ABSTRACT: Neonatal diarrhea in calves frequently results in severe metabolic disturbances, particularly D-lactic acidosis and hyperkalemia. These conditions are associated with weakness, apathy, and, in the case of D-lactic acidosis, with neurological deficits such as impairment of the palpebral reflex. Severe hyperkalemia can be accompanied by potentially life-threatening cardiac conduction abnormalities. The second part of this review article provides a narrative overview of therapeutic approaches as well as the prognostic relevance of these key metabolic disorders.

Neonatal diarrhea syndrome (NDS) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in lambs during early life. Dietary nucleotides modulate the immune response and enhance tissue development and cellular proliferation. This study evaluated the effects of a nucleotide-rich yeast extract on the clinical course of NDS and associated hematological, biochemical, and oxidative stress responses under field conditions. Ninety-six newborn lambs were allocated to a nucleotide-supplemented group (NG, n = 48) or a control group (CG, n = 48). NG lambs received 1g/day of a nucleotide-rich yeast extract (Nucleofor

INTRODUCTION: Pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) is a rare condition that can lead to life-threatening hyperkalemia, cardiac arrest and death if not rapidly recognised and treated. Systemic PHA results from the inactivation of variants in genes encoding subunits of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC). Frequent dose revision is required in oral replacement therapy in patients with systemic PHA. This condition requires a lifelong close follow-up and treatment process in patients.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this study, we present the clinical follow-up of a newborn diagnosed with PHA who presented at 9 da

BACKGROUND: The neonatal mortality rate in Pakistan has been the second highest worldwide. Since mortality rate is higher in rural area than in urban area, to understand newborn care and response to progressing disease by rural families is vital to comprehend the background of poor neonatal outcomes. But in Pakistan research on newborn home care is scarce. This study aimed to understand the local context of neonatal morbidity derived from rural and remote Pakistan by exploring the postnatal and newborn home care experiences of mothers whose neonates required admission after being cared for at

Strong ion (metabolic) acidosis, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances are common in neonatal calves with diarrhoea. Balanced crystalloids may provide advantages for rehydration purposes in those animals due to their polyionic composition and higher buffer capacity compared to conventional buffer-free fluids such as 0.9 % NaCl. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the effects of three infusion solutions - an acetate-containing balanced electrolyte solution (Sterofundin® ISO; Stero), 0.9 % saline (NaCl), and an isotonic saline-sodium bicarbonate mixture (NaClBic) - on acid-base sta

Neonatal hypernatremic dehydration is a serious condition associated with inadequate fluid intake, often due to insufficient lactation. In addition to the complications directly related to the condition itself, the re-establishment of plasma tonicity may also lead to serious consequences if done abruptly. Management involves careful fluid restoration and gradual correction of electrolyte imbalance. The increasing incidence of this clinical condition highlights the importance of raising awareness among parents and healthcare professionals for early diagnosis and prevention. We report a case of

Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) causes transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE), leading to severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration in pigs. Mortality rates among newborn piglets are particularly alarming, causing significant economic losses to the livestock industry. In the absence of effective antiviral drugs, developing novel antiviral agents is crucial. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), as a hydrophilic endogenous bile acid, plays a key role in regulating bile acid metabolism and treating hepatobiliary diseases. Studies indicate that UDCA exhibits specific antiviral effects against the

We report a cluster of acute gastrointestinal illness in seven preterm neonates temporally associated with a single batch of powdered human milk fortifier (HMF). Symptoms developed within 3-4 h of ingestion and included profuse diarrhea, dehydration, hypoglycemia, and shock. Blood and stool cultures were sterile. Microbiological analysis of unopened HMF sachets revealed contamination with Bacillus cereus and other spore-forming organisms. Withdrawal of the implicated batch and reinforcement of infection-control measures resulted in no further cases. This outbreak highlights the risk of pathoge

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypernatremic dehydration (NHD) is a dangerous disease that can lead to hospitalization of the infant, serious complications, and death. Despite the significant advantages of breast milk for both the mother and the baby, some neonates who are exclusively breastfed experience malnutrition in the first few days.
RESEARCH AIM: This study aims to evaluate the clinical presentations, maternal and neonatal risk factors, and preventive strategies for hypernatremic dehydration in term and late-preterm infants who were exclusively breastfed.
METHODS: In this study, neonates who w

PURPOSE: Feeding problems are common among premature infants and can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, and prolonged hospitalization. Effective interventions are needed to improve oral feeding skills. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a combined intervention-Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention (PIOMI) and Kinesiotaping (KST)-on feeding performance in premature infants, compared to each intervention administered individually.
METHODS: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with 45 premature infants (gestational age 30-34 wk) diagnosed with feeding difficulties.

