Otitis due to mucorales is very rare. Saksenaea causing mucormycosis is even more uncommon. Till date, there have been only two reports of otitis due to S. vasiformis globally. Herein, we report a case of necrotizing otitis externa in a 75-year-old diabetic woman complicated with facial nerve palsy due to a non sporulating mucorales which was identified as S. vasiformis using D1D2 sequencing. Despite initiation of antifungal therapy, her clinical condition deteriorated, likely reflecting delayed diagnosis and partially optimized treatment. To the best of knowledge this is the first case of nec

Central nervous system mucormycosis (CNS-M) is a severe disease with difficult and often delayed diagnosis, leading to high mortality. The aim of this new study was to assess clinical and radiological presentation according to underlying conditions and dissemination routes to optimize diagnostic strategies. We conducted a retrospective national study including 54 CNS-M cases diagnosed between 2005 and 2020, with brain imaging reviewed by two neuroradiologists. CNS-M resulted from presumed hematogenous dissemination in 29 patients (54%) and from direct extension in 25 (46%), known as rhino-orbi

A 43-year-old man with myelodysplastic syndrome underwent umbilical cord blood transplantation (CBT). On day 4 post-transplantation, he developed right periorbital pain and oculomotor nerve palsy. Brain MRI revealed fluid accumulation in the sphenoid sinus and mucosal thickening in the right maxillary sinus. Given the extraordinarily early onset and neurological involvement, fungal meningitis, including mucormycosis, was suspected, and empirical high-dose liposomal amphotericin B (10 mg/kg/day) was initiated. Nasal discharge culture yielded Rhizomucor species, later identified as Rhizomucor mi

Diseases of the nasal cavity have a diverse etiology and cause severe disorders in animals. Conidiobolomycosis is a type of zygomycosis caused by the fungus Conidiobolus spp., occurring more frequently in sheep. The objective of this study is to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics, as well as microbiological and histopathological findings, of an outbreak of conidiobolomycosis in sheep. A total of 12 animals out of a herd of 70 were affected, representing a morbidity of 17.1%; mortality and lethality were 11.4% (8/70) and 66.6% (8/12), respectively, of which 4 sheep died s

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a severe opportunistic fungal infection that has become a notable complication in patients recovering from coronavirus disease 2019, particularly in individuals with preexisting diabetes mellitus or a history of corticosteroid administration. Coinfection with cytomegalovirus in immunocompromised patients with coronavirus disease 2019 is increasingly documented yet remains insufficiently acknowledged. This case is significant owing to the uncommon simultaneous occurrence of cutaneous mucormycosis and cytomegalovirus infection in a post-coronavirus disease patient, un

Immunocompromised patients are at high risk for life-threatening polymicrobial infections, often challenging to diagnose conventionally. We report a 60-year-old male with relapsed angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, fever, and pancytopenia post-chemotherapy. Chest CT showed scattered inflammation. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) culture grew only Klebsiella aerogenes, but fluorescent staining revealed aseptate hyphae. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of BALF identified concurrent infections with Rhizopus microsporus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Pneumocystis jirovecii, cytomegalovir

Background and Objectives: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) occurring after infection with SARS-CoV-2 has emerged as an increasingly reported complication in the post-COVID-19 era. Post-COVID-19 osteonecrosis of the jaw (PC-ONJ) has been described in association with both COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) and non-fungal phenotypes. This narrative review aims to synthesize and critically analyze the available evidence regarding terminology and classification, epidemiology and risk factors, pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical and imaging characteristics, diagnostic challenges, and managem

Controlling endoparasites in free-range laying hens remains a challenge, as the existence of infective stages in the soil poses a continuing risk of infection. To reduce the presence of oocysts and nematode eggs in the soil, the saprophytic filamentous parasitophagous fungus Mucor circinelloides was distributed in the shelters and pens of two small-scale poultry farms following a two-phase protocol. In the first trial, the conditioning phase involved spraying fungal spores in two pens every three days for eighteen or nine days before 16-week-old Lohmann Brown-Classic pullets were housed; subse

BACKGROUND: Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is a skin condition characterized by darkening and thickening of skin with formation of irregular folds, usually limited to a few specific areas of the body. Recently, AN has been reported to be linked to hyperinsulinemia and obesity. The aim of the present study was to determine whether or not the presence of AN in obese Japanese children is a reliable cutaneous marker.
METHODS: The authors analyzed the clinical characteristics of 439 obese Japanese children (260 boys, 179 girls; mean age 10.1 years; mean percentage overweight 51.9%), who had visited Tsu

