INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Actinomycosis of the foot is a rare, chronic, granulomatous infectious ailment affecting the skin, dermis, and subcutaneous tissues. It is caused by a fungal or actinomycotic agent, resulting in a pseudotumoral appearance. This pathology typically progresses slowly, leading to delayed diagnosis. The primary objective of this report is to emphasize the rarity and clinical significance of this highly uncommon medical condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 45-year-old woman with a mass on the sole of her right foot. The condition was treated through e

Canine eumycetoma is a rare granulomatous disease caused by dematiaceous fungi. A 2-year-old Great Dane dog had a subcutaneous mass in the right thigh that was surgically removed. Grossly, numerous black-grains were visible. Histologically subcutaneous pyogranulomas were centered on myriads of pigmented fungal elements. Madurella pseudomycetomatis was molecularly characterized.

Subcutaneous fungal infections, which typically result from traumatic introduction (implantation) of fungal elements into the skin or underlying tissues, can present as a range of different clinical entities including phaeohyphomycosis, chromoblastomycosis, subcutaneous nodules or masses, and genuine eumycetoma. Here, we mined our laboratory information management system for such infections in humans and domestic animals for the period 2016-2022, including (i) fungal isolates referred for identification and/or susceptibility testing; (ii) infections diagnosed at our laboratory using panfungal

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are communicable diseases that are uncommon in developed countries but epidemic in developing countries of the tropical and subtropical regions around the world. One of the important contributions expected of pharmaceutical companies is the development and provision of drugs effective against NTDs. Firstly, Eisai has distributed at price zero to endemic countries worldwide diethylcarbamazine (DEC) tablets for patients suffering with lymphatic filariasis (LF). Eisai's efforts toward improving global health have resulted in a rich portfolio of assets addressing

Mycetoma describes a heterogeneous group of cutaneous and subcutaneous infections caused by either fungi (eumycetomas) or bacteria (actinomycetomas). It is characterized by a triad of clinical symptoms: painless subcutaneous tumor-like swelling, multiple sinuses and fistulas, and discharged grains in pus. This predominantly affects the feet in more than 70% of patients. It is endemic in the "mycetoma belt" regions, including Africa, South America, and South Asia. Autochthonous mycetoma is rare in the United States of America (USA). We recently reported a Latin American immigrant with eumycetom

Eumycetoma is a chronic infection due to filamentous fungi. Herein, we report a case of eumycetoma presenting as a subcutaneous encapsulated lesion on the right leg with no previous traumatic implantation. From microscopic morphological characteristics and molecular analysis, the pathogenic fungal species were identified as Biatriospora mackinnonii. Surgical excision of the entire lesion was performed to reduce the fungal load and improve antifungal therapy response.

A Tunisian patient with painless swelling and discharging sinuses of the right foot was diagnosed with Eumycetoma after 1 year of evolution. Mycetoma is a neglected disease relatively rare in our country. An early and accurate diagnosis, based on histopathological and microbiological examinations, limits functional and esthetical damage.

A captive-kept adult male tiger presented with a large cutaneous and subcutaneous mass on the thigh with a fistula. During sedation, multiple nodules were detected and samples for a histopathological exam were collected. Histologically, granulomatous panniculitis and dermatitis were seen around dense aggregates of pigmented fungal hyphae, and a diagnosis of phaeohyphomycosis was made; considering the clinical features, it was classified as a eumycotic mycetoma. This is a rarely reported subcutaneous fungal infection in humans and animals, caused by dematiaceous fungi. Clinically, it is charact

A black-grain eumycetoma due to Diaporthe uekerae in a kidney transplant recipient is presented. The isolate was identified by using the newly available NCBI's curated database (rRNA_typestrains/ITS_RefSeq_Fungi) and the NCBI's GenBank + EMBL + DDBI + PDB + RefSeq database. The isolate's antifungal susceptibility was evaluated. The studied isolate showed low MIC values to the eight tested antifungals. Using this updated database, the identities of previous agents of Diaporthe spp. infections were revised.

