BACKGROUND: Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) is an extensively grown and consumed vegetable. To a lesser extent than other Liliaceae vegetables, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) due to asparagus has been reported. However, only a few case reports of asparagus IgE-mediated allergy have been published. In a previous study, we demonstrated that two lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) (Aspa o 1.01 and Aspa o 1.02) were relevant allergens of asparagus.
OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively analysed the 27 patients diagnosed with asparagus allergy during the last 5 years. All of them reported adverse symptoms

Microbial colonization of the human gut occurs soon after birth, proceeds through well-studied phases and is affected by lifestyle and other factors. Less is known about phage community dynamics during infant gut colonization due to small study sizes, an inability to leverage large databases and a lack of appropriate bioinformatics tools. Here we reanalysed whole microbial community shotgun sequencing data of 12,262 longitudinal samples from 887 children from four countries across four years of life as part of the The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study. We develo

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a transitory form of diabetes occurring in pregnancy with maternal and neonatal health consequences if left untreated. GDM can, in most instances, be managed non-medically through self-care practices, such as eating healthy or engaging in physical activity. This is especially relevant in a global health context with scarce resources. There is no official definition of "GDM self-care"; hence, the content and delivery modes of such interventions may vary greatly. Therefore, this study aimed to landscape GDM self-care interventions in low- and mi

OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a disorder that can occur during the second trimester of pregnancy. Our main objective was to perform a retrospective propensity-score matched analysis of a general population and to examine commonly occurring adverse maternal and infant outcomes in Taiwanese primiparous women with GDM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based, retrospective propensity-score matched cohort study using the claims data from the Taiwan's National Health Insurance program between 2000 and 2015. A 1:4 propensity matched cohort of women who

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) over a 10-year period at the Reference Service in Neonatal Screening of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RSNS-RS).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Historical cohort study including all newborns screened for CH by the RSNS-RS from January 2008 until December 2017. Data of all newborns with neonatal TSH (neoTSH; heel prick test) values ≥ 9 mIU/L were collected. According to neoTSH values, the newborns were allocated into two groups: Group 1 (G1), comprising newborns with neoTSH ≥ 9 mIU/L and serum TSH (sTSH) < 10 mIU/L, and Group 2 (G

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal diagnosis of bone and mineralization anomalies is associated with a wide range of etiologies and prognoses. The improvement of antenatal ultrasound combined with the development of molecular diagnosis in genetics has transformed antenatal medicine into a challenging discipline. Of the various known causes of bone abnormalities and hypomineralization, calcium and phosphate metabolism disorders are exceptional. An accurate diagnosis is crucial for providing appropriate genetic counseling and medical follow-up after birth.
CASE: We report on three siblings with severe bone

Neonatal screening for congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is based on the measurement of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in whole dried blood samples on filter paper in all newborns. The objective of screening for CH is to prevent mental retardation, which is irreversible in the event of a late diagnosis, by setting up prompt treatment (before day 15) with levothyroxine. The threshold value of TSH on filter paper on day 3 is 17 mIU/L in France in the GSP method (GSP, Genetic Screening Processor, Perkin Elmer): It is one of the highest thresholds used in the world. In many countries, the TSH thre

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), characterized by a transitory form of diabetes induced by insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell dysfunction during pregnancy, has been identified as one of the major obstacles in achieving improved maternal and child health. Approximately 9-25% of pregnancies worldwide are impacted by the acute, long-term, and transgenerational health complications of this disease. Here, we discuss how GDM affects longstanding maternal and neonatal outcomes, as well as health risks that likely persist into future generations. In addition to the current challenges in the

BACKGROUND: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is reported to be more common in preterm infants than in term infants, especially in sick preterm infants. Though a frequent possibility of transitory thyroidal alterations in this category of neonates, the evolution of CH to transient or permanent forms is unpredictable.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed medical records of 28 preterm infants (<37 weeks gestation) who had exhibited a positive screening for CH at birth during the period 2000-2015 followed in our Center. Children were divided into three groups: permanent CH (PCH) with thyroid dysgen

