive fungal infections differ according to the type of transplant. There are limited studies from India concerning the spectrum of invasive mold infections (IMI) in transplant recipients. This study aims to elucidate the clinical microbiological spectrum of mold infections in transplant recipients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a

Mucor is a species-rich genus in Mucoraceae, predominantly saprotrophic in soil and dung. Some Mucor members can cause mucormycosis but also have valuable practical applications in kinds of industries such as the food and pharmaceutical industry. Mucor melanoleucus sp. nov. isolated from giant panda feces is described herein based on morphological characteristics, physiological experiments and phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) - large subunit of ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA) sequences demonstrates that this new species is closely allied to M. satu

Annually, aspergillosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis, and mucormycosis result in approximately 1,500,000, 650,000, 120,000, and 59,000 deaths, respectively. Mortality rates among patients receiving antifungal drug treatment range from 30% to 90%. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve the efficacy of antifungal drug therapies against infections by these high-priority fungal diseases. Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Rhizopus delemar are the most common causative pathogens. We have previously developed DectiSomes, which are liposomes loaded with antif

Mucormycosis is a rapidly fatal, angioinvasive fungal infection. The disease presents as distinct clinical entities, with each being linked to specific risk factors and routes of transmission. Rhino-orbito-cerebral (ROC) manifestation remains the predominant form of mucormycosis in the developing world, especially in India amongst patients with uncontrolled diabetes. Limited literature is available on experimental animal models to study mucormycosis, and a murine model of ROC mucormycosis that recapitulates the risk factor (diabetes) and mode of acquisition (intranasal) of this disease is larg

OBJECTIVES: Patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) complicated by mucormycosis face a significantly elevated risk of mortality and present considerable therapeutic challenges. This study aimed to delineate nursing management and propose a structured care model for a case of SAA complicated by mucormycosis undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
METHODS: The case involved an 18-years-old female with SAA and a progressive right oromaxillofacial mucormycosis ulcer. During salvage allogeneic HSCT, a nurse-led multidisciplinary team implemented care informed by a

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inborn error of immunity leading to severe invasive mold infections (IMIs). Questions remain regarding the safety of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients following IMI. We retrospectively collected data from CGD patients undergoing HSCT within 2 years after a diagnosis of probable or proven IMI in France. The primary endpoint was to describe 1-year overall survival (OS). 14 patients were included, with aspergillosis (n = 10), mucormycosis (N = 2), scedosporiosis, or lomentosporiosis (n = 1 each). IMI status at time of HCST include

Oesophageal mucormycosis is an uncommon life-threatening opportunistic fungal infection usually managed with antifungal therapy and aggressive surgical debridement. We describe a 54-year-old male who developed oesophageal mucormycosis 3 months post-allograft for multiply-relapsed leukaemia. Surgery was not performed due to prohibitive perioperative risk. He received 6 weeks of intravenous Liposomal Amphotericin B followed by long-term isavuconazole. Serial endoscopy and PET/CT imaging demonstrated resolution of infection to 7 months post-transplant where he died from relapsed leukaemia. We dem

Fungal germination is a critical developmental transition that underlies environmental adaptation and pathogenicity, yet how the cell wall is molecularly reprogrammed during this process remains poorly understood. Here we show that germination of Rhizopus delemar involves a developmentally programmed transition from a β-1,3-glucan-rich dormant scaffold to a chitin-chitosan-dominated polarized wall. Using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and cytochemistry approaches, we show that resting conidia contains a rigid β-1,3-glucan- and chitosan-rich core beneath a persistent melani

Mucormycosis, triggered by fungi of the order Mucorales, represents a potentially fatal invasive mycosis, with death rates over 50% despite intensive therapy. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a sharp increase in cases, especially in individuals with diabetes mellitus and those undergoing immunosuppressive treatment, emphasizing significant gaps in our comprehension of disease pathogenesis. Emerging molecular studies have highlighted key virulence factors, such as the CotH family of invasins that facilitate endothelial invasion via interaction with glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), complex iro