Eumycetomas of craniocerebral are rare, and we report an extraordinary case of maduramycosis involving brain and skull bone in a middle-aged male who presented with complaints of headache, behavioral abnormalities, and memory disturbances for 3 months. Imaging showed a frontal lesion. It was mistaken for a tumor clinically and radiologically. Craniocerebral eumycetoma usually presents as a mass on the scalp with sinuses. Our case presented as a brain tumor without a soft tissue mass or discharging sinuses. It is essential to keep in mind this mode of presentation, and only a biopsy will aid in

Medicopsis romeroi phaeohyphomycosis is increasingly reported in immunocompromised patients living in or originating from tropical and subtropical areas. We report a case of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by M. romeroi in a 56-year-old Malian woman residing in France for 20 years. She developed a small nodule on her dominant hand's ring finger 15 months after starting immunosuppressive medications for paraneoplastic dermatomyositis. A first surgical debridement was followed by a local recurrence. Despite a second surgical excision combined with posaconazole treatment, the infection recu

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Subcutaneous infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum present as chronic eumycetomatous manifestations in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals. Serious adverse effects/toxicities from the long-term use of antifungal drugs and antifungal resistance have been reported in patients with S. apiospermum infections. The present study aimed to determine the anti-S. apiospermum activities of fungal quorum sensing molecule known as tryptophol (TOH) and to develop a TOH-containing emulgel for treating S. apiospermum eumycetoma.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Anti-S

INTRODUCTION: Larsen syndrome (LS) is a rare genetic disorder affecting mainly the connective tissues. It is characterized by characteristic facial anomalies, cervical kyphosis, cardiorespiratory disorders, and multiple joint dislocations. We present a case of a 15-year-old male with unstable neuropathic knee joint instability in a known case of LS. The paucity of literature on the management of this rare condition puts an orthopedician in dilemma regarding the optimal treatment.

Mycetoma, well known as "Madura foot," is a long-standing granulomatous infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Causative organisms are filamentous fungi (eumycetes) and bacteria (actinomycetes). It characteristically presents with firm woody swelling, discharging sinuses with grains (containing the causative organism). Diagnosis in suspected cases can be made by microbiological evaluation, histopathological, cytological and radio imaging techniques. To differentiate between eumycetoma and actinomycetes histopathology is an accurate diagnostic modality as seen in the present case. We re

This is a case report of a 42-year-old woman who presented to a clinic with a history of progressive left foot and ankle swelling. She had a suspected history of myectoma, but had never been officially diagnosed despite repeated cultures and debridements over the course of decades. The inciting event occurred approximately 30 years prior in her home country of Belize. Her wound culture revealed Scedosporium apiospermum as the causative agent. Treatment included surgical debridement and oral antifungal therapy. This case represents an interesting adjunct to the differential diagnosis for milita

Eumycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous neglected tropical disease that can be caused by more than 40 different fungal causative agents. The most common causative agents produce black grains and belong to the fungal orders Sordariales and Pleosporales. The current antifungal agents used to treat eumycetoma are itraconazole or terbinafine, however, their cure rates are low. To find novel drugs for eumycetoma, we screened 400 diverse drug-like molecules from the Pandemic Response Box against common eumycetoma causative agents as part of the Open Source Mycetoma initiative (MycetOS). 26 compounds we

Mycetoma is a tropical disease caused by several fungi and bacteria present in the soil. Fungal mycetoma and eumycetoma are especially challenging to treat; therefore, prevention, early diagnosis, and early treatment are important, but it is also necessary to understand the geographic distribution of these pathogenic fungi. In this study, we used DNA metabarcoding methodology to identify fungal species from soil samples. Soil sampling was implemented at seven villages in an endemic area of Sennar State in Sudan in 2019, and ten sampling sites were selected in each village according to land-use

Background Mycetoma is widespread in Yemen; however, there are only a few documented reports on the entity from this geographical area. Methods A prospective study of 184 cases of mycetoma (male 145 and female 39) from different regions of north-western Yemen was conducted between July 2000 and May 2014. Clinical profile was recorded in a standardized protocol. The diagnosis was based on clinical features, X-ray studies, examination of grains, and histopathology. Results Eumycetoma was diagnosed in 129, caused by Madurella mycetomatis in 124, Leptosphaeria senegalensis in one and pale grain fu