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes is one of the diseases associated with pregnancy with higher rate of complications. Despite being a transitory condition, short and long term complications related to gestational diabetes have been described. There is scientific evidence to say that good metabolic control decreases perinatal complications. In 2011, new criteria was proposed for its diagnosis, which made possible its diagnosis during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. The aim of this study is to compare neonatal morbidity in two groups of women with gestational diabetes diagnosis before and after

BACKGROUND: Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is a heterogeneous disease caused by arginine vasopressin deficiency; its management implies a profound understanding of the pathophysiology and the clinical spectrum. The aim of the study was to describe the clinical characteristics that indicate organicity in children and adolescents with central diabetes insipidus treated at the Department of Endocrinology from The Child Health's Institute during 2001 to 2013.
METHODS: Cross-sectional, retrospective study. 79 cases of patients diagnosed with CDI (51 males and 28 females) from 1 month to 16 years

We investigated the effects of different windows of testosterone propionate (TP) treatment during foetal and neonatal life in female rats to determine whether and when excess androgen exposure would cause disruption of adult reproductive function. Animals were killed prepubertally at d25 and as adults at d90. Plasma samples were taken for hormone analysis and ovaries serial sectioned for morphometric analyses. In prepubertal animals, only foetal+postnatal and late postnatal TP resulted in increased body weights, and an increase in transitory, but reduced antral follicle numbers without affecti

We describe the history and current implementation of an inexpensive thin layer chromatography (TLC) method, vertical sandwich-type continuous/evaporative TLC with fixed mobile phase volume, that is convenient for detecting and identifying reducing sugars of clinical relevance in the paper-borne blood and urine samples collected in neonatal screening programmes. This method facilitates screening by providing a considerable degree of standardization of chromatographic results. Among some 555,000 newborns to which it has been applied, it has detected 10 cases of classical galactosaemia, 7 cases

BACKGROUND: There have been reports of patients with primary hypothyroidism not identified by TSH measurement due to a presumably delayed rise in serum TSH. However, there are no data on the incidence of false negative results in neonatal screening programs employing primary TSH assay for diagnosis.
AIM: To investigate the incidence of false negative results in a neonatal screening program using the primary TSH approach and evaluate a strategy to avoid misdiagnosis.
INFANTS AND METHODS: 190 newborns, with initial TSH > 15.0 IU/l and < 20.0 IU/l (screening cutoff). These infants were submitte

Activating mutations in the Kir6.2 subunit of the adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel is a cause of neonatal diabetes associated with various neurological disorders that include developmental delay, epilepsy, and neonatal diabetes (known together as DEND syndrome). This article reports a girl who developed infantile spasms and early onset diabetes mellitus at the age of 3 months and revealed DEND syndrome with a heterozygous activating mutation in Kir6.2. Infantile spasms with hypsarrhythmia on the electroencephalogram were severe and refractory to steroids. Steroids comb

INTRODUCTION: The wide use of infertility drugs and assisted reproduction has resulted in 4- to 5-fold increase in the incidence of triplet pregnancies, which carry an extremely high risk of maternal complications and adverse perinatal outcome. In Hungary, reduction of multifetal pregnancies is available for all pregnant women with multifetal gestation since 1998. The goal of the procedure is to ensure better outcome for surviving fetuses. Counseling of pregnant patients should include the maternal and fetal risks of triplet gestation without multifetal pregnancy reduction.
AIM: To assess the

Neonatal diabetes mellitus is an infrequent carbohydrate metabolism disorder with an estimated incidence of approximately one case every 400,000 to 600,000 live newborns. We present the case of a 1-month-old girl with irritability, polyuria, and a 24-h history of eagerness to feed, without fever or other associated symptoms. The patient's karyotype, obtained by amniocentesis, was 46XX with a pericentric chromosome 9 inversion. Her birth weight and length were 2,230 g (-2.65 SD) and 46 cm (-1.8 SD), respectively. Glycemic determinations during the first 72 h of extrauterine life oscillated betw
