Gestational age at birth and the risk of disability pension in early adulthood: a whole-population register study of people born in Finland in 1987-90.

BACKGROUND: Preterm (<37 weeks), early-term (37-38 weeks), or post-term (42 weeks) birth may elevate the risk of mental, neurodevelopmental, and cardiopulmonary disease in adulthood, potentially impacting work capacity. METHODS: We examined the association between gestational age and early disability pension (DP) among 228 572 Finnish individuals born between 1 January 1987 and 30 September 1990. We identified the first DP decision from ages 16 to ∼32 years (2003-20) by using linked birth and DP records, including timing and diagnosis. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval

Parent Mental Health From Preterm Birth Through the NICU Stay.

OBJECTIVES: Preterm birth and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission are not only extremely stressful for the infant itself but can also impact parental mental health. This Dutch national prospective cohort study aimed to describe the trajectory of parental mental health following preterm birth (<29 weeks of gestation) and identify contributing factors for mothers and fathers separately. METHODS: As part of the "Happiness for the Improvement of Premature and Parental Outcome" study, parents completed questionnaires on posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms at 3 time points up to

Early Prediction of Outcome Using Lactate Dehydrogenase and Amplitude-Integrated EEG in Transported Newborn Infants with Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathy.

AIM: To investigate whether early lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) improve the prediction of outcome in outborn infants transported for therapeutic hypothermia. METHOD: Secondary analysis of a randomised controlled trial (2016-2019) including 113 asphyxiated newborn infants randomised to transport with a phase-change material mattress or standard care. The analysis included 81 infants with available aEEG, of whom 50 had LDH measured on admission. Outcome at 18 months was categorised as good, defined as normal development or mild delay, or poor

Neonatal outcomes related to parental holding during therapeutic hypothermia for neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review will evaluate neonatal outcomes related to parental holding during therapeutic hypothermia for treatment of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy in neonates. INTRODUCTION: Neonates diagnosed with or at risk for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, an acquired brain injury at birth, receive therapeutic hypothermia as a neuroprotective intervention. However, despite a lack of evidence on associated harm, parents are often restricted from holding the newborn until the therapeutic hypothermia treatment is completed. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The review will include all experimental and

Advances in therapeutic hybrid neuromodulation for Parkinson's disease.

AIMS: Recent studies have demonstrated sex-related differences in secondary prevention pharmacotherapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction, although guidelines recommend the same preventive approach in both women and men. This study builds upon previous research by examining temporal trends in prescribing patterns of secondary prevention medications using contemporary, long-term data from Switzerland, with particular focus on sex-related disparities. METHODS: Acute myocardial infarction patients enrolled in the AMIS (Acute Myocardial Infarction in Switzerland) Plus project between 20

Impact of clomipramine postnatal exposure on sexual behavior and reproductive organs in female rats: role of sexual experience.

Depression is a common psychiatric disorder during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Consequently, antidepressant treatment is primordial for the safety of the mother and the neonate. Clomipramine (CMI) is a tricyclic antidepressant that has been prescribed even when the evidence suggests potential adverse effects on the neurodevelopment of the offspring, considering that antidepressant drugs can be transferred through breast milk. Nevertheless, in some cases, when the benefits outweigh the risks, it is used to treat severe depression in pregnant women. In rodents, postnatal administration o

Depression and hippocampal subfield volume in older adults.

Depression is associated with a higher risk for developing Alzheimer's Disease (AD) [1], but the mechanisms that underlie the complex relationship between depression and AD remain largely elusive. The hippocampus is a region of the brain that is commonly affected by both AD and depression and serves as a focal point for our study. We aim to understand the relationship of 1) depression and antidepressant medications to hippocampal subfield volume during normal aging, and 2) whether AD risk, as measured by amyloid and tau pathology and APOE4 status, impacts these relationships. We studied 2009 e

Effect of synbiotic supplementation and psychobiotic diet on prenatal and postnatal depression and anxiety in women with gestational diabetes: a three-arm randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most prevalent metabolic disorders during pregnancy and may lead to various short-term and long-term complications for both the mother and the fetus. It is also associated with psychological disorders, such as anxiety and depression, the prevalence of which is reported to be two to four times higher than that among healthy pregnant women. Psychobiotics may improve cognitive and emotional function through modulation of the gut-brain axis. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the prophylactic effects of synbiotic supplementa

Perinatal HPA axis regulation and offspring neuropsychiatric development: mechanisms, developmental trajectories, and clinical implications.

Maternal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation forms part of the maternal-placental-foetal system through which prenatal environments may influence offspring developmental trajectories. During pregnancy, cortisol supports placental function and foetal maturation; however, its developmental significance depends on exposure timing, magnitude, and duration, placental glucocorticoid regulation, and foetal susceptibility. This narrative review synthesises evidence regarding maternal psychological distress, endogenous glucocorticoid regulation, placental glucocorticoid pathways, anten

Exploring Diagnostic Classification Prevalence in German and Dutch Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: An International Cross-Sectional Comparative Study.