Invasive fungal infection (IFI) simultaneously due to three fungi is rare. IFI caused by two fungal agents is relatively commoner in transplant patients. Most common IFI worldwide is candidiasis, whereas in India, aspergillosis and mucormycosis infections are commoner. Severe dengue viral infection has been linked with invasive fungal infections. Following case report exemplifies more than two fungi can together cause pneumonia as confirmed by similar findings in 3 respiratory samples from the dengue shock syndrome patient. High clinical suspicion and prompt initiation of aggressive, high-dose

BACKGROUND: Rhino-maxillary mucormycosis (RMM) is an aggressive, life-threatening fungal infection associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. While early diagnosis is universally advocated, robust quantitative evidence delineating how defined diagnostic delays influence objective clinical outcomes remains scarce. This study aimed to quantify the relationship between diagnostic timing and treatment outcomes in RMM and to develop a protocol-driven multidisciplinary algorithm to standardize management.
METHODS: This retrospective case series analyzed patients diagnosed and treated for

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) demonstrates expanding applications in infectious diseases through its multimodal mechanisms. As an adjunctive treatment, HBOT directly exerts antimicrobial effects through oxygen toxicity and reactive oxygen species generation, while indirectly enhances host immunity by improving neutrophil function and promoting tissue repair. Clinical evidence supports its adjunctive use in complex infections including diabetic foot wounds, necrotizing soft tissue infections, COVID-19, and mucormycosis, particularly in hypoxic wounds where conventional therapies show limited

UNLABELLED: Invasive mold diseases (IMDs) such as mucormycosis and aspergillosis carry high mortality despite optimal antifungal therapy. Adjunctive immunomodulation, including anti-PD-1 antibodies and interferon-γ, may help restore antifungal immunity in severely ill patients. We implemented multidisciplinary team meetings in France to assess and validate the use of adjunctive anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibodies and interferon-γ in combination with antifungal therapy for patients with life-threatening IMDs. Here, we report the characteristics and outcomes of the treated patients. Twelve cases wer

Subcutaneous zygomycosis, also known as basidiobolomycosis, is a rare, chronic fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompetent individuals in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease often presents as firm, painless, indurated subcutaneous swellings that may mimic malignancy, chronic bacterial infections, tuberculosis, or other deep fungal infections, leading to frequent misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgical interventions. We report the case of a 53-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with gradually enlarging, painless swellings over the right thigh and groin, accompani

BACKGROUND: Concurrent opportunistic infections are rare but can lead to life-threatening complications in patients with hematologic disorders. Immunosuppression, particularly severe neutropenia, significantly increases the risk of invasive fungal and bacterial infections. We report a 34-year-old female with chronic hepatitis B initially presented with pancytopenia. Subsequent bone marrow evaluation revealed aplastic anemia, and she subsequently received immunosuppressive therapy. During hospitalization, she developed multiple infectious episodes, including fever, pulmonary nodular lesions, an

BACKGROUND: Lung transplant recipients (LTRs) are susceptible to opportunistic infections, including invasive nocardiosis (IN) and invasive mucormycosis (IM). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid offers rapid pathogen detection, but its clinical utility in LTRs is understudied.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center, retrospective cohort study of adult LTRs who underwent BAL PCR testing for Nocardia spp. or Mucorales spp. (January 2020-December 2024); samples from both surveillance and "for-cause" bronchoscopies were included. The primary outcome was de

Conidiobolus sp. causes conidiobolomycosis, an emerging invasive fungal disease that affects humans and animals, mainly in tropical regions. In sheep, the disease has a major economic impact. We report an outbreak of conidiobolomycosis on a sheep farm in the Brazilian Amazon, as well as give a brief review of the subject. Veterinary care was requested on a rural property on which 3 of 35 sheep had developed prostration, facial edema, and exophthalmos. Two of the sick animals died, and a third was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Acre (Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil).

Species belonging to the genus Apophysomyces are thermotolerant filamentous fungi within the order Mucorales and family Mucoraceae . These organisms have increasingly been recognized as clinically significant pathogens due to their ability to cause severe, often fatal invasive infections. While Apophysomyces species classically cause post-traumatic necrotizing soft-tissue infections in immunocompetent individuals, central nervous system involvement is rare and typically reported in immunocompromised hosts. This case series uniquely juxtaposes two distinct clinical presentations of Apophysomyce
