Thalamic Volume Reduction in Cerebral Visual Impairment: Relationship to Visual Dysfunction.

The thalamus is critical for the relay and modulation of visual information. As such, injury to the developing thalamus may result in cerebral visual impairment (CVI). This study investigated quantitative volume reductions of the thalamus in cerebral visual impairment compared to controls and probed the association between thalamic volume and the severity of cerebral visual impairment-related visual dysfunctions. Thalamic volumes were quantified using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 23 participants with cerebral visual impairment and 42 controls. Nineteen participants wi

A human iPSC-Derived myelination model for investigating fetal brain injuries.

Cerebral white matter injuries, such as periventricular leukomalacia, are major contributors to neurodevelopmental impairments in preterm infants. Despite the clinical significance of these conditions, human-relevant models for studying fetal brain development and injury mechanisms remain limited. This study introduces a human iPSC-derived myelination model developed using a microfluidic device. The platform combines spinal cord-patterned neuronal and oligodendrocyte spheroids to recapitulate axon-glia interactions and myelination processes in vitro. The model successfully achieved axonal fasc

Absence of association between early antibiotic exposure and short-term adverse outcomes in very preterm infants: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics save lives but also carry significant risks, including increased antimicrobial resistance, higher healthcare costs, and disruption of the microbiome. However, the association between antibiotic exposure and short-term adverse outcomes remains uncertain. Our study aimed to evaluate whether early unnecessary antibiotic exposure in the first 7 days of life of very preterm infants is linked to short-term adverse outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective study included infants born below 32 weeks of gestation and hospitalized at the University Hospital of Lausanne between Janua

Development of a New Animal Model for Non-Cystic Periventricular Leukomalacia.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is a major cause of cerebral palsy in preterm neonates. Though many interventions are being explored as therapeutic options in PVL, all these therapies are still in preclinical phase. This emphasizes the need for the development of robust animal models for PVL. We aimed to develop a new animal (rat) model for PVL using natural pattern of perinatal insults as in humans. The animal model was developed using a combination of three insults: prenatal inflammation, prenatal near total ischemia and postnatal recurrent hypoxia. Pathological and immunohistochemical an

Efficacy of probiotic supplementation in preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe condition in preterm infants, involving intestinal inflammation and bacterial invasion, leading to high morbidity and mortality. Probiotics may reduce NEC by promoting beneficial gut bacteria, but the role of Bifidobacterium bifidum G001 (BBG001) is not well understood. This meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of BBG001 versus placebo in preventing NEC, late-onset sepsis, and all-cause mortality in preterm infants. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducte

Prolonged Parenteral Nutrition Increases the Risk of Comorbidities in Very-Low-Birth-Weight Infants: A Prospective National Cohort Study in South Korea.

Background/Objectives: There has been an increase in the incidence of comorbidities among very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWIs), including periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Parenteral nutrition is essential for very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWIs) who are born with a birth weight of less than 1500 g, but a longer duration of parenteral nutrition is known to have a risk of comorbidity, such as ROP. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the duration of parenteral nutrition and the comorbidities of the

The predictive value of maternal and neonatal inflammatory biomarkers for necrotizing enterocolitis.

UNLABELLED: More than half of preterm births are triggered by inflammatory processes at the foeto-maternal interface. These inflammatory processes can persist after birth due to the unique vulnerabilities of preterm infants, often resulting in sustained inflammation with a role in complications such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), and periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of maternal inflammatory status, assessed through biomarkers of inflammation (CRP, chorioamnion

Near-infrared spectroscopy during respiratory support at birth: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: During perinatal transition, compromised cerebral oxygenation may contribute to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Near-infrared spectroscopy measures cerebral regional tissue oxygen saturations (crSO2) and may guide delivery room respiratory management. This review evaluated whether crSO2 monitoring in addition to routine assessment (clinical assessment, pulse oximetry +/- ECG) compared with routine assessment alone improves neonatal outcomes. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis based on Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL searches (16 February and 5 November 2024).
