Invasive tracheal mucormycosis is a rare but rapidly progressive central airway fungal infection associated with high mortality. Its early clinical manifestations and radiological features are often nonspecific, which may result in delayed diagnosis. We report a case of invasive tracheal mucormycosis in a patient with diabetic ketosis. The patient underwent emergency tracheostomy for necrotizing upper airway obstruction. Bronchoscopic examination revealed extensive white necrotic tissue in the subglottic region and trachea. Broad, ribbon-like, pauci-septate hyphae were identified in both bronc

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales and Candida is a yeast which is the most common cause of fungal infections in humans. The most commonly known risk factor for these fungal infections is uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM), followed by other causes of immunosuppression like neutropenia and corticosteroid therapy. In atypical clinical presentations, all differential diagnosis should be considered, and followed by histopathological and microbiological examination for diagnosis of fungal infections like mucormycosis and candidiasis in uncommon locat

A 4-year-old domestic shorthair cat from Switzerland presented with seizures and peripheral lymphadenomegaly. Thoracic radiographs demonstrated cranioventral pulmonary masses and enlargement of the cranial mediastinal and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed generalized lymphadenopathy characterized by rounded, homogeneously hypoechoic lymph nodes with an effaced hilus. Imaging differentials included lymphoma, feline coronavirus-associated granulomatous disease, and other fungal infections; cytology and culture confirmed mucormycosis. The pulmonary masses and lympha

INTRODUCTION: Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis is the most common clinical form of mucormycosis. The most common underlying condition associated with this form is diabetes, especially in cases of glycemic imbalance.
OBSERVATION: This report concerns a 13-year-old girl with type 1 diabetes who was admitted for ketoacidosis. Clinical and radiological examinations revealed progressive orbital cellulitis (Chandler stage II, then V). Despite initiating antibiotic and antifungal treatment, there was no improvement. Surgery was performed to remove necrotic tissue, and mycological and anatomopathol

Mucormycosis, caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales, is associated with patients who suffer from uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Blood glucose management in diabetic patients is performed through multiple strategies, with metformin being a common drug for controlling these levels. In this work, we show that the addition of low or high concentrations of metformin during the culture of Mucor lusitanicus and Rhizopus arrhizus differentially affects the toxicity of their cell-free culture supernatants toward Caenorhabditis elegans. The same effect was observed in infections of Galleria

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection that contributes to the high mortality rate of 45-90% reported in India. In November 2023, India's National Disease Surveillance Program identified a surge in mucormycetes fungal infection among reported cases at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda, Punjab. The descriptive analysis identified diabetes and acute stress events (hospitalizations, surgeries, dental procedures, or trauma in the past 6 weeks) among 70% and 50% of cases, respectively. A case-control study was conducted among individuals with diabetes to identif

UNLABELLED: Mucormycosis is an invasive mold disease (IMD) caused by fungi in the order Mucorales. Early initiation of active antifungal therapy is critical for optimal outcomes, and molecular diagnostics can speed up the time to critical results. We reviewed 6 years of Mucorales polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing to assess agreement with culture, histopathology, and/or pan-fungal sequencing across different specimen types. Medical record review was also performed to adjudicate cases of suspected IMD from our institution. A total of 5,779 PCRs and 2,017 fungal cultures from the same patie

OBJECTIVES: Rhino-sino-orbital mucormycosis (RSOM) is a life-threatening, emergent medical and surgical condition with high mortality. Although direct intraorbital delivery methods of amphotericin B have been explored, clear guidelines for its administration and dosing are lacking. We conducted this prospective study to determine the role of intraorbital amphotericin B (IOAB) in the management of advanced RSOM and assessed histologic changes in response to IOAB administration.
METHODS: Patients with advanced orbital disease were offered treatment with IOAB before exenteration. Individuals who

Invasive fungal diseases (IFDs), including invasive aspergillosis (IA) and invasive mucormycosis (IM), occur primarily in immunocompromised and/or hospitalized patients and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Isavuconazole and posaconazole are triazole compounds approved for the treatment of IA/IM in adults and children, while voriconazole is approved for IA treatment only. All triazole compounds inhibit CYP3A, and both isavuconazole and posaconazole inhibit the transporter P-gp. Pediatric patients being treated for leukemia with vincristine frequently experience fungal infe

Mucormycosis is a well-recognized fungal disease affecting Tasmanian platypuses (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). The causative agent, Mucor amphibiorum, has been found to infect both native and introduced amphibians of the Australian mainland; however, there are no previous reports of this infection in platypuses of the Australian mainland.

Fungi harbor unique primary and secondary metabolic pathways that represent a hidden treasure of biochemical and natural compounds. Their metabolism is central to their ability to interact with, to adapt to and to survive in host environments, and to cause human disease and great harm. Among these is Lichtheimia corymbifera, an emerging causative agent of mucormycosis that has been classified as high priority fungal pathogen by the World Health Organization and is gaining increasing importance as a model organism for research on invasive fungal infections. We reconstructed a genome-scale L. co

Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Rhizopus microsporus are clinically important Mucorales that frequently exhibit mixed peaks in chromatograms from conventional Sanger sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Intragenomic ITS heterogeneity has been reported in R. microsporus but has not yet been characterized in Cunninghamella species. This study investigated ITS patterns in nine C. bertholletiae, three Cunninghamella echinulata, and two R. microsporus isolates collected in Taiwan. The ITS-D1/D2 regions were examined by PCR, cloning, and Sanger sequencing; one C. bertholletia

Isavuconazole is approved for invasive aspergillosis (IA) and mucormycosis, but real-world data in patients with hematological malignancies are limited. This retrospective study (2022-2025) included adult patients with hematological malignancies and proven/probable invasive mold disease (IMD) who were treated with isavuconazole for ≥72 h at two Chinese hospitals. The primary endpoint was week 6 treatment success (survival, clinical/radiological improvement, and no discontinuation due to failure/toxicity). Secondary endpoints included all-cause and IMD-attributable mortality at weeks 6 and 12 (

Mucormycosis is an aggressive invasive fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals and may be rapidly fatal if diagnosis and treatment are delayed. We report a man in his sixties with no known immunosuppressive conditions who presented with progressive headache, cranial nerve dysfunction, and sinusitis symptoms. Neuroimaging demonstrated an infiltrative skull base lesion with orbital and intracranial extension, initially suggestive of a neoplastic process. Surgical exploration and histopathological examination revealed invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis

CASE: A 30-year-old woman sustained a complex open pelvic ring injury with urogenital and rectal injuries and a severe Morel-Lavallée lesion after getting stuck between a train platform and an arriving train. Orthopaedic trauma management included extensive debridements, temporary internal and external fixation, staged plate osteosynthesis, and negative-pressure wound therapy. Progressive soft-tissue necrosis due to mucormycosis necessitated a hemipelvectomy. At the 1-year follow-up, the patient had returned to independent living.
CONCLUSION: Complex open peripelvic injuries, complicated by m
