INTRODUCTION: Postnatal weight loss in infants is physiological, but excessive loss predisposes for dehydration and other morbidities. Existing nomograms, primarily developed in temperate climates, may not apply to arid regions as environmental conditions influence weight loss patterns. This study aimed to develop hour-specific percentile nomograms for postnatal weight loss in exclusively breastfed, healthy infants (≥36 weeks) from an arid region, facilitating early identification of those at risk of excessive loss.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted between November 2021 and F

BACKGROUND: Infants affected by late fetal growth restriction are at risk of adverse perinatal outcomes, either due to placental insufficiency or the consequences of late iatrogenic prematurity. There is no randomized trial reporting the optimal timing of delivery, and recommending delivery at 37 weeks can cause harm. Antenatal ultrasound parameters can be used to risk-stratify these pregnancies into low-risk cases, which are associated with a lower likelihood of adverse outcomes and are thus suitable for full-term delivery, and high-risk cases, which may benefit from early-term delivery.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is an uncommon skin disorder seen in neonates, typically manifesting as subcutaneous nodules or plaques within the first few weeks after birth, often following a difficult delivery. The condition is associated with hypercalcaemia, which can present with symptoms such as lethargy, irritability, hypotonia and dehydration, sometimes resembling sepsis. Fine-needle aspiration cytology typically reveals adipocytes and needle-shaped crystals while showing little to no fat necrosis, inflammatory infiltrate or multinucleated giant cells. The diagnosis is

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants. Both fluid overload and dehydration can lead to AKI. Our aim was to examine the associations between early fluid and sodium intake and AKI.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study comprised 421 VLBW infants born at < 32 weeks. Detailed data on fluid management during the first 24 h of life, diuresis and weight changes during the first postnatal week and plasma creatinine measurements during the first 2 postnatal weeks were acquired from an electronic patient information system. AKI was defined according t

BACKGROUND: Filtered-sunlight phototherapy (FSPT) is safe and non-inferior to conventional phototherapy for treating mild-to-moderate hyperbilirubinemia during birth hospitalization. We evaluated the performance of FSPT among newborns with moderate-to-severe hyperbilirubinemia.
METHODS: Newborns were randomized to FSPT or intensive electric phototherapy (IEPT). Primary outcomes were safety, defined as the absence of hyperthermia, hypothermia, dehydration, or sunburn; and efficacy, defined as the rate of increase in total serum or plasma bilirubin (TSB) < 3.4 µmol/L/h for newborns aged ≤72 h o

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella spp. are frequently found as commensals of the gastrointestinal tract in infants, and their presence in stool cultures is often dismissed as colonization. However, their role in causing severe diarrhea in previously healthy infants remains unclear.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 4 cases of previously healthy term infants under 3 months of age hospitalized between 2016 and 2024 with unusually severe diarrhea. All had Klebsiella spp. isolated in stool cultures as the sole pathogen. Clinical and laboratory features were evaluated. Additional hospital records from 202

BACKGROUND: Arginine vasopressin deficiency (AVP-D), previously called central diabetes insipidus (central DI), is the inability to concentrate urine despite elevated serum osmolality (i.e., volume depletion) related to inadequate production of the posterior pituitary hormone vasopressin. Without treatment, which typically consists of fluids and pharmacologic vasopressin analogs, AVP-D can quickly lead to hypernatremia and dehydration. Management of AVP-D in neonates and infants is particularly challenging for many reasons: their inability to communicate thirst, their limited renal concentrati

BACKGROUND: Neonatal intracardiac thrombosis (ICT) is an uncommon but increasingly recognized condition that impacts neonatal morbidity and mortality, especially in critically ill term and preterm infants. Management includes supportive care and pharmacological or surgical intervention. This study explores the challenges associated with ICT in neonates.
METHODS: We described the clinical presentation and multidisciplinary management of two cases of intracardiac thrombosis. We also reviewed literature from Medline and PubMed using MeSH terms ("intracardiac thrombosis" AND "newborn").

BACKGROUND: In calves with diarrhea, it is critical to accurately determine the severity of dehydration and provide adequate fluid therapy. However, objective criteria are still limited. The aim of this study, a prospective cohort diagnostic study, is to compare caudal vena cava maximum diameter with expiration (CVCmax), caudal vena cava minimum diameter with inspiration (CVCmin), and caudal vena cava collapsibility index (CVC-CI) measurements before and after fluid therapy and to establish cut-off values for distinguishing between moderately and severely dehydrated calves. Twenty-four calves,

BACKGROUND: After neonatal conditions, the leading causes of child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa are malaria, lower respiratory infections, and dehydration. Many of these deaths could be averted with basic and widely-available health interventions, but quality of care remains low. We aimed to assess adherence to clinical guidelines for these conditions in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Nigeria, and estimate the proportion of guideline non-adherence that is explained by gaps in health care provider knowledge versus other factors.
METHODS: We conducted an observation

Diarrhea in newborn calves is a serious global health problem. It poses challenges for animal industry, veterinarians and researchers due to the rapid onset of dehydration. Mixed infections make treatment complicated, and many young calves suffer high rates of illness and death from this condition. Numerous enteropathogens are associated with diarrhea in newborn calves, encompassing viruses, bacteria, parasites, and protozoa. Their occurrence differs by region, yet the most prevalent infections include E. coli, Salmonella species, Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium difficile, Rotavirus, Coro

INTRODUCTION: In developing countries like Vietnam, childhood diarrhea remains frequent and is often treated empirically without an etiological diagnosis.
METHODOLOGY: Patients aged under five years, hospitalized at a gastroenterology department with acute diarrhea, were recruited at one hospital. Enteric pathogens were tested by real-time PCR.
RESULTS: 451 children with diarrhea were included, 65.2% were male. 56.3% were aged under 12 months. Upon inclusion, 49.7% (224/451) had nausea and vomiting, and 17.5% had bloody diarrhea. 27.1% of children had a fever, and 37.7% and 4.2% had moderate

BACKGROUND: Cameroon has faced frequent and severe cholera outbreaks since 1971, with case-fatality rates (CFRs) ranging from 12% in 1991, to 5.3% in 2014, all higher than the less than 1% cholera CFR target set by WHO. However, not many studies providing insight on context-specific risk factors have been published. The purpose of this study was to describe the recent cholera outbreaks in Cameroon and to determine factors associated with mortality.
METHODS: This was an analytical cross-sectional study that employed a retrospective design exploiting Ministry of Public Health cholera line-lists

BACKGROUND: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Vibrio cholerae are notable enteric bacterial pathogens that cause diarrheal illnesses in resource-limited settings (e.g., Bangladesh). We aimed to explore the epidemiology and the clinical presentation of diarrhea caused by either V. cholerae or ETEC as a single-pathogen, or as a co-infection with both pathogens among patients requiring hospitalization.
METHODS: We conducted the study using data from the Diarrheal Diseases Surveillance System of Dhaka Hospital, icddr,b from 2008 to 2023. A multivariable logistic regression model was use

A male infant, aged 6 days, was admitted to the hospital due to respiratory distress and systemic desquamative rash after birth. The infant presented with erythema and desquamative rash, respiratory failure, recurrent infections, chronic diarrhea, hypernatremic dehydration, and growth retardation. Comprehensive treatment, including anti-infection therapy, intravenous immunoglobulin administration, and skin care, resulted in improvement of the rash, but recurrent infections persisted. Second-generation sequencing revealed a homozygous mutation in the SPINK5 gene, consistent with the pathogenic
