Surface display of the COE antigen of porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus on Bacillus subtilis spores.

Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) infects pigs of all ages by invading small intestine, causing acute diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration with high morbidity and mortality among newborn piglets. However, current PEDV vaccines are not effective to protect the pigs from field epidemic strains because of poor mucosal immune response and strain variation. Therefore, it is indispensable to develop a novel oral vaccine based on epidemic strains. Bacillus subtilis spores are attractive delivery vehicles for oral vaccination on account of the safety, high stability, and low cost. In this study,

Case report: Acute severe hyponatremia-induced seizures in a newborn: a community-acquired case and literature review.

Severe neonatal hyponatremia represents a critical electrolyte imbalance with potentially severe neurological outcomes, a condition rarely documented in community-acquired, full-term newborns. This report underscores a unique case of a 23-day-old, previously healthy, full-term male neonate experiencing severe hyponatremia that precipitated seizures, underscoring the urgency of prompt recognition and intervention. The neonate presented with symptoms including vomiting, groaning, chills, fixed staring, and limb tremors. Critical findings upon admission encompassed hypothermia, hypotension, tachy

Characteristics and outcome of pregnancy-related acute kidney injury in a teaching hospital in a low-resource setting: a five-year retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-related kidney injury contributes to a high burden of acute kidney injury in low-resource settings and causes maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Few studies have examined the impact of acute kidney injury in resource-limited countries, with very limited research on pregnancy-specific disorders in Ethiopia. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of pregnancy-related acute kidney injury, outcomes and associated factors. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the clinical profile and maternal-fetal outcome of pregnancy-related acute

[Salt fever].

The importance of hypernatraemia-induced fever was highlighted in this journal by Pál Heim 100 years ago. Despite the longstanding experience, its possibility is still rarely considered. Here we present the differential diagnosis of neonatal hypernatraemia through the example of a four-day-old boy admitted for fever. Hypernatraemia at this age typically results from inadequate breast feeding, with weight loss exceeding 10% of the birth weight. The degree of weight loss is proportional to the degree of hypernatraemia. Hypernatraemia and not dehydration induces the fever, as cases of infants wit

Integrated Metagenomic and Metabolomics Profiling Reveals Key Gut Microbiota and Metabolites Associated with Weaning Stress in Piglets.

(1) Background: Weaning is a challenging and stressful event in the pig's life, which disrupts physiological balance and induces oxidative stress. Microbiota play a significant role during the weaning process in piglets. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate key gut microbiota and metabolites associated with weaning stress in piglets. (2) Methods: A total of ten newborn piglet littermates were randomly assigned to two groups: S (suckling normally) and W (weaned at 21 d; all euthanized at 23 d). Specimens of the cecum were dehydrated with ethanol, cleared with xylene, embedded in paraffin,

Congenital Diarrhoeas and Enteropathies.

Congenital diarrhoeas and enteropathies (CODE) are a heterogeneous group of disorders. Many affected infants present with catastrophic dehydration in the first few days of life, although the clinical phenotype is variable. Advances in the understanding of underlying pathomechanisms and genetic testing, as well as improved management, in particular intravenous nutrition support, have allowed affected patients to survive well beyond childhood. Awareness and understanding of these rare diseases are hence needed, both amongst paediatricians and adult physicians. In this review, we discuss the diff

Sublingual Traumatic Ulceration in a Nine-Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

Sublingual traumatic ulceration is a rare inflammatory disorder characterized by benign, ulcerative, and granulomatous processes and caused by repetitive trauma from mandibular anterior incisors to the mucosa of the ventral surface of the tongue. Historically known as the Riga-Fede disease, sublingual ulceration is associated with natal and neonatal teeth in newborns and infants. Even cases have been reported of Riga-Fede disease associated with the eruption of mandibular primary incisors. Commonly, the treatment for Riga-Fede disease is the smoothening of incisal edges or the extraction of of

Chronic kidney disease associated with extremely premature birth and extremely low birth weight may progress through the burden of growth.

Chronic kidney disease associated with low birth weight and/or premature birth (L/P-CKD) in infants may result from a decreased number of nephrons at birth. These infants may develop acute kidney injury due to exposure to nephrotoxic substances or other events during nephrogenesis in early infancy. Nonetheless, L/P-CKD progression remains unclear. We present three cases of L/P-CKD diagnosed after neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) discharge. Three patients were born extremely prematurely (gestational age, 24-26 weeks) with extremely low birth weight (606-906 g). They were admitted to the NICU

Risk, Attributable Fraction and Attributable Number of Cause-Specific Heat-Related Emergency Hospital Admissions in Switzerland.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the relationship between heat and emergency hospital admissions (EHAs) in Switzerland using clinically relevant metrics. METHODS: Applying distributed lag non-linear models, we investigated temperature-admission associations between May and September 1998-2019 for various disease groups, by age class and gender. We estimated the relative risk (RR) for moderate (29°C) and extreme (34°C) daily maximum temperatures relative to disease-specific optimum temperature, and calculated attributable fractions (AFs) for hot days and the following week. We also calculated the total

A Rare Cause of Neonatal Salt Wasting Syndrome: Clinical Management of a Case Diagnosed with Pseudohypoaldosteronism due to a Novel Homozygous Variant in the SCNN1B Gene.

Pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) is a rare disorder that, if not promptly recognized and treated, can lead to life-threatening hyperkalemia resulting in cardiac arrest and death. Systemic PHA is caused by variants that deactivate the epithelial sodium channel subunits. Management is challenging due to high-dose oral replacement therapy, and patients with systemic PHA require lifelong treatment. Here, we present the clinical course of a newborn diagnosed with PHA at seven days of age due to severe dehydration, inadequate feeding, vomiting, and lethargy. The infant was found to be homozygous for th

A Rare and Unusual Case of Hypernatremic Dehydration in a Newborn Presenting With Adrenal Haemorrhage and Leading to Acute Kidney Injury.

Adrenal haemorrhage, although a rare entity in the neonatal period, is a known complication of birth asphyxia. Adrenal haemorrhage progresses differently depending on the type and extent of the glands involved. Adrenal haemorrhage can cause persistent jaundice, fever, dehydration, scrotal swelling, abdominal wall discolouration, septicemia, and a shock-like state. Here, we report the case of a four-day-old male infant who presented with jaundice, poor feeding, and hypernatremic dehydration. The patient developed acute kidney injury and, eventually, renal failure due to adrenal haemorrhage. He

CRISPR/Cas13a-based rapid detection method for porcine deltacoronavirus.

BACKGROUND: Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a newly discovered porcine intestinal pathogenic coronavirus with a single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome and an envelope. PDCoV infects pigs of different ages and causes acute diarrhea and vomiting in newborn piglets. In severe cases, infection leads to dehydration, exhaustion, and death in sick piglets, entailing great economic losses on pig farms. The clinical symptoms of PDCoV infection are very similar to those of other porcine enteroviruses. Although it is difficult to distinguish these viral infections without testing, monitoring PDCoV