Acute suppurative parotitis is rare in neonates, typically unilateral, and linked to risk factors like prematurity. We report an extremely rare case of acute bilateral suppurative parotitis in a 10-day-old, full-term male neonate who lacked established risk factors, being exclusively breastfed without dehydration. The patient presented with fever and rapid bilateral parotid swelling. Initial labs showed leukocytosis and elevated CRP, but serum amylase was notably low, confirming its limited diagnostic utility in newborns. Due to rapid clinical deterioration despite empirical intravenous antibi

Aim of the study The aim of this study was to distinguish between hyperthermia (HT) due to sepsis and environmental hyperthermia (EH) or dehydration fever (DF). Hyperthermia (HT) in neonates may be due to many reasons, common among them being environmental hyperthermia (EH), dehydration fever (DF), and sepsis. It is important to make a provisional diagnosis at presentation for better outcomes and prevent the indiscriminate use of antimicrobials. We therefore decided to study the profile of term neonates with HT and analyze which clinical or laboratory parameters are associated with the diagnos

BACKGROUND: Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a major pneumoenteric pathogen that causes diarrhea in calves and respiratory disease in cattle of all ages. While BCoV-associated diarrhea is well-documented, reports of respiratory infection in neonatal calves remain limited, particularly in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Here, we describe a case of BCoV-induced pulmonary infection in a calf that presented without clinical respiratory signs.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-day-old Holstein calf developed white, watery diarrhea and dehydration that subsequently progressed to astasia, showing no respiratory signs

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-resource settings. Hypoxia and metabolic derangements that occur during asphyxia predispose neonates to electrolyte abnormalities, which may worsen the clinical course and contribute to poor outcomes. Early recognition and management of such imbalances can improve survival and prevent long-term neurological damage. This study aimed to determine the incidence, predictors, and early outcomes of electrolyte imbalance among term neonates admitted with birth asphyxia in Lira Regional Referral Hospit

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the independent effects of intravenous (IV) fluid supplementation and different enteral feeding patterns on bilirubin elimination in healthy term neonates treated with intensive phototherapy for severe indirect hyperbilirubinemia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center, retrospective cohort study included 271 healthy term newborns who received phototherapy for indirect hyperbilirubinemia between 2023 and 2025. The neonates were divided into two groups: those receiving enteral feeding alone (n = 160) and those receiving IV fluid supplementation in addi

Mucositis is a common debilitating complication of chemotherapy in cancer patients that limits enteral nutrition, causes diarrhea, dehydration and electrolyte wasting. 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), a non-digestible oligosaccharide initially isolated from human milk, is critical in the development of gastrointestinal function and microbiome maturation in the newborn. Here, we demonstrate, that supplementation of 2'-FL in a medical food with magnesium (Humolyte®), protects Wistar rats from gastrointestinal mucosal injury from chemotherapeutic drugs doxorubicin, irinotecan, 5-flurouracil, and cispla

Background/Objectives: Exclusive breastfeeding improves infant health and development, while suboptimal breastfeeding increases risks of hyperbilirubinemia and neonatal hypernatremic dehydration (NHD). This study aims to estimate the prevalence of NHD associated with exclusive breastfeeding and to identify maternal and neonatal risk factors through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from Febru

This study presents an integrated experimental-numerical framework for the multiscale mechanical characterization of dehydrated newborn piglet cortical bone. A self-calibrated nanoindentation methodology, coupled with inverse finite element identification based on the Johnson-Cook constitutive model, is introduced to quantify both surface and bulk mechanical properties. Particular attention is given to indentation size effects and preliminary sex-related trends in mechanical response. The proposed framework enables robust estimation of elastoplastic parameters and highlights the presence of a