Classification systems like the DSM-5 and ICD-10 facilitate international comparative research on mental disorders. However, few studies have compared classification distributions in child and adolescent psychiatric settings across countries. This study explored similarities and differences in classification prevalence between German and Dutch children and adolescents referred to psychiatric facilities. Data were retrospectively collected from clinical samples of inpatients and outpatients who underwent diagnostic assessments in Germany (n = 7,089) and the Netherlands (n = 2,574), aged 0-18 ye

Comparative Analysis of Treatment With Folate Forms in Clinical Practice.

Folate compounds are crucial for DNA and RNA synthesis, homocysteine regulation, and epigenetic methylation. However, significant differences exist between 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) and folinic acid (CHO-THF) -and synthetic folic acid (sFA). Understanding their absorption, bioavailability, and clinical effects is essential, especially for women planning pregnancy, pregnant women, and patients with MTHFR or DHFR polymorphisms, autism spectrum disorders, or other folate-related conditions. A comparative analysis of clinical and biochemical studies was conducted to evaluate the efficacy,

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation Mediates Antidepressant Effects by Altering Right Brainstem and Right Entorhinal Cortex Activity in a Rodent Model Functional Dyspepsia.

OBJECTIVE: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been reported to ameliorate symptoms of both functional dyspepsia (FD) and depression/anxiety, while the central mechanism underlying taVNS effects on depression and anxiety in FD remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate taVNS-induced depression-like behavioral changes and cerebral activity alterations in a rodent model of FD. METHODS: Neonatal Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were gavaged with iodoacetamide (IA) to induce a FD model. taVNS was performed for 30 min once daily for 14 days consecutively. The open f

Hypoxia/reoxygenation cycles, reactive oxygen species and succinate: A mechanistic framework for apnea of prematurity?

We review clinical observations and experimental data to examine the pathophysiological mechanisms by which apnea of prematurity and intermittent hypoxemia destabilizes respiratory control and might lead to neurodevelopmental disorders. Clinically, both apnea and hypoxemia are characterized by marked heterogeneity in definitions, monitoring approaches, and temporal patterns, complicating comparisons across studies. Clinical evidence suggests that cumulative hypoxemic burden, rather than apnea duration alone, is a key determinant of respiratory and neurodevelopmental morbidity in preterm neonat

Moderating effects of maternal-infant interaction on the relationship between adverse neonatal exposures and the development of autistic behaviors at follow-up: A preterm birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm-birth infants have elevated risks of autistic behaviors compared to term-birth infants. While neonatal adverse exposures and the morbidity burden in the neonatal intensive care units are often used to forecast neurodevelopmental outcomes including autism, the extent to which post-discharge maternal psychosocial health and mother-infant interactions mitigate early autistic behaviors remains unclear. AIM: To examine whether the maternal psychosocial status and maternal-infant interaction at 6 months moderate the association between neonatal morbidity exposures and autistic b

Effectiveness of olanzapine for hyperemesis gravidarum in individuals without a psychiatric history: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is characterized by severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, and can markedly impair quality of life as well as cause maternal and fetal complications. Although a stepwise treatment strategy with antiemetics and nutritional support is commonly used, some cases remain refractory. Olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic, has shown potential benefit in HG, although most reports involve patients with psychiatric comorbidities. We describe a patient with persistent HG in late gestation without psychiatric history, in whom adjunctive olanzapine was temporall

[Prognosis of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: diagnostic methods and treatment].

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy results from perinatal asphyxia and manifests through severe metabolic acidosis or neonatal depression requiring resuscitation. Since this remains a significant cause of mortality and neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy and epilepsy, a multimodal evaluation integrating clinical, biochemical, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging parameters is required to determine the prognosis. In terms of clinical assessment, various scales can be applied, these are especially helpful in predicting the risk of adverse outcomes. The gold standard treatment for mo

Vitamin D as a Lifespan Neuroimmune Signal in Psychiatry: From Developmental Risk to Precision Nutrition.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D is a nutrient-related secosteroid system with endocrine, paracrine, immunological, and neurodevelopmental actions relevant to nutritional psychiatry. Psychiatric research has often treated vitamin D either as a cross-sectional correlate of depression or as a non-specific supplement expected to act across heterogeneous diagnostic categories. This narrative review aimed to develop a more discriminating framework in which vitamin D is considered a lifespan neuroimmune and immunometabolic signal whose psychiatric relevance depends on developmental timing, biologica

Stroke-Related Animal Models: Methodologies, Applications, and Translational Perspectives.

Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Despite hundreds of neuroprotective agents showing promise in preclinical studies, nearly all have failed in clinical trials, largely due to inconsistencies between animal models and the human condition. This review provides a comprehensive overview of experimental stroke models, encompassing ischemic stroke (middle cerebral artery occlusion, photothrombosis, thromboembolic models, endothelin-1-induced vasoconstriction, global ischemia), hemorrhagic stroke (intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, epidural hematoma), c
