External hydrocephalus is a rare condition characterized by abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulation in the subarachnoid space, often associated with developmental anomalies. Lobar holoprosencephaly, a milder form of holoprosencephaly, can manifest with hydrocephalus due to its impact on brain development and CSF dynamics. This case report describes a neonate with congenital external hydrocephalus secondary to lobar holoprosencephaly, highlighting the diagnostic imaging findings and management approach. A neonate presented with progressive macrocephaly, irritability, altered sensorium,

RATIONALE: Laparotomy and peritoneal drainage are two options for managing preterm very low birth weight infants with surgical necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) or spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP). Peritoneal drainage has the theoretical benefit of avoiding surgery, whereas laparotomy enables the surgeon to directly visualise the intestines and undertake appropriate interventions. There is debate as to which method is superior. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2011.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of peritoneal drainage compared to laparotomy as t

INTRODUCTION: Although peritoneal dialysis (PD) is preferred over hemodialysis in most children, there are limited data on neonates.
METHODS: Single-institution retrospective chart review on all neonates (≤4 wk old) with PD catheter placement (January 1, 2015 - December 31, 2023). Patients with primary congenital heart disease were excluded. Demographic and clinical data were collected. Median and interquartile ranges presented for nonparametric data.
RESULTS: The 21 patients were mostly male (81%) with median gestational age of 36 (35-38) wk and birth weight of 2.91 (2.68-3.33) kg. PD cathe

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing for surgical intervention in the management of tetralogy remains a subject of ongoing debate. This investigation involved a retrospective analysis of neonatal patients who had received continuous treatment for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) at our centre. The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility and necessity of treating TOF in the neonatal period.
METHODS: A retrospective analytical investigation was undertaken of 33 cases of neonates who underwent consecutive one-stage surgical repair for TOF at the Beijing Anzhen Hospital from June 2022 to Decemb

BACKGROUND: With advanced technology, survival of neonates with congenital kidney failure (CKF) requiring continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) has improved. Nutrition is essential but difficult to attain as CKRT removes proteins and micronutrients, and many patients have multiple co-morbidities. Scant data exist to guide clinicians on appropriate energy requirements for growth.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of neonates with CKF admitted to Children's of Alabama between 2016 and 2022 who required KRT within 10 days. We evaluated risk factors and growth in the 18/24 (75%)

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a clinical condition characterized by the presence of renal cysts and kidney enlargement. When it presents during the neonatal period, it can lead to progressive renal damage and eventually result in end-stage renal failure. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) can be particularly challenging in the neonatal intensive care unit due to the infant's thin abdominal wall and the often unsuitable size and shape of available catheters. As a result, the use of such catheters in infants is associated with high mortality and significant complications, including leakage, peritonit

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill neonates is usually of pre-renal origin and, often, pharmacological treatment is not sufficient for resolution, requiring kidney replacement therapy (KRT). Due to the small body size and the unavailability of adequate devices for these patients, peritoneal dialysis (PD) appears to be the most easily achievable procedure. However, guidelines for PD management are lacking in this population. Objective: We aimed to report a single-center experience with preterm infants who underwent PD, describing the technical issues and the outcomes, and t

BACKGROUND: Sudan's pediatric cardiac surgery services improved over the past decade, especially after the 2022 national free program. However, conflict in April 2023 halted all services. There is a scarcity of scholarly literature concerning pediatric cardiac surgery in low-income African countries such as Sudan. This study documents the achievements made before the conflict.
METHODS: This was a prospective observational study conducted at the Sudan Heart Center. Data were collected from hospital medical records between January and December 2022. All patients who underwent surgical intervent

Background and Objectives: Vernix caseosa peritonitis (VCP) is rare. Nonspecific symptoms of acute abdomen during early puerperium make preoperative diagnosis of VCP challenging. We aimed to identify risk factors, early diagnosis and treatment options, and the association between the timing and severity of VCP diagnosis and maternal outcomes. Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, PubMed Central, and Google Scholar. Articles were analyzed according to the PRISMA guidelines. The search items included: 'vernix caseosa peritonitis, 'vernix caseosa granuloma, 'maternal meconium peritonitis', '

Acute kidney injury (AKI) and acute lung injury (ALI) are common in critically ill neonates, children, and those with severe cardiac disease. Although kidney and lung dysfunction can occur independently, molecular signaling and organ crosstalk significantly influence the function of each organ. Additionally, there is a link between AKI and fluid balance disorders. A bidirectional and synergistic relationship exists between AKI and fluid imbalance, with fluid management potentially becoming compromised before or after AKI. Fluid accumulation can further worsen ALI by impairing gas exchange. Org

This study aimed to develop a standardized ultrasound (US) protocol using selected thoracic and abdominal acoustic windows, to assess its feasibility and applicability in healthy foals, and to evaluate its usefulness for detecting common thoracic and abdominal conditions in sick foals. The Focused US (FUS) protocol included 12 thoraco-abdominal windows (4 right-side, 3 ventral, 5 left-side) using a curved-array probe. It was applied to cohorts of healthy (n = 17) and sick (n = 23) foals by a veterinary clinician with limited US experience. The FUS showed good feasibility and applicability, wit

Background: An imbalance in the vaginal microbiota, often characterized by reduced lactobacilli, paves the way forth for opportunistic bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract. The presence of aerobic bacteria in the genital tract during pregnancy can have negative outcomes on the pregnancy. Peripartum infections, when not adequately managed, can significantly impact maternal and neonatal health. Antimicrobial resistance poses an escalating global health threat, with newborns particularly vulnerable. Methods: This study constitutes a retrospective observational analysis, encompassing all micro

INTRODUCTION: Although rare, incontinent diversions still has a place in the management of challenging conditions. Ureterocutaneostomy (in refluxing or non-refluxing moieties) is a viable option for relief of obstruction. It can be performed open or laaproscopically. Here we report our laparoscopic technique of extraperitoneal cutaneous ureterostomy with the help of transperitoneal laparoscopy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients who underwent laparoscopic ureterocutaneostomy between 2020 and 2024 are enrolled in the study and our hybrid technique is described.
RESULTS: Seven patients are enr

Intraventricular macrophages (IVMs) reside in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and are considered a border-associated macrophage (BAM) population in the brain. Although they represent the first line of defense against intraventricular challenges, their developmental roles and responses to injury are poorly understood. This knowledge is relevant for conditions including neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), where blood extravasates into brain ventricles, leading to life-long negative sequelae including cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. Here, we show that IVMs are first responders to blood in dev

Meconium ileus (MI) is the result of the accumulation of thick, dry, inspissated meconium that creates a bowel blockage, most commonly in the terminal ileum. These pockets of meconium prevent passage of stool beyond the point of obstruction, which leads to distention of the proximal bowel, bowel wall thickening, and distal microcolon. Occurring most commonly (90%) in conjunction with cystic fibrosis (CF), the occurrence of MI without CF is rare. The literature describes the incidence of MI associated with CF occurring in as many as 24.9% of those who have a pair (homozygous) of the most common
